Grey's Anatomy: Episode Recap: "Here Comes the Flood" Season 5, Episode 2

This week Meredith got her first dose of what life will be like living under the same roof with Derek and the change just might cost her some friends. Meanwhile, the Chief gets serious about laying down a few new rules at the hospital, Erica gets testy over her new relationship with Callie and George struggles to find the time (and a place) to take his exam.

Wasting no time at all, Derek has already begun moving into Mer's place and he has some shocking news for her roommates, they've got to go! As Alex and Izzie process this new turn of events, Meredith finds herself stuck in the middle. Can she really kick her friends out for Derek? You can clearly see she doesn't want to, but in true Mer fashion she seeks out Cristina for her input. The only trouble is, now that Cristina is being the "supportive friend," she feels like she can't really speak her mind.

Back at Seattle Grace, the Chief held a meeting to let everyone know life as they know it is about to change. No more special favors for friends in the OR and no more getting emotionally involved with patients. True to his word, the Chief starts shaking things up by reassigning the docs to different cases to move them out of their comfort zone and to hopefully help them learn something new. Though as we saw this week, the Chief's new rules didn't exactly work as Meredith (in a rare moment) found herself becoming emotionally involved with one of Izzie's former patients.

Meanwhile, George spends the majority of his time first trying to find a place to take his exam (before all of his knowledge falls out of his head), then later catering to the Chief's every whim.

Enter the flood and chaos erupts! Okay, so the water wasn't that overwhelming (judging from the previews I thought patients would have been floating down the halls), but the plumbing break did cause a lot of damage. The Chief did his best to maintain order and keep all of his patients at Seattle Grace, but eventually he sided with Bailey and agreed that it was time to move the patients to safer grounds, via another hospital.

On a more romantic note, things seem to be progressing between Callie and Erica…the only problem is, Mark knows everything (much to Erica's chagrin). Callie manages to explain Mark is a good friend that she likes to be able to talk to and eventually Erica accepts the idea. So, why is it that Erica seems to dislike Mark so much? Perhaps she put it best when she told Callie, "I think I just hate him because he's seen you naked."

Speaking of Mark, I still think he and Lexie make the next ideal couple. How sweet (and rare) was it to hear Mark give Lexie props for remembering that obscure article that led to a successful diagnosis of their patient? He's so into her that it tugs at my heart every time Lexie ignores those little love signs from him and instead turns to chase after George. Sigh, someday these two will get together. Do you hear me Shonda?!?

In the end, a lot of loose ends get tied up in a pretty bow. Meredith stands her ground with Derek and tells him that Alex and Izzie are part of her family and they get to stay. Which is a good thing considering Cristina totally missed the point that Izzie wanted to be her roommate in that great new apartment and Alex had no other living arrangements in the works, other than shacking up in his car. Fortunately, Derek agrees that Alex and Izzie should both stay, with the caveat that the topic will come up again at some point in the future.

And in other good news, George finally gets to take his exam, with the Chief serving as proctor. We also got to see lots of longing and loving looks from Alex, aimed at Izzie.

I really liked this week's episode, but I was a little surprised to see how some things ended up playing out. Did anyone else out there think that Izzie and Cristina were actually going to rent an apartment together, thereby making it possible for Callie to stay in Burke's old place and invite Erica to move in with her? And just how long is it going to take for Lexie to realize that Mark adores her and that George's obliviousness to her could just be a sign that he's just not that into her?

As we ponder those thoughts, here are some of my favorite lines of the night:

Izzie: "Eat the muffin. Taste the muffin. Remember the muffin."
Meredith: "The hair is one of the many things that makes me happy."
Mark: "Were you just about to feel her up?"
Alex: "You must have something to live for, or even just the possibility of something…It's going to turn around."
