Glee Episode Recap: "The Substitute" Season 2, Episode 7

In this week's episode of Glee, Holly Holliday a substitute teacher — played by Gwyneth Paltrow — takes over New Directions when Will falls ill. Mr. Schuester will have to win back his glee club and his school when Sue takes over McKinley High.

In order to take over the school, Sue purposely gets a student seriously ill and has her sneeze on Principal Figgins. Unfortunately, Will also gets sick and has to find a substitute teacher for his Spanish class. (The scene where Will sees the glee clubbers as children is well done and massively hilarious.)

When Rachel tries to take over the glee club, Kurt enlists Holly Holliday's help. The substitute teacher is actually much cooler than any other sub I've ever had. Holly makes a splash with New Directions by basically letting them do whatever they want, particularly with songs. To prove she's open to anything, she sings Cee-lo's "Forget You."

Elsewhere, Sue tries to flex her power around the school. First, she attempts to cut the football team, but is thwarted by Coach Beiste's logic: "If you're cutting the football team, who are your Cheerios going to cheer for?" Next, she decides to ban the precious tater-tots that the students love so much. This kicks off a tot war by Mercedes, which we'll come back to later.

Will is nursed back to health by Teri, his ex-wife, who is now on medication to keep her emotions in check. Through his sickly haze, Will imagines he's performing "Make 'Em Laugh," from Singin' in the Rain. Also in his sick state, he sleeps with Teri. Oh, Mr. Schue, what a terrible, terrible idea.

On top of that, Will now has to worry about his new competition in Holly, who is becoming widely liked by all at McKinley High. Holly continues to win over the club by singing "Nowadays / Hot Honey Rag" from Chicago with Rachel.

Sue's next act for school domination comes when Principal Figgins gets fired because of Sue's popularity. She decides her first official act as principal is to fire Will.

Meanwhile, Kurt tries to set Mercedes up on a date so she won't feel left out as his new relationship blossoms with Blaine. However, the double date turns into a trio at Sticks, though Kurt and Blaine dominate the conversation, leaving her feeling left out.

To distract herself, Mercedes later tampers with Sue's car in an act of tot war, which puts Holly in hot water. Holly realizes that she's not a very good teacher at all, but that stems from the first time she was a substitute teacher, which included being punched in the face by a student. As she's venting to Will, Terri comes to his house and freaks out, but he sets things straight: They will never be together again.

Kurt confronts Mercedes about her substituting food for love, and also trying to substitute her friendship with Kurt by searching for a boyfriend. When she exits, the bullying football jock approaches Kurt to make sure he hasn't told anyone they kissed, and actually threatens to kill him if he doesn't keep his mouth shut.

After New Directions praise Will, he is reinstated to the glee club. However, the club still isn't digging his song choices, so he enlists Holly's help in making "Singin' in the Rain" more modern. They episode closes on Will, Holly and the club singing a mashup of "Singin' in the Rain" and "Umbrella."

Paltrow sure made a splash, huh? Though she may have been a bit stiff during "Forget You," she did hit her stride with "Conjunction Junction." What I really look forward to is where the storyline with Kurt and the football jock is heading.

How about you? What did you think of Paltrow's debut? Do you want to see a little Holly and Will action? Sound off in the comments.
