Glee Episode Recap: "Sectionals" Season 1, Episode 13

In the midseason finale of Glee, the club heads for sectionals. However, Quinn's baby daddy drama may tear the club apart, hindering them in the competition. Meanwhile, Emma and Ken's wedding is coming, and Will makes a decision that may change his life.

While the club waits to find out who their sectionals coach will be, Rachel ponders why Puck rushed to Quinn's aid the day before when she slipped at rehearsal. Everyone else in glee is clued in to the baby daddy drama, sans Rachel, and, of course, Finn, but they're not giving up any info. Rachel claims to be psychic and thinks there's definitely something up.

Kurt, Mercedes, Tina and Artie then go into action mode. They need to make sure that Rachel doesn't find out about Puck being the father because she'll immediately tell Finn and ruin any chance they have of winning sectionals. The fab four blame the cheerios in the bunch, since Santana is "dating" Puck. "Sex is not dating," she retorts. "If it were, Santana and I would be dating," says Brittany. That's a hilarious and interesting development for another time.

Elsewhere, Rachel approaches Quinn asking about her baby and if she's done genetic testing. Smart and devious plan on Rachel's part when she freaks Quinn out by saying that only Jews carry the gene for Tay-Sachs disease. Quinn then asks Puck to take her to the doctor to get tested, while Rachel is not too far away.

The glee club finally has a replacement for Schuester during sectionals. Emma has pushed back her wedding a few hours to be there for the kids, though her hubby-to-be isn't too pleased with that plan. Will tells the club how proud he is and makes his exit. The club is now officially in Emma's hands and their first goal is to make their set list. "Proud Mary" and "Don't Stop Believin" are on deck and Rachel offers to do a ballad, but Mercedes isn't having it. She wants a moment to shine and proves her stuff while singing "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," from Dreamgirls. Can I just note that Amber Riley really belted that tune and meant business? Thatta' girl! Rachel agrees with the club and would love to hear her sing that at sectionals.

"I gotta be honest, I'm kind of pumped about sectionals," Finn tells Rachel after practice. "It's been a hard couple of months with Quinn and the baby and everything. I really think that winning could make everything good for a while." This breaks Rachel's heart just a little bit and she decides to tell Finn that Puck is actually the father of Quinn's baby. Finn proceeds to punch Puck out in the choir room, yelling at him to tell the truth, while a crying Quinn looks on. Quinn finally admits that Puck's the father, but Finn says he's done with her and everyone else in the glee club.

Rachel apologizes to Quinn, but she's not mad at her. "What you did was what I wasn't brave enough to do: tell the truth," Quinn says. Rachel reveals that she initially broke the news so she could be with him, but now they've both lost Finn. Once Rachel leaves, Puck says he wants to be there for her, but Quinn tells him that she's going to go at it alone.

The glee kids head out for sectionals, without both Will and Finn, but our favorite nerd, Jacob, is there to fill in, though he'll just be swaying in the back. Once they reach the competition, the club finds out they'll be performing last, which Rachel says is actually a good thing. What they don't know is that their rival schools have McKinley High's set list and are about to perform their music before they do. Ho-hum.

First up is the Jane Adams Academy singing Mercedes' ballad, then "Proud Mary" in wheelchairs. Emma calls Will to share the devastating news that all their material is useless. Will calls out Sue for leaking the set list, but she insists that he has no proof. "It's time to face facts William. At 1pm this afternoon, your little club will have had its shot at the big time and they will have failed. Glee club will be cancelled and all that money Figgins has been funneling into your budget will finally, and rightfully, be restored to mine," she says. Furious, Will is now on a mission to expose her.

Will finds Finn and tries to persuade him to go to sectionals, otherwise, glee will lose. "Why do I always have to be the bigger man?" Finn asks. "Because sometimes being special sucks," says Will. Finn just wishes the dirty slate of drama could be wiped clean. "Well Finn, you can't always get what you want," Will tells him. I smell a certain song coming! Thanks to Will conspicuously leaving his keys in the locker room, Finn is now off to save the day at sectionals.

Meanwhile, Emma approaches the rival schools' leaders. "You should be ashamed. Aren't you ashamed? You're educators. Actually, you're more than that. You take care of disadvantaged kids and you're teaching them that the only way they can compete in this world is by cheating. I'm sorry, but what kind of message is that?" she says in that disappointed voice where you just wish she was actually yelling instead. Snap! Though the directors try to deny it, Emma puts them in their place more. "You know what the real shame is? Is that maybe if you had believed in them just a little bit more, they would've been amazing out there without cheating." Double snap!

The club accuses the cheerios of leaking the set list, to which Brittany admits she did. Santana, on the other hand, finally says, "I like being in glee club, it's the best part of my day, OK?" This still doesn't change the fact that they're screwed. Rachel takes the lead to pick up the shambles and put together a set list. Mercedes concedes that Rachel should sing the ballad, while they'll end with "Somebody to Love." Just when they think they're finished because they need one more song, bam! Finn saves the day with a new tune.

Puck tries to patch things up, but Finn isn't having it. "You OK?" Rachel asks. "Don't worry about me," he tells her. "This is all up to you now. You wanted the solo; you wanted the chance to be the star. This is your chance. Don't screw it up." And away we go...

The McKinley High glee club kicks off with "Don't Rain on My Parade," sung by Rachel Berry while walking through the audience. One word: Amazing. Once the club joins her on stage, they lead into, you guessed it, "You Can't Always Get What You Want," by The Rolling Stones. They've actually got people out of their seats dancing, though the Jane Adams Academy doesn't look pleased one bit. And though Will can't be there in person, he, too, gets to enjoy each song through Emma's cell phone.

Over in the judges' room, the deliberations aren't going very well. The three judges have completely different takes on what's good. While the glee club eavesdrops, Grace Hitchens from Jane Adams comes over to say that they were amazing, but the club calls them out for cheating. Grace tries to come clean to the judges, but they've already made their decision.

Elsewhere, Terri and Will run into each other at home. Terri tells him that she's been seeing a therapist and pleads with him to come back to her. "I'm looking at you and I'm trying," he says. "I really want to feel that thing I always felt when I looked at you before, that feeling of family and love, but it's gone." With that, he makes his exit to Ken and Emma's wedding, but he's the one and only guest. Ken dumped Emma because she had moved the wedding back. She admits to Will that she wasn't doing it for the kids, but for him. Because she can't be around Will, she's put in her resignation at school. "I just left my wife," Will tells her, but Emma doesn't want to be the rebound girl.

Figgins sits down with Sue and Will, revealing that both of the directors from the rival schools say Sue sold New Directions up the river by giving away their set list. She tries to slide away without punishment, but Figgins strips her of being the cheerios coach and suspends her from school. Sue's got a whole lot of nothing to say as she makes her exit. Justice! Thanks to Sue being caught, Will is now back with the glee club. However, Sue threatens Will, saying she'll be back after her probation with more vengeance in her heart. "Prepare to be crushed," she says.

When Will is reunited with the glee club, they reveal that the won sectionals. That's not the end of glee though, because it's off to regionals to battle Vocal Adrenaline. Because Schu missed their original performance, glee sings "My Life Would Suck Without You" as a special performance. During which, we see that Emma is packing up her desk, preparing to leave McKinley High for good, which sends Will running down the hall to find her. And what we've been waiting for since Episode 1 finally occurs: Will and Emma kiss!

And with that, my friends, we say goodbye to Glee until April. I know, I know, it's going to be a long few months until we get our next fix, but at least the Fox series ended on a high note. Now that we've gotten some resolution, it's time to hit the comments. Here are a few topics of discussion that will hopefully keep you warm at night until the show returns...

  • Are you happy that Will left his wife for Emma?
  • How do you think Sue will try to take the glee club down next?
  • Should Finn and Rachel finally get together?
  • What songs do you want to hear from the glee club in the New Year?
  • Is it just me, or does New Directions need some serious dance lessons before they even try to take on Vocal Adrenaline?
