Glee Episode Recap: "The Rhodes Not Taken" Season 1, Episode 5

In "The Rhodes Not Taken," Will brings in a ringer, April Rhodes, played by Emmy winner Kristin Chenoweth, to replace Rachel. She's a bit of a bad influence on the group, though. Also, Finn tries to get Rachel to come back to glee by using an unconventional approach. Elsewhere, Quinn's morning sickness leads to a huge reveal. Let's get started...

The episode kicks off with another rendition of "Don't Stop Believing," except this time, Quinn is taking the lead in Rachel's absence. However, morning sickness has set in and girl can't hold a note, let alone her breakfast. The rest of the glee club knows they need Rachel back, badly.

Terri, Will's wife, is having the opposite problem. Yeah, she can scarf down several slices of pie, but unlike Quinn, she's not losing her meals. So, Will's getting suspicious. Saved by the distracting waiter, Will gets an idea of how to improve glee's standing. Six-year seniors can stick around to stay in the glee club. It's time for a ringer.

Back at school, Finn's called to Emma's office for some "special guidance." She's not a very good liar regarding his current predicament, but she is able to convince him that he could get a free ride to school if he sticks with glee. Emma also pushes him to see if he can convince Rachel to come back, because without their star singer, that scholarship will slip through his fingers.

Emma gives up the goods to Will, but it's not what you're thinking. She hands over April Rhodes' confidential file, which proves she technically hasn't graduated from high school. Will was mesmerized by her back in high school. Light bulb! Emma realizes that he's actually had feelings for other women than his wife. Could she have a chance?

After Will finds April online, he heads for her posh mansion. As we teased before, April likes to hit the bottle hard. She's also the kind of girl who's open to, um, internet appointments. Too bad she doesn't actually have a home to fill those rendezvous. She's a squatter. Taking the convo and the vino to the curb, April explains to Will how her life spiraled downward. Will, playing the knight in shining armor, offers April a spot in the glee club. "We'll get you sobered up and buy you some underwear," Will says.

Will introduces April to the glee members, who think it's a terrible idea to have an old person in the club. To prove she's an amazing singer, April busts her first of three songs: "Maybe This Time," which is interspersed with Rachel taking on the same Cabaret number. "Stick that in your pipe and smoke it," says April when she's shown her stuff. A round of applause to both Chenoweth and Lea Michele from this writer.

The glee club, however, doesn't share the same sentiment. Glee already lost one gal who liked the spotlight; it's doubtful they want to take on another. Time for April to win them over. She gets Kurt drunk, she teaches Mercedes and Tina how to shoplift, and she hits the showers...in the boy's locker room. Consider them on her side.

Rachel takes on another number from Cabaret, but Sandy's not digging it. He's just using a bit of reverse psychology to keep her coming back. This later leads to a bathroom breakdown, where April tries to comfort her. When April professes that Finn could be one of her many targets, Rachel tries to put her down. April's not scared. She used to be the stuff and she's going to keep it that way.

First bad sign of April's reach, Kurt's turned into an alky. His stench wafts in Emma's direction one morning, just seconds before he pukes on her. After getting a few decontaminating showers at the hospital, Emma tells Will that April is likely behind it.

Finn sticks to his promise earlier in the episode of helping Rachel practice for her role in the musical, but he's really trying to get her to come back to glee. Later, on their bowling date, Finn's flattery and flirtation works wonders on Rachel. He tells Rachel that the club misses their friend. After Rachel scores a strike, she shares a kiss with Finn and decides to quit the musical and return to glee.

A few lanes over, Will sits April down for a talk. She's a bad influence, big time. Wanting to hold on to her popularity, she tells Will she wants "back on the wagon." Will tells April he's always dreamed of singing with her, since she's the reason he joined glee club in the first place. In a very karaoke moment, Will and April belt Heart's "Alone."

The club sits around pondering what's wrong with Quinn. Tthat is, until Puck reveals that Quinn's with child. Bad timing for Rachel, whose triumphant return to glee is marred by the fact that Finn's going to be a daddy. In the first slap of the series, ouch, Finn apologizes for not telling Rachel, revealing his ulterior motive on why he was trying to get Rachel to return. As expected, Rachel's on the outs from the club once again.

For their first performance in front of a real audience, glee is decked out in Western gear. April comes in wasted and plants one on Puck. Despite her demeanor, they still perform "Last Name," very fitting for April. With this performance, Rachel gets a taste of what glee is like without her. Lucky for her, Will wants April out. Even April knows she doesn't belong. She got her standing ovation and it's time for her to leave. She's off to get sober and try her hand on Broadway, or maybe Branson.

Before their final number, Will tells the club that April's out. Saving the show, Rachel comes back and apologizes. Can we all agree that glee rocked Queen's "Somebody to Love?"

Time to discuss! Kristin Chenoweth was amazing, no? Do you want to see her back on Glee? Do you think Rachel and Finn have a chance? When will Finn finally figure out that he's not the baby daddy? And when is Will going to see that's he's not even going to be a father?

Hit the comments after you watch "Somebody to Love."
