DVD Pick of the Week: April 24, 2007

I'm extremely excited for April 24, because that's the day one of my most anticipated titles is released. No, it's not WKRP, which is plagued with music-licensing issues. It's the BBC release of Planet Earth. This 11-episode series explores our planet like no other series has done, from the North Pole to the South Pole, it's all covered in this program. They spent $25 million and 2,000 days in the field shooting material for the program, and they did it all using high-definition cameras. Narrated by the legendary David Attenborough (the Discovery Channel version is narrated by Sigourney Weaver), this series is being released on DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD, and all formats are among the top sellers on Amazon (as of now, DVD is No. 1, HD DVD No. 8 and Blu-ray No. 19 — their list is updated hourly). The DVD set also includes a bonus program, "Planet Earth: The Future," and 110 minutes of behind-the-scenes material that isn't available on the higher-priced Blu-ray and HD DVD releases.T...  read full article

I remember a show from the ...

Question: I remember a show from the early- to mid-'70s called Primus. It was sort of a Sea Hunt knockoff, but it got me into scuba diving. Can you tell me more about this show, such as who was in the cast and the years it aired?

Answer: That's why I'm here, Kevin. Actually, Primus, a syndicated show produced in 1971, was more than just a Sea Hunt knockoff — it was a younger sibling of sorts. Producer Ivan Tors, who created the series, was also behind Sea Hunt and Flipper.

Carter Primus (Robert Brown), the title character, was an adventurer who, aided by submersible robot Big Kate, mini-sub Pegasus and other sundry gadgets, earned his living under the sea. Pal Charlie (Will Kuluva) and assistant Toni (Eva read more

Premise: Viewers flipped for the megasmart dolphin that routinely helped his two young owners, Sandy and Bud, the sons of a widower living on the Florida shore (episodes were filmed in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas). Producer Ivan Tors, whose earlier credits included `Sea Hunt,' adapted the series from a 1963 film he worked on that made a splash, and later produced `Gentle Ben.' Flipper, by the way, was a male role filled by a female dolphin.
