A no-frills variety program broadcast live from Chicago was where Dave Garroway got his TV start before going on to become the first host of `Today.' Informed and always easy to take, Garroway made a name for himself by projecting a wittily off-the-cuff style. When he was tapped by NBC for its then-revolutionary morning series `Today,' `Garroway at Large' moved productions to New York and became `The Dave Garroway Show,' but left the air after one season.
