Glee Episode Recap: "Prom Queen" Season 2, Episode 20

On this week's episode of Glee, New Directions gets ready for prom. As Kurt plans to make a point at the dance, the fight for prom queen intensifies. Meanwhile,  Artie tries to win Brittany back, and Jesse St. James returns!

As prom nears, Principal Figgins asks Will to have New Directions perform at prom because his first choice for entertainment, Air Supply, backed out. Sue objects, but must concede, so she offers up a list of songs they're not allowed to sing. As Will announces this to the club, Rachel immediately suggests they sing "Run Joey Run," which, of course, was on Sue's list.

Mercedes is upset they have to perform at prom because she has no date, so she rushes out of the rehearsal room. Rachel goes after Mercedes, imploring her to be her date to prom. The pair decide to ask Sam, who wasn't planning on going because it's too costly, to be their date.

Kurt decides to ask Blaine to come to his prom. Blaine is initially hesitant, revealing that when he first came out, he asked the only other gay kid at his school to the Sadie Hawkins dance, which resulted in both of them being beaten up by bullies. While Kurt gives Blaine an out, he thinks this will be the perfect opportunity to stand up to all the bullies.

The glee gals invite Kurt to critique their prom dresses. After he praises Santana's fiery red choice, he reveals he's taking Blaine to prom. In light of this news, Santana suggests the Bully Whips escort Kurt around school so he'll be safe before the prom — she's also hoping this will get her sympathy votes.

Because Jacob had earlier suggested that Lauren has neutered Puck, New Directions' resident bad boy sets out to up his street cred. Since he'll be the prime suspect to spike the punch at prom, he asks Artie to help him, but Artie is only focused on getting Brittany back.

Meanwhile, Rachel heads to the auditorium to practice her prom song. As she sings John Legend's "Rolling in the Deep," Jesse St. James joins in with her. (Honestly, I like the original better.) It turns out, Jesse got booted from school because he was only attending his show choir classes. He has realized he traded love for the championship and has come to make amends, so he asks Rachel to prom.

Finn confronts Rachel for deciding to go to prom with Jesse, reminding her that he once threw eggs at her head. He admits to still caring about Rachel, but she says he must support her decision. Finn has been so stressed about prom that he doesn't want to go anymore, but Rachel suggests he keep everything simple.

Artie interrupts Brittany's Home Ec class with a sweet version of Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely," backed by Puck, Sam, Finn and Mike. Even though Brittany says the song is lovely, she's still mad about him calling her stupid, and plans to go to prom alone. Prompted by this, Artie decides to help Puck spike the punch.

Kurt decides to wear a kilt to prom, but Burt says he's purposely trying to get attention. Blaine agrees, saying they don't want to give anyone a reason to start trouble. Kurt decides to go wearing the kilt anyway.

While Dave Karofsky, who's a member of Bully Whips, is escorting Kurt to class, Kurt notes that people haven't been hassling him that week. He thinks people have lightened up, and maybe Dave will also be able to come out. Dave cries, saying how sorry he is for bullying Kurt.

On prom night, Jesse, Rachel, Mercedes and Sam convene at Breadsticks for dinner.   After Jesse inadvertently makes Sam feel bad about not having money, Jesse says he wants to open a dance studio to consult for show choirs. Rachel says it's a great idea and plan to ask Will to hire him. (OK, figure this out kids. Jesse is still working for Vocal Adrenaline! He's come in to spy! Just me?)

At prom, the glee boys kick off the night of music with Rebecca Black's "Friday," which certainly won't help Puck's street cred. Rachel follows up with Christina Perri's "Jar of Hearts," which I loved from So You Think You Can Dance. She is pointedly singing to Finn, which unnerves Quinn.

Puck attempts to distract Sue, but she catches Artie spiking the punch bowl. She interrogates him for hours, trying to find out who asked him to do it. Sue will find out later that Artie only spiked it with lemonade.

Back at prom, Blaine, Tina and Brittany sing "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You," from Black Kids. Finn is upset that Jesse and Rachel are dancing too close, and the boys end up getting into a shoving match. Sue gets between them, kicking them both out of the prom, leaving Quinn and Rachel dateless.

And the winner of prom king and queen are Dave and ... Kurt, who got an overwhelming number of write-in votes. It seems everyone wasn't hassling Kurt because they were planning to embarrass him at the prom all along. Kurt rushes out crying, baffled that he thought everything had really changed.

Meanwhile, Quinn blames Rachel for her loss of the prom queen crown. Quinn slaps Rachel, saying everyone knows Finn still wants to be with Rachel. Santana, too, is upset she didn't win, thinking that everyone may have found out she's a lesbian. Brittany says they just know Santana is not being herself.

Kurt decides to go back inside and accept his award. "Eat your heart out, Kate Middleton," he says, to a round of applause and a pat on the back from the principal. Because the king and queen traditionally dance together, Kurt whispers to Dave this is the perfect opportunity for him to come out. Dave can't do it, so he runs off. Blaine fills in, and the two sway to Mercedes and Santana singing ABBA's "Dancing Queen."
