Glee Episode Recap: "Britney/Brittany" Season 2, Episode 2

Everyone's favorite ditzy Cheerio, Brittany, takes on Britney Spears in this week's episode. Meanwhile, Will meets Emma's new boyfriend, Dr. Carl Howell, played by Full House hunk John Stamos.

Hello and welcome to the start of the Season 2 recaps of Glee. I know Season 2 started last week, but I was otherwise occupied covering some of my favorite TV shows in Vancouver. Though, I have to say, Glee really kicked off strong. I personally loved their rendition of "Empire State of Mind," and I can't stop listening to Charice and Lea Michele faux-battle to "Telephone."

Now that I got that out of the way, let's get Gleeful. I'm expecting many Brittany-isms in this Brittany-centric episode, so it's got to be funny.

The episode practically starts with a Brittany-ism when she replies that Christopher Cross discovered America. Not quite, my dear, but close. Will is trying to push a new lesson on the kids: Music can be controled and restrained.

The glee club isn't digging it though, and Kurt suggests listening to the Facebook campaign that asks that they sing Britney Spears at the Homecoming assembly. Will protests that Britney is not a good role model, and for a second even Brittany doesn't want to do Britney. Why, you ask? Because they have the same name.

Brittany's middle name is Susan, her last name (did we ever know her full name before?!) is Pierce. Brittany S. Pierce. Say it quicker with me people: Brittany SPierce.

"I've lived my entire life in Britney Spears' shadow," she says. "I will never be as talented or as famous. I hope you'll all respect that I want glee club to remain a place where I, Brittany S. Pierce, can escape the torment of Britney Spears."

Will declares the Britney topic dead, and moves on to Michael Bolton, who coincidentally got booted from Dancing with the Stars the very same night. Emma, however, actually thinks Britney is a perfect symbol of female growth.

Will proceeds to show his jealousy towards Emma's new boyfriend, who pops in unexpectedly. Hello, John Stamos. Since the school has been dragging their feet on Carl giving a dental hygiene lecture, Will suggests he come talk to the glee club.

Elsewhere, Artie breaks up a fight between Finn and some football jocks after they tear up Finn's lettermens jacket. The whole exchange is caught by Coach Bieste, who gives a knowing look before walking away.

Carl gives the glee clubbers a pill that will turn their teeth blue if they missed any plaque. In other news, Santana says what we're all thinking: "Can I just say that you're the hottest dentist I've ever seen?" Carl responds with the obvious: "Yeah, I get that all the time."

Following the blue-teeth reveals of Rachel, Artie and Brittany, the latter finds herself in Carl's office for a checkup. "This room looks like the one on that spaceship where I got probed," she says. Because of her bad teeth, Carl puts her under anesthesia — "Like rufies?" she asks — and turns on some Britney Spears to relax her.

In a drug-hazed dream, Brittany reenacts the "I'm a Slave" video, giant yellow snake and all. I've said this before, but Heather Morris is an amazing dancer. Dare I say, even better than Britney Spears? Check. Rockin' voice? Check. As long as Heather doesn't shave her head, I think her career will grow just splendidly.

Back at school, Finn is down on the fact that he's not on the football team anymore, meaning he's not cool anymore. Rachel tries to cheer him up using honesty, but it backfires when Finn agrees with insults Santana and Brittany throw her way.

Santana goes to Carl's office hoping to be put under anesthesia, and Carl reluctantly agrees. The bitchy Cheerio goes under at the same time as Brittany, while they both wear headphones blasting "Me Against the Music," originally sung by Spears and Madonna. Hey, Mark Kanemura from So You Think You Can Dance is in the video! Can we start a campaign to get tWitch on Glee?

Side note: Yes, the episode was a little heavy on the music videos, but there are only so many ways to fit in new songs without turning into High School Musical. Get over it, people!

The video ends with the actual Britney Spears pinning Brittany against a wall. "You're really hot," Brittany says, also commenting that Spears' breath smells nice. Her response: Yes, it does because this is all a fantasy.

The following day, Brittany demands to have every solo in the glee club. Having sung better than Britney, she now realizes what a powerful woman she, herself, is. "I'm more talented than all of you, I see that more clearly now," she says. "It's Brittany...bitch."

Will still refuses to do Britney, and Kurt finally loses it on him, which lands him in the principal's office. Later, Will goes to Carl's office and tries to continue to kill him with kindness, but Carl cuts him off. Will admits he still has feelings, but Carl says Emma chose him and Will needs to back off. He concedes to back off for now, but Carl pushes that Will needs to be more impulsive.

In Carl's office, Rachel imagines herself in the "...Baby One More Time" video, with her teacher being Britney Spears. Not sure how I feel about Rachel in a school girl outfit. Moving on. I did like the "David at the Dentist" shout out at the end though: "Is this real life?" Rachel asks.

When Rachel arrives in said school girl outfit the next day, Finn covers her up quickly. To level the playing field, Rachel gives her blessing to Finn to rejoin the football team.

Background Brittany-ism during this scene: While touching Jacob's hair, she says, "It looks like a Jewish cloud." FTW.

Will takes Emma for a ride in his new convertible, which means he's clearly not backing off. And, um, yellow? Terri cuts off their sweet moment, yelling that he needs to be paying alimony and not buying cars. Plus, she thinks Will will eventually come to his senses and come back to her, so he shouldn't squander their savings.

After Sue comes across Jacob naked in the library pleasuring himself to the thought of Rachel in the school girl outfit, she deters Will from ever doing Spears' songs because she's a gateway drug.

Britney Spears in a Cheerio outfit tells Tina that she's an idiot for breaking up with Artie. "And I'm stronger," he says, before beginning his rendition of "Stronger" on the football field with the jocks. Clearly, another anesthesia-induced dream.

Finn prepares to get into shape so he can try to get back on the team. Meanwhile, Artie wants to pursue getting on the team as well — and much to their surprise, Coach Beiste thinks it's a good idea. Rachel, however, isn't pleased and wants Finn to choose between her and football.

Will finally succumbs to doing Britney, though says he's going to perform with the glee club. They kick do "Toxic," which is actually pretty fun since it's mixed with Fosse-style dancing. The kids are digging it, much to Sue's chagrin, who pulls the fire alarm causing mass hysteria.

After Sue yells at him, Will has a realization and apologizes to Emma for being inappropriate. She just wanted Will to loosen up, especially in light of her relationship with Carl. Comparing Spears to a grenade, in a sense, Emma says Will needs to rein it in.

And Quinn has a line! Where has she been this season? She thinks she and Finn should get back together now that he's back on the football team, but he refuses, saying that she needs to respect that he's with Rachel. It turns out to be a ruse. Rachel asked her to say that, and it hurts me just a tiny bit seeing Quinn be upset learning Finn really does love Rachel.

Another episode of Glee closes with Rachel singing a ballad that tugs at the heart strings. This time, it's Paramore's "The Only Exception."
