Gossip Girl Episode Recap: "Belles de Jour" Season 4, Episode 1

In the season premiere, we find our favorite Upper East Siders wrapping up their summer vacations in various locations around the globe. Single gals Serena and Blair spare no expense in Paris, while Nate spares no busty blonde, nor bubbly brunette, back in Manhattan. Dan spends the summer playing house with Georgina in Brooklyn, and Chuck has been MIA since we last saw him fighting for his life on the streets of Prague.

I'm Ashley, and I'll be your Season 4 guide into the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite!

Avoidance seems to be the theme of this week's episode, as the characters are all struggling with facing their problems and getting back to the real world now that their summer fun is over (if the real world is having a black AMEX and private jet on standby every time a little teen angst occurs, then sign me up!). Blair has been smiling her way through endless amounts of retail therapy, all the while avoiding the "Chuck-sized cloud" hanging over her head. She is charmed by a fellow Manet-lover at the museum, and when she overhears that he is part of the Grimaldi dynasty of Monaco, she believes she has finally met her Prince Charming and enlists Serena for a double date with the royal and his friend.

Driving Miss Waldorf

Serena has been flirting her way through every cute bartender and boy-on-a-Vespa in Paris just so she doesn't have to deal with the dreaded Nate vs. Dan dilemma. S is also keeping her acceptance to Columbia a secret from Blair, knowing how upset B would be for encroaching on her territory. She agrees to the double date, knowing it will make Blair happy, but when they men arrive to pick them up, Blair realizes she was mistaken — her date is actually the royal chauffeur, while Serena's date was the Grimaldi heir (some girls have all the luck!). Blair is forced to do something she's never done before — ride shotgun.

She pouts throughout the entire meal and has a meltdown when she receives Serena's Columbia news. Serena leaves mid-date to pack her bags for New York, but not before she gets pushed into a fountain by Blair. Blair realizes she's been acting like a spoiled brat when her date reveals that he is, in fact, the prince, but had lied to test her motives. She returns to Serena to beg her to stay in Paris, telling her that she has been acting out because she is heartbroken and fears she will never get over Chuck.

Baby Mama Drama

Dan has yet to tell his family that he has a son, Milo, with the Wicked Witch of the Upper East Side, Georgina Sparks. He confides to Vanessa that he hasn't gotten around to a paternity test, but that Georgina is a good mother and has genuinely changed (You should know better by now, Dan!). Meanwhile, Georgina shows up unannounced to Rufus and Lily's to spring the baby news on them without Dan knowing. Georgina swears Dan is the father, and he calls the "doctor," who confirms this is true. Somehow Dan doesn't question the results of this secret paternity test (Did she pluck a strand of hair from his head? Sneak a swab of saliva in his sleep?), so he signs the birth certificate. Georgina packs up and leaves as Dan and Milo are napping.

Wherefore Art Thou Romeo?

Nate has been trying to forget Serena by sleeping his way through Chuck's Little Black Book, when he meets his Juliet (Melrose Place's Katie Cassidy) in a coffee shop. She shuns his recent playboy ways, but he has her intrigued when he runs into her again at Eleanor Waldorf's Fashion's Night Out event. He confesses to her that his summer conquests were just a way to mask the pain of heartbreak. She agrees to meet him for coffee, and on her way out of her apartment, we see that not only is she some sort of clothes thief (scandal!), but an entire wall of her apartment is devoted to the Gossip gang — newspaper clippings, mugshots, paparazzi photos — no, could it be?! Is Juliet Gossip Girl?

What the Chuck?

We see a pair of gloved hands going through what seems to be Chuck's belongings. Lily receives a phone call from France saying a body that had been shot had washed up to shore, and the identification matched Chuck Bass. Little does she know, Chuck is alive and well, thanks to a mysterious blonde with a healthy supply of vodka and gauze bandages. Chuck wakes up with the blonde at his bedside, removes a ring with his initials on it, and tells her his name is Henry. Chuck wakes up again on a train with the blonde after a nightmare about the incident where all his previous misdeeds flashed before his eyes. "You had the dream again," she says. "I hoped it wouldn't follow us from Prague... welcome to Paris, Henry."

Oh! Mon! Dieu! What did you think of the first episode? Who is Juliet? Who is baby Milo's daddy? What will happen if Blair runs into Chuck in Paris with his new lady friend? So many questions! Until next week... XOXO.
