Gossip Girl Episode Recap: "Shattered Bass" Season 4, Episode 21

In this week's episode, Jack Bass returns to stir up more trouble for his nephew; Charlie and Dan delve deeper into their relationship; and Blair celebrates her engagement to the prince.

Vanessa calls Serena to try explain that Charlie sabotaged her and is playing Dan, but Serena maintains there is no way Charlie is capable of manipulating anyone, and that Vanessa got what she deserved.

Dan and Charlie look to be a full-blown couple — so much for the whole "just friends" thing (can't Dan find anyone to date outside Serena's inner circle?). He invites her to Constance's alumni fundraiser and she runs home to find something to wear, aka gloat to Serena that she's going to her alma mater's fundraiser with her ex-boyfriend. Serena is surprised, but helps her anyway. She makes a call to Cece and gets Charlie's trust fund activated for her so she can buy something to wear to the party. When Serena leaves the room, Charlie finds an old picture of Serena with Dan at her Cotillion and starts modeling her look after the photo.

Raina calls in Jack Bass, Chuck's worst adversary, to help take him down for lying about her mother's death. Jack decides to go over her head to her Russell, saying Raina's plan seemed a bit too messy and he would rather deal with him. Jack says Chuck is on a cliff and nothing would push him over the edge more than losing Blair Waldorf for good. Russell tells Jack he's in and that all he wants is a box from Chuck's place that contains mementos from his wife's affair with Bart.

Louis' engagement to Blair has caused him to lose his royal title, but Eleanor and Cyrus think Princess Sophie will change her mind about their family at the engagement party they are throwing for the new couple that night. Louis is late for his own party, however, because he goes to confront Chuck about his relationship with Blair, and notices his mangled hand in the process. Chuck tells Louis he has a long road ahead of him if he can't trust her — Blair Waldorf is nothing without her secrets.

Jack pays a visit to a drunken Chuck and tells him he is taking him in to get help for his substance abuse problem. Chuck punches Jack in the face as some big, burly men take Chuck away. Russell watches the whole scene unfold and tells Jack he is pleased. Jack tells him to take whatever he needs and leaves.

When Louis arrives to the engagement party, his mother, Princess Sophie, announces that Blair's family has won her over and he can be have his royal title reinstated. He pulls Blair aside to talk to her first, admitting his visit to Chuck and telling her he knows it was him who put that cut on her face, not her engagement ring, as she has been telling people. He wonders why she is protecting someone who has caused her so much pain. He tells her he needs to know all of her before the engagement can work, and if she is ready to do that, she can meet him at the fundraiser that night for their official debut as the prince and princess-to-be.

Charlie shows up to the party in Serena's old Cotillion dress and hairdo (how very Single White Female of her). Serena sees her walk in and realizes Vanessa may have been right about her cousin. She confronts her, but Charlie swears it's the dress she bought earlier in the day. Dan defends her and they leave for the fundraiser together. Once there, she pulls him into Headmistress Queller's office and strips. In the heat of the moment, she begs him to call her Serena. He freaks out and leaves — the first smart decision he has made when it comes to Charlie!

Jack, Nate and Chuck show up at Russell's place in a united front. They make quite the dream team, don't they? Russell seems confused until Jack explains that when Russell took a disk from Chuck's, rather than the box of mementos he claimed to want, they knew he was hiding something. They pop the disk in and see that it is a surveillance video from the night of the fire. Russell is the one locking the doors on Bart's building — he is the one who started the fire that killed his wife. He swears it was an accident. Bart and Avery called him there to tell him in person that they were in love and she wanted a divorce. When Russell started the fire, he thought it was Bart in the building, not his wife.

After the fire, Bart made an agreement with Russell that he would take responsibility for the fire due to his guilt over the affair. Bart would get to keep the company and insurance money and Russell would go back to Chicago. Russell tells Chuck he will give him anything he wants if he keeps this information to himself. He never wants Raina to find out the truth about his involvement in her mother's death. Chuck has a moment of weakness and tells him he'll give him the same deal his father gave him — get out of New York and never come back.

Raina tells Nate that Jack backed out on their plan, but she is not going to stop until Chuck feels as badly as she does. Nate tells her to stop and admits that it was her father who killed her mother, not Bart. So much for keeping that secret! She calls her father, who assumes Chuck is the one who enlightened her, and tells him he's as dead to her as her mother.

Blair shows up at Constance for her official stepping out with Louis, but gets a call saying that Chuck is on the roof ready to jump and is asking for her. She passes Charlie on her way to the roof and tells her to make sure Louis doesn't leave. When she gets to the roof, however, Russell emerges from the shadows, backing her towards the ledge.

What is Russell's end game? How long until everyone sees the crazy in Charlie? And which one of Blair's Prince Charmings will come to her rescue?

Until next week's finale... XOXO.
