Jeers to Eric McCormack for his laughable performance in The Andromeda Strain. The Emmy-winner was clearly looking for a change of pace after playing straight-laced Will Truman for eight seasons on Will & Grace, but his role as drug-addicted, unshaven TV muckraker Jack Nash in A&E's overheated adaptation of Michael Crichton's viral thriller is far from intoxicating. It doesn't help that McCormack seems stuck in sitcom rhythms with his too-glib line readings. We all had a great deal of fun, and lots of readers chimed in with their own examples of big-name celebs they've seen "in smaller roles, during leaner times".The way to play is very simple: Think of hot "new" stars that you see in any current TV show, and try to think of where you've spotted them on DVDs of older programs. HBO has greenlit a stack of new series, including several that center on women, as well as pilots for new series from David Milch and Darren Star.The roster of female-dominated shows starts with The Ladies' No. 1 Detective Agency, a Botswana-based story adapted from Alexander McCall Smith's book series. According to Variety, filmmakers Anthony Minghella and Richard Curtis are on for the project, which stars chanteuse/actress Jill Scott as Precious Ramostwe. Will & Grace alumna Jhoni Marchinko, meanwhile, heads up the net's new comedy, Driving Around with Joni, the Reporter says. The series follows a 40-year-old widow who drives around Los Angeles all day with her French bulldog, seeking meaning in the wake of her husband's death.Along with the dramedy duo, HBO's also greenlit a pilot order for Last of the Ninth, a "gritty cop drama" from David Milch. Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick are joining the post-strike rush of pilot orders with their greenlit comedy for ABC.The as-yet-unnamed show (which was written on spec prior to the strike), features two best friends and biz partners — one straight, one gay — who have to navigate their relationship when they each find romantic partners at the same time. The comedy's likely inspired in part by the writers' real friendship and longtime working relationship. In addition to Will & Grace, the two have shared credits on Four Kings and Good Morning Miami, among others.Although the pair also produced a pilot for CBS last year, the new one is unrelated, although thematically similar. — Anna Dimond
