Glee Episode Recap: "Mattress" Season 1, Episode 12

The real baby bump is finally revealed in Wednesday night's episode of Glee, causing Will to lose it. The club loses a member when they accidentally get themselves disqualified and Sue gets knocked down a peg when she loses to a student. Find out where all the loss sprung from in this week's recap...

Kicking off the episode, Will joins Emma and Ken for lunch only to find that yearbook pictures are on the way. Ken has been working to lose weight for photos and also for the wedding, which has been scheduled on the same day as the glee club's sectionals competition. Looks like Will won't be making it to the nuptials.

Sue enters, frankly looking like crap. She got work done for the pictures, so she should look gorgeous by the time they come around. Also looking hot will be the cheerios, but the glee kids won't be looking, well, like anything since Sue worked it that they don't get a photo in the yearbook.

Figuring the hazing will get worse, Kurt urges to agree with Figgins' ruling not to have a yearbook picture taken, but Will is going to fight the motion. Mr. Schu argues with the principal to have their picture in the yearbook, but he is going to charge $325 for a quarter page.

Unlike the rest of the glee club, Rachel wants to make sure their faces are plastered in the yearbook. "Make fun of me you all you want, but school pictures mean everything to me," ponders Rachel. "They're great practice for getting photographed by the paparazzi. Invasive as the press may be, stars are dependent on them for their fame and I feel I must be prepared." Ah yes, of course Rachel would join every club possible at McKinley High just to have more photos of herself in the yearbook.

Meanwhile, Quinn thinks about how much she misses cheerios. She vows that she'll be in the cheerleading photo in the yearbook whether Sue likes it or not. Rachel's also vying for another spot in the yearbook, even asking Kurt if he'll co-create a new club, GAYLESBALL, i.e. Gay-Lesbian Alliance. Sorry Rach, Kurt's not having it.

While deciding what to wear in the yearbook photo, Will tells Terri that he wants to buy an ad so the club can have a photo. She refuses, saying they don't even have enough money for themselves. Will defies her, cutting the principal a check. Because there is only so much space on their quarter page, Will tells the club that they must vote for two team captains to be featured.

Since the club unanimously votes for Rachel, and only her, to be their representative, Will conveys to Emma that the members are still embarrassed to be in glee. He also brings up the wedding, saying Ken purposely scheduled it on that Saturday so Emma could not make it to sectionals. "I'm marrying Ken, Will. I know I've definitely given him reason in the past to be jealous, but I need you to know that I'm done with that now," she tells him. Despite his 74 flaws, as of yesterday, Ken is a good man, so she's going to give her heart away to him.

Will turns to Rachel, saying her first act as captain is to find a co-captain. In a montage, she's turned down by nearly everyone. She guns hard for Finn, and though he says no at first, she convinces him that he's a leader and must take a stand.  Rachel takes advantage of them being co-captains, pulling Finn in to rehearse so she can teach him how to smile. The pair get extra close while singing Lily Allen's "Smile."

In the locker room, Finn's fellow jocks hold him down and write on his face to practice for when he's in the glee yearbook picture. He decides to ditch Rachel during the photo shoot. She is now having a hard time keeping it together, or even bringing a smile to her face. After a pep talk, she's ready for her photo shoot, but the photographer gets in only a few shots before needing to leave for a commercial casting. Using the Rachel Berry charm, she gets herself and the club cast in the commercial.

So it's off to Mattress Land, where the glee club dons pajamas for their acting debut. "We here at Mattress Land believe that mattresses aren't just for sleeping and fornicating anymore. We believe that buying a mattress should be fun," says the store owner. Rachel expresses that the script in front of them is definitely not fun. They decide to sing Van Halen's "Jump" while hopping around the beds in the store.

While riffling through the drawers to find his pocket square for the yearbook photo, Will finds Terri's fake baby bump. Mrs. Schu tries to lie, but Will has completely lost it. "Pick up your shirt!" he demands. He finally sees that she's been faking it the whole time. She admits that she put on the charade because she thought she was losing him. "You've made yourself a stranger to me now. Are you happy? Are you satisfied?" he yells. She reveals that Quinn was going to give them her baby. Despite her pleading, he runs out of the house.

Will decides to sleep at school, which is easy seeing as there are plenty of mattresses stacked up in the rehearsal room. They're payment for the club's commercial. Unfortunately, Sue catches glee's commercial and reveals to Will and the principal that this is grounds for immediate disqualification from sectionals. It comes out that Will is thinking about leaving Terri. "I didn't see that one coming at all," says Sue sarcastically. That still doesn't change the fact that glee club is now officially over.

"Dear journal, I finally got Will Schuester and that glee club out of my hair. This is a day that will live in infamy. Once again, I won!" writes Sue in her diary. Quinn comes in, showing Sue that she still fits in her cheerios uniform, so she should be in the picture. Once denied, Quinn blackmails Sue with the information that the cheerios have been getting free gifts all along. She wants back on the squad and for glee to get a full-page spread in the yearbook. "You know Q, I've forgotten just how ruthless you are. You're like a young Sue Sylvester," Sue says. Quinn turns down her cheerio spot, opting to be in a club that actually wants to have her.

Thinking she's helping Will, Emma drops the big D word: Divorce. She assumed they were going to get one, but she understands what kind of decision that means for Will. Later, Will takes a bullet for the club, saying only he should be disqualified from sectionals since he "accepted" the mattress. Now the club is on their own. Will only asks that the club take their yearbook photo and smile as big as they can, even though he can't be in it with them.

Can they win without Mr. Schu? We won't know until next week! In the meantime, here are a few points to ponder:

*Will Finn discover that Quinn was part of Terri's master plan, effectively destroying Mr. Schu's marriage?

*Will Emma go through with the wedding now that Will may be a single man?

*Is it just me or did the promos for next week suggest that Rachel and Finn may be getting together?

*Will the glee club win sectionals?

See you all back here next week!
