Jill gets mad at Rachel for trying to control her life, so she goes over to Ross's apartment to use him get back at Rachel. Later, when Ross tells Rachel that Jill kissed him, Rachel is furious. The gang is hanging out at the coffeehouse and they begin to discuss what their lives would be like if they had chosen a different path. When the show opens, we discover that Rachel is married Barry, Ross is still married to Carol, Monica never lost any weight, Phoebe works for Merrill Lynch, Chandler is an unsuccessful writer and Joey is still playing Dr. Drake Ramoray on 'Days of Our Lives.' Ross bumps into Rachel on the street having not seen her since high school, and he takes her to the coffeehouse to meet the gang. A fat Monica is shocked and excited to see her long lost high school friend, but Rachel is much more interested in the soap opera star, Joey Tribianni. Joey sees what a fan Rachel is of 'Days of Our Lives' and he invites her to visit the set while attempting to hit on her. Meanwhile, Chandler is an out of work writer and in order to make money he agrees to be Joey's personal assistant until his writing is published. Joey is so demanding that Chandler very quickly loses patience with him. Fortunately for Chandler, he sells a story to Archie comics and is able to quit his job. Phoebe's job at Merrill Lynch becomes increasingly stressful when she loses the company millions of dollars. The anxiety causes her to have a heart attack and sends her to the hospital for a few days. While there, Monica and Chandler learn that Phoebe has lost her job, but plan to keep the news from her. Monica reveals to Rachel that she has not lost her virginity and decides that her boyfriend, Dr. Roger is going to be 'the one'. She prepares a special dinner for him, with plenty of 'sensual' dishes, but their evening is cut short when Roger is paged by the hospital. Disappointed, Monica turns to her friend, Chandler for support. She realizes that she is much more comfortable with Chandler than Dr. Roger. Things become romantic between Monica and Chandler and they decide to sleep together. The next night, Monica has Dr. Roger over to the apartment and plans to sleep with him. Jealous because Monica is going to be with another man, Chandler gets rid of Dr. Roger by calling in a fake page from the hospital. Chandler and Monica realize that they want to be together. After almost having an affair with Joey, Rachel catches Barry in bed with another woman and leaves him. Phoebe learns that she has lost her job at Merrill Lynch and chooses a less stressful career, playing the guitar.

Ross shows the gang his joke that was published in Playboy magazine. When Chandler reads it, he claims the joke is his and Ross stole it from him. Since Playboy does not print the submitter's name, Chandler and Ross continue to fight over the joke, each claiming that they are the real author. Ross and Chandler leave it up to Monica to decide who wrote the joke by hearing each of their sides. When Monica tells them she doesn't understand why either of the would want credit for writing such a horrible joke, they begin to argue that the other wrote it. Joey has become increasingly strapped for cash since Janice moved out. Gunther offers him a job at the coffeehouse, but Joey is reluctant to take it because he would have to wait on his friends. He ultimately takes the job and attempts to hide it from the group. Meanwhile, the girls discuss which one they would want to date out of the three. Phoebe makes the mistake of picking Rachel because Monica is high maintenance and Rachel is more of a pushover. They take offense and try to get Phoebe back by calling her flaky.

As the Fall Season Begins, Will 4 Remain TV's Magic Number?

As the official 2014-2015 TV season kicks off on Monday, Sept. 22, we're about to find out whether TV's unofficial "Rule of 4" will strike again.

What's the "Rule of 4"? Quite simply, in the past few decades, years that ended in "4" have turned out to be game-changing seasons in network TV. In 1984, The Cosby Show premiered and immediately revived a moribund NBC, as well as the entire sitcom genre.

By 1994, NBC was struggling once again — until Friends and ER came along and made the Peacock Network an unstoppable force for the rest of the decade. By 2004, it was ABC on the ropes, until Lost and Desperate Housewives debuted and turned that network around.

Pilot Inspector: Befriending Friends Again, 20 Years Later

On Sept. 22, 1994, Friends premiered on NBC, and haircuts, coffeehouses, lobsters, trivia games, pivoting, Thanksgiving, pickup lines and break(-up) lines were never the same again. The sitcom phenom's cultural impact endures and its popularity remains unrivaled, but could we have foreseen all that by the time Chandler (Matthew Perry) shared his Liza Minnelli dream?

In honor of the series' 20th anniversary, Joyce Eng and Sadie Gennis decided to break out the pilot and look back at the one where it all began.

VIDEO: Friends Turns 20! The One Where Gunther Looks Back and Plays Trivia

Central Perk may not be Gunther's last name, but the two unquestionably go hand-in-hand.

So naturally, that's where we found James Michael Tyler, who played the surly, deadpan, Rachel-obsessed barista with "hair brighter than the sun" on Friends for all of its 10-year run. In honor of the series' 20th anniversary on Monday, Central Perk is real and — not to mix our must Must-See TV sitcoms — spectacular. Located at 199 Lafayette Street in New York City and open through Oct. 18, the pop-up coffeehouse is a must-stop shop for all Friends fanatics. The iconic orange couch is there for photo ops, there are tons of memorabilia, props (including Pat the Dog), souvenirs and free cups of coffee (courtesy of Eight O'Clock Coffee). Gunther himself will make surprise visits.

Premise: A classic sitcom that reflected the lives of six twentysomething friends: three men and three women, living in New York. Sometimes touching and often hilarious, it addressed universal themes like falling in---or out of---love, finding a job and dealing with (as well as becoming) parents, and inspired numerous friends-themed knockoffs, none of which conveyed the warmth and humor of the original. A spin-off, `Joey,' featuring Matt LeBlanc's character, was slated to debut in the fall of 2004.
