Gossip Girl Episode Recap: "The Kids Are Not All Right" Season 4, Episode 12

In this week's episode, we see that the holidays did nothing to warm the hearts of our favorite Upper East Siders, as they all seem to be back to their conniving ways after winter break. Serena and Chuck team up to expose Lily, Blair lies to her mother to secure her own future, and Nate finds himself covering for his recently-paroled father.

Winter Blues

Serena is back from her quest to free Ben, but the judge she was trying to track down was nowhere to be found, so she didn't make any headway. Blair and Dan are both defensive when she asks how their breaks went: "Why? What did you hear?" Did these two share more than just a friendly movie?

To further her pursuit for power, Blair has her sights set on interning for one of the country's most successful businesswomen — PepsiCo CEO, Indra Nooyi. When she finds out Ms. Nooyi has a fitting with her mother that day, Blair feigns interest in the fashion world in hopes of an invitation to the meeting. Eleanor is thrilled that Blair is finally interested in her industry and gives her another assignment instead. Blair takes matters into her own hands and moves up Indra's fitting without telling her mother. Eleanor beats her to the punch, though, and is upset that Blair would lie to her for her own gain.

Dan spends the entire episode waiting for Serena (come to think of it, he has spent the last four seasons waiting for Serena). She keeps blowing him off to help Chuck get to the bottom of her mother's lies about the sale of Bass Industries, and to continue her mission to free Ben. Dan waits for her so long that he blows an important internship interview. Blair sees the whole thing unfold and scolds Serena for constantly taking advantage of Dan's devotion. Serena is surprised that Blair suddenly cares so much about Dan's feelings.

Chuck and Serena break into Lily's lockbox at the bank and find the affidavit that she forged Serena's name on to put Ben in prison. Their grand plan is to take it to a handwriting expert to prove that it was not Serena's signature. That will surely exonerate Ben! Chuck has a change of heart when he confronts Lily at her apartment and she tells him that Bass Industries was falling apart, and the only reason she agreed to sell was that the buyer promised to keep the company intact and allow Chuck to still be involved. She tells him that she isn't able to disclose any more than that, but everything will become clearer in 24 hours.

Chuck assumes the buyer is Russell Thorpe, his father's old business partner whom he looks up to. He approaches him at his party that night to thank him for keeping his father's legacy alive, but Thorpe tells him he is not the buyer; that if he was, he would be doing quite the contrary to preserving the company - he would rip it apart and sell the pieces to get Bart back for running him out of New York.

Serena finds out from Eric that Lily had been hiding Judge Stevens at the Palace Hotel the entire time Serena was trying to track him down. She is furious and runs to a New York Post reporter to give him the affidavit that will expose her mother, but she ends up mixing it up with an article Dan had written that was in the same manila envelope. Family crisis averted!

Lily breaks the news that that the Bass Industries sale is off. Someone tipped the buyer off to the events that just unfolded at the party. Worried about what family tension would do to the acquisition process, they pulled out before the deal was complete. Much to Chuck's dismay, Thorpe announces that he is stepping in to buy the company.

Night Moves

After the party, Serena apologizes to Dan for taking advantage of him. They decide this is not the right time for them to jump back into a relationship full-steam.

Upset that he has to keep lying to his father's parole officer, Nate calls his dad to find out where he is. Mr. Archibald says he is in the middle of a job interview, and the camera pans to Thorpe.

Chuck is at the bar drowning his sorrows when Thorpe's daughter/VP of his company, Raina, appears and admits that it was her father who tipped off the buyer to the family's dispute. Then she propositions him. How professional! Since Old Chuck is back, he obviously takes her up on her offer.

Blair apologizes to her mother for shunning her career. She says a friend (Dan!) changed her mind when he called her a dictator of taste and encouraged her to keep an open mind about it. Dan shows up and they pretend to be revolted at the thought of each other's company, but they head out to the movie theater together anyway. Is Humpdorf the new Brangelina?!

Serena shows up at the prison to see Ben, but the guard tells her he's been released by a Judge Stevens. Her mother followed through, after all! Serena leaves and conveniently runs into Ben at the bus stop. She asks him if he wants to grab a coffee. He agrees without hesitation... because jumping back into the now-legal arms of the girl who landed you in prison is a surefire way to rebuild your reputation.

What did you think of this week's episode? Can Serena and Ben make it work? Will Dan and Blair be seeing many more movies together? How will Chuck's relationship with Raina affect the sale of Bass Industries? Until next week... XOXO.
