Snappy hit about a straight woman and a gay man who are best friends. She's a decorator with a snippy, self-absorbed assistant; he's a lawyer with a flamboyant buddy who has trouble holding a job. The scripts are laced with pop-culture references and in-jokes, but what's best about this sitcom is the cast chemistry. What doesn't always work so well is the too-frequent big-name guests, who have included Michael Douglas, Cher, Madonna and Matt Damon.

Jeers: What a Strain! | Cheers & Jeers | 5/27/2008
Jeers to Eric McCormack for his laughable performance in The Andromeda Strain. The Emmy-winner was clearly looking for a change of pace after playing straight-laced Will Truman for eight seasons on Will & Grace, but his role as drug-addicted, unshaven TV muckraker Jack Nash in A&E's overheated adaptation of Michael Crichton's viral thriller is far from intoxicating. It doesn't help that McCormack seems stuck in sitcom rhythms with his too-glib line readings. Even Geraldo isn't this...

Today's Stars...Yesterday! Who Have You Spotted? | DVD News | 5/23/2008
With the long Memorial Day holiday this weekend, let's have some fun and play a game! We've actually played this game before, last October. I had a different blog back then, called "DVD Guy", and I called the game "Today's Stars...Yesterday!" We all had a great deal of fun, and lots of readers chimed in with their own examples of big-name celebs they've seen "in smaller roles, during leaner times".The way to play is very simple: Think of hot "new" stars that you see in any current TV show, and...

HBO has greenlit a stack of new series, including several that center on women, as well as pilots for new series from David Milch and Darren Star. The roster of female-dominated shows starts with The Ladies' No. 1 Detective Agency, a Botswana-based story adapted from Alexander McCall Smith's book series. According to Variety, filmmakers Anthony Minghella and Richard Curtis are on for the project, which stars chanteuse/actress Jill Scott as Precious Ramostwe. Will & Grace alumna Jhoni...

Will & Grace Creators Score New Pilot for ABC | Today's News: Our Take | 2/16/2008
Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick are joining the post-strike rush of pilot orders with their greenlit comedy for ABC.The as-yet-unnamed show (which was written on spec prior to the strike), features two best friends and biz partners one straight, one gay who have to navigate their relationship when they each find romantic partners at the same time. The comedy's likely inspired in part by the writers' real friendship and longtime working relationship. In...

While the fall season hasn't ... | Matt Roush | 11/12/2007
Question: While the fall season hasn't left me much to be excited about (with the notable exceptions of Friday Night Lights, Pushing Daisies and, yes, I'll admit it, Gossip Girl), after watching the Nov. 1 episode of Ugly Betty, I can't help feeling even more depressed about the current state of TV. Don't misunderstand — all last year, I was a huge Ugly Betty fan. I thought all the awards and accolades the show picked up were well deserved and I eagerly looked forward to this season. But with...

In your Monday column, ... | Matt Roush | 10/5/2007
Question: In your Monday column, someone wrote in to say how great the 2004-'05 season was. It truly was a remarkable season, since all of the shows I fell in loved with were renewed. However, you failed to mentioned The Office. Typically, shows progressively get worse as time passes. (Just look at Will & Grace.) The first season of The Office was pretty terrible, the second won the Emmy, and the third was better than the second, since they orchestrated a perfect way to expand their...

A few months back, while ... | Matt Roush | 9/10/2007
Question: A few months back, while discussing the Emmys, you wrote about The Office's Dwight (Rainn Wilson) having been nominated over Jim (John Krasinski). While Dwight is required to be more over-the-top, you said, Jim was more deserving of a nod. Having just finished Season 2 on DVD (I admit I haven't yet seen Season 3), I have to disagree. If you remove Dwight's bizarre antics from the show, Jim wouldn't have a chance to bring out his quirky expressions and dry sense of humor. I think it's...

I'm not a Sopranos fan by any ... | Matt Roush | 6/22/2007
Question: I'm not a Sopranos fan by any stretch of the imagination (in fact I've never seen a single minute of it), but the fan reaction to the final episode sounds exactly the same as those for the finales of Seinfeld, Will & Grace and others. Fans usually want an obvious, over-the-top, crowd-pleasing blowout, while the people actually making the show want to do a serious commentary. The Seinfeld finale wasn't as funny as many earlier episodes, but I liked that they showed they understood...

Will & Grace Trial Stymied by Tainted Juror | Today's News: Our Take | 4/27/2007
The jury foreman in a court case pitting the creators of Will & Grace against NBC Studios (whom, it has been argued, did not negotiate a fair licensing fee with the sitcom) was removed from the trial on Thursday after it was learned that he runs a website that critiques big corporations and this after the jury had reached an as-yet-undisclosed verdict. The judge presiding over the case, having now interviewed each juror about the foreman's possible influence on their decision-making,...

Fall 2007: O.C. Vet Teams Up with The Man | Today's News: Our Take | 2/21/2007
Who's doing what during this pilot season? Here's the latest from Variety and the Hollywood Reporter: With The O.C.'s swan song but a day away, Melinda Clarke has scored a gig on CBS' The Man, playing a tough and sexy policewoman who has worked with LL Cool J's undercover cop over the years. Beau Bridges is a father whose two separate sets of grown children don't know the others exist in Fox's Two Families. Last seen on Pepper Dennis, Lindsay Price is joining Kim Raver and...

Acting Up on the Awards Circuit | Matt Roush | 1/4/2007
I guess actors dont watch The Wire, either. Todays announcement of the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were a bit, well, SAG-gy with usual suspects (not to beat up on a woman whose talk show just got mercifully canceled, but one last nod for Megan Mullally for Will & Grace seems like such ancient history). The most aggravating snub, as it has been in the list of Producers Guild and Writers Guild nominations, is a complete shut-out for HBOs The Wire. Tied...

Will & Grace Duo Go Gay Again | Today's News: Our Take | 11/2/2006
But this time it's a comedy about a gay guy and his straight male friend. Variety reports that David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, the creators of NBC's long-running sitcom, have landed a pilot commitment at CBS for a new series centered on two male friends of different sexual orientations. The prospective series is said to mirror the real-life friendship between Mutchnick, who is gay, and Kohan, who is straight (not that there's anything wrong with that).

October 17, 2006: Burt Landau | TV Show Recaps | 10/18/2006
It's been a while since we've gotten an episode with a happy ending. Of course, the heartwarming end came after an hour sprinkled with evil, so it was quite worth it. Let me first say that I was surprised when Christian admitted to Kimber that he was just using her for sex. The "using Kimber for sex" part was not what threw me it was that he was so cruel about it. All this time Christian's been wooing and romancing Michelle, Ive been thinking that Kimber is who he's truly in love...

Who cares about the Lost snub ... | Matt Roush | 8/25/2006
Question: Who cares about the Lost snub and Ellen Burstyn? The Emmys got a big one right this year: Leslie Jordan has made me howl in everything he's done, from Murphy Brown to Dharma & Greg. Kudos to the Academy for awarding him for his guest role on Will & Grace. To me, this makes up for nominating Kevin James. Answer: To me, Kevin James' clowning falls under the same heading as Leslie Jordan's broad and often very funny shtick. Be that as it may, I have no gripe with Jordan...

Will & Grace Star Clocks in at 24! | Today's News: Our Take | 8/21/2006
And the rapid repopulation of 24 continues... Fox is confirming that Michael Angarano aka Jack's long-lost son on Will & Grace is joining 24 on a recurring basis. For those keeping track, that brings the number of new 24 characters to, well, a lot. In totally unrelated news, CSI fans, listen up: Got a burning question for William Petersen (Gil Grissom) and Jorja Fox (Sara Sidle)? Well, post them below ASAP! I'm told your question if posed intelligently and without...

Is it really a good idea to ... | Matt Roush | 8/4/2006
Question: Is it really a good idea to have that many stars appearing on Nip/Tuck? I am looking forward to the new season, although I was greatly disappointed in how the Carver story line ended. I'm hoping that the show will be able to flow more smoothly, but I wonder if that will be a problem with so many celebrities. Answer: True, celebrity cameos can be a distraction and a crutch (hello, Will & Grace), but given the fantastic, over-the-top nature of Nip/Tuck, it's not exactly as...

Wow. What a disaster. Way too ... | Matt Roush | 7/10/2006
Question: Wow. What a disaster. Way too much Will & Grace and The West Wing (and I am a big fan of The West Wing). No Lost? No Battlestar Galactica? But to me the big kicker is the lack of Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee. Did no one watch My Name Is Earl? I'm happy for Jaime Pressly, but Lee and Suplee are the reasons that show should have been nominated for best comedy. Answer: The omission of Earl and its hilarious male stars was one of the bigger and unhappier shocks to me as well. I...

I am really surprised at ... | Matt Roush | 6/2/2006
Question: I am really surprised at people's reaction to the finale of Will & Grace, specifically their 20-year friendship hiatus. I thought it was absolutely appropriate and necessary. For years every character on the show, including Will and Grace, bemoaned their unhealthy attachment. Yes, they were good friends, but they were constantly trying to conduct a platonic friendship in a romantic context, usually resulting in the scaring off of potential love interests. This was often played for...
