Ask Matt: The Office, Fall TV, Rizzoli, Big C, Torchwood and More!

James Spader

Question: Love your column, here is my question: With the exit of Steve Carell (and the last two to three seasons of The Office being very uneven), do you really think that adding James Spader to the cast will improve it? I re-watched the series from the beginning over this summer and one of the things that I noticed missing from the last few seasons is how the show went from a comedy about the office place to a comedy about characters in and outside of the office. While I like the actors, many of the characters (looking at you, Meredith) are now just caricatures; with Steve Carell leaving, I thought it would give the show a last chance to reboot, but hearing that James Spader joined the cast, my excitement has waned. Do you think that James Spader can help this show rekindle its former glory? — Larry S

A Day Out With Franklin & Bash

Breckin Meyer, Mark-Paul Gosselaar

Spending time in public with Franklin & Bash stars Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar can get a little surreal. (Picture an internal monologue that goes something like this: "Hold on. Is that Travis from Clueless and Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell... bowling together? Did the 13-year-old me dream this up?") Yet the bizarre-world pairing works on TNT's dramedy about two wisecracking, unconventional lawyer pals who court controversy at their new firm. During an afternoon at NYC's Lucky Strike Lanes, the duo made it clear... read more

Roush Review: Boys (Franklin & Bash) to Men (Of a Certain Age)

Mark-Paul Gosselar

You could get whiplash from the mixed messages being sent by TNT's first combo of the busy summer season.

In the new Franklin & Bash, an aggressively quirky buddy comedy-drama that feels like something excavated out of David E. Kelley's trunk of less inspired ideas, it's all about overgrown boys being boys, and no matter how annoying they get, we're supposed to find them lovable. It's being paired with the back half of the second season of the Peabody-winning Men of a Certain Age, a more mellow and bittersweet drama about the midlife crises of three best buds who've learned the hard way that growing up may not be the easiest thing, but in the long run it's worth it.

Premise: Two offbeat, young-gun street lawyers join a top-notch law firm in this buddy-legal drama. Jared Franklin and Peter Bash's brash, bad-boy antics shake up the buttoned-down firm, which is headed by eccentric boss Stanton Infeld, whose shifty nephew---a corporate-climbing lawyer at the firm---is none too pleased with Franklin and Bash's unconventional methods and sets out to take the pair down.
