Episode Recap; We Have a Winner! | The Next Great American Band | 12/22/2007
Merry Christmas and happy holidays everybody! My Christmas gift to you is that you can now leave your house on a Friday night. Just kidding. Im looking forward to going out to eat with my wife again, but at the same time Im really going to miss this show. Admittedly the show was not progressing very well near the end, but it was still entertaining. I guess could talk about the cheesy Christmas medley featuring many of bands that got cut this season or I could talk about how the...

Guest Columnist Ashley Clark Sounds Off on His Next Great American Band Win | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 12/22/2007
When we made the finals of The Next Great American Band, I was in shock, because our goal was to make the top five. When we made the top four, I was like, "No way!" Then we made the top three and we were like, "It can't get any better than this." But to win... I just can't believe it! All I remember is my legs giving out when they said, "The Clark Brothers." All of the stress and the months away from home and the work just hit me at once and I fell down, you know? This was our first gig ...

Episode Recap: Top 3 Perform | The Next Great American Band | 12/15/2007
Were almost there friends! Next week is the finale and we now have three bands to choose from. I believe Dominic Bowden said that there were 3,000,000 votes last week. At least I think thats what he said. I had to go get some Q-tips and clean out my ears after that, as I swore he said that a show that averages less than 3 million viewers each week got more votes than people watching. I suppose its possible, but if hes telling the truth I will um I will buy the Dot...

Message for the Final Four: Change Is Good! | Sheila E.'s Next Great American Band Blog | 12/14/2007
Yesterday, I celebrated my birthday on set so that was a nice distraction. John and Dicko got me a cake and the audience started singing "Happy Birthday" to me before they even brought it out. It was overwhelming and kind of caught me off guard but it was very sweet! There are four bands left and each one had to learn three songs this week. They had to pick their favorite original song, a song picked by the producers, and a song picked by us judges.I chose four songs from four different artists...

Episode Recap: Top Four Perform | The Next Great American Band | 12/8/2007
So how many of you were like me tonight and turned on the TV at the normal time, only to see Wayne Brady instead of kids playing metal? OK, so I admit its a little sad that I work at TV Guide and I didnt know the timeslot moved, but I think its understandable that I was a little thrown off. I mean, sure, I suppose Fox thinks moving it to 9 pm near the end of the show will get more viewers but on a Friday? Actually, I expect the ratings to be lower. The later you move it...

Expect Some Queen-size Surprises! | Dicko's Next Great American Band Blog | 12/7/2007
A funny thing happened this week while we were taping the show. It was John [Rzeznik]'s birthday and everybody really made an effort to bring him presents. Everywhere he turned, it was cake and choruses of "Happy Birthday." Little did we know, he absolutely hates his birthday! He was trying to be as polite as he could be but he just wasn't handling it well. Fortunately, the bands had better luck than he did. This week, they're doing songs from Queen, a heavy rock act that morphed into this huge...

Episode Recap: Top 5 Perform | The Next Great American Band | 12/1/2007
A long, long week has taken its toll on me. The long weeks usually mean that I cant sit at work with my iPod on listening to my favorite (and some not so favorite) songs to get me through the day. So naturally I was looking forward to this weeks American Band to get my musical fix. Apart from his hits, I didnt know Rod Stewart before the 80s. I dont think I ever listened to him growing up, but Ive learned to enjoy a lot of his 80s hits through my collection...

I Don't Want Anyone to Go Home | Sheila E.'s Next Great American Band Blog | 11/30/2007
This week is Rod Stewart week. I love Rod Stewart! I think all of the bands did a really great job with his songs. I don't want to spoil the surprise but one of the bands performed "You're in My Heart" and we all just cried. It reminded me of my first time playing music with my dad so it made me really emotional. It's hard to do somebody else's song but that's what's so great about this show. Everyone did a really good job and I think they're doing that every week. Right now, it's getting to...

Episode Recap: Top 6 Perform | The Next Great American Band | 11/24/2007
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you all decided not to take a vacation this week simply because chatting with me is way too important to miss. No, no, no. Instead Im hoping that Sunday night youll pull it off the DVR and comment Monday morning. The first thing I must say is holy cleavage batman! Sheila E. got them out and up to the chin this week. It was even the first thing my wife noticed. Apart from Sheila, this was an odd week for me. For the first time this season, I...

How Did Franklin Bridge Fall Down? | Dicko's Next Great American Band Blog | 11/22/2007
I'm sitting here looking at the Sydney skyline waiting for my flight to America to judge The Next Great American Band [Fridays at 8 pm/ET, on Fox]. I fly back-and-forth every week because I'm also judging Australian Idol at the moment. I was putting on a brave face at first but, luckily, I'm never in America long enough to get jetlagged!Like Idol, this show deals with people's aspirations and dreams. I was really disappointed last week when Franklin Bridge was voted off. I don't know what...

Episode Recap: Top 7 Perform | The Next Great American Band | 11/17/2007
This is a week that I have a tough time relating to. Born in 76, I never really got the full impact of '60s music and never heard enough that excited me to make me want to go back and visit it. I know this sounds strange coming from a guy that found enough stuff exciting to own 4,000+ pieces of audio from the '80s, which is arguably the worst decade for music. (At least I know El DeBarge and Taco would be on my side of the debate). So a song like "Some Other Guy" is almost like listening...

Which Band Can Make a Statement? | Sheila E.'s Next Great American Band Blog | 11/16/2007
I've been the only female on most of the occasions in my life so it's not new to me. But I really have a blast with John and Dicko judging The Next Great American Band. A lot of times, the guys will make fun of me. They'll say, You dress so well on and off stage. I don't even care about combing my hair! But I think it's really important how you present yourself. Every week, the contestants are getting better. Honestly, it can make or break a band. They're conscious of how they look...

Episode Recap: 10 Cut to Eight | The Next Great American Band | 11/10/2007
Down to one hour this week, we lose the original performance from these bands, which of course brings the show closer to home and follows the proven cover-song format. I have to admit, hearing only covers changed my thoughts of some of these acts. And hearing right up front that one of the artists first CD purchase was Billy Joels River of Dreams also changed my thoughts that I might still actually be young. His first album was River of Dreams? Wow. My second album was Billys...

Episode Recap: "12 Cut To 10 &Top 10 Perform" | The Next Great American Band | 11/3/2007
Hey now rockers! It's Elton John and Bernie "Poppin" (whoops, I mean Taupin) week on The Search For the Next Great American Band. Elton is a bit more my speed than Dylan so this week excited me more than last. Whether you like Elton John's songs or not, you have to admit that the guy can write a heck of a pop tune. Obviously Bernie's no slouch either. The combo works so great together. As usual, before we get into the bands, let's talk atmosphere a minute. I love this elimination format. I...

Episode Recap: "Top 12 Perform" | The Next Great American Band | 10/27/2007
Wow, how much did this improve from last week? I have to admit that my hopes were not high after that mediocre debut, but now that the bands are inside and I saw the format, I was quite impressed. The set looks quite sharp, Dominic Bowden is actually a pretty decent host and Sheila E. looked mighty different than she did last week. But what impressed me the most was the format. The bands get to play one song with a theme and then one original. The original performances are whats going to...

Episode Recap: "Auditions" | The Next Great American Band | 10/20/2007
I have to tell you right up front that Ive been totally stoked for this show for months now. If you know nothing about me or my blogs, Ill simply tell you that Im a music geek. At any given point you can hear Culture Club, Slayer, Tim McGraw and yes, Sheila E. and the Goo Goo Dolls on my iPod. My favorite artist is Prince and I think Nickelback is the anti-Christ. That should give you a good enough look into why this show is my cup of tea. So without Rock Star to fall back on,...

Mad Men Rocks; Nashville Doesn't | Roush Dispatch | 9/14/2007
Favorite line on any show I've seen all week: "Peggy, this isn't China. There's no money in virginity." That's Joan talking, the sexiest secretary in all of '60s New York advertising, once again stealing a scene in AMC's dazzling Mad Men with aplomb. Christina Hendricks, I salute you.It was another intensely enjoyable episode this week, which also grew my estimation for the performance of January Jones (what a name) as Don Drapers quietly simmering, drop-dead-gorgeous Grace Kelly...

Inside the Emmys: All the Gossip from the Creative Arts Bash! | TV Guide Interviews & Features | 9/11/2007
Kathy Griffin may have referred to them as the Schmemmys, but this year's Creative Arts Emmys proved that even Life on the D List is worth an A-list award. And so is, apparently, wrapping your "D--k in a Box." At the significantly more relaxed event than next week's extravaganza, the red carpet became a place for friends to catch up and proud fathers and mothers to snap photos of their children being interviewed. Ugly Betty's Judith Light and Grey's Anatomy's Kate Burton, both up for a ...

The battle begins with a two-hour episode on Oct. 19 (and will air every Friday thereafter). Brooke Band, get your audition song ready, 'cause they're finally ready for you! Fox Keeps Things Stable and Welcomes Back Kelsey | First Look: Hottest Fall TV | 5/18/2007
Past experience has shown that it's wise to write down the new Fox schedule in pencil. There's always a change or two (or three) by the time the fall rolls around. But stability was the message for the 2007-08 season: Prison Break, 24, House, Bones, American Idol, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and the Sunday animation block will all return in their same time periods next season. Sure, Fox always falters when the season begins, but the network is about to finish No. 1 in viewers aged 18-49...
