FlashForward Episode Recap: "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" Season 1, Episode 17

The yellow brick road the title refers is not the same path Dorothy wandered down. It's actually an FBI training course and we open to Janis and Demetri struggling through the course.

We see Janis at a dark restaurant in her date-night best talking about the course and her new job at the FBI. The woman she's speaking with (attn X-Files fans, Annabeth Gish alert!) is Lita, a head hunter who finds talented people like Janis and offers them "opportunities." Janis laughs coyly and explains she's not looking to quit her new job just yet and Lita says she's just talking about "a little multi-tasking."

Back to present day, Mark is trying to gain answers from mysterious blueprints Dyson Frost left behind before he died. Mark is also determined to figure out what Dyson Frost meant when he said, "In the end, you'll be saved by the lady you see everyday." Also, Vogel is now set on getting Alda back into custody since murdering Dyson makes it clear she's been involved with the blackouts for at least some time.

As Olivia heads off to work for the day, she is shocked and scared to find Gabriel, the man who knew about the text, in her kitchen. He says he knows her and talks about how he was at the same Pixies concert as she was, the same wedding as she was, etc. He also says Olivia "made a mistake" and she is supposed to be with Lloyd. He tried to help her, but wasn't successful. "There's much I need to tell you," he says and alludes again to Raven River. As she runs out the door, he warns her to not buy coffee from the man that looks like Mr. Clean.

Olivia tells Mark about Gabriel just as she sees a car accident in front of the hospital. Underneath a flipped cab is the coffee guy who looks like Mr. Clean and Olivia, understandably, freaks out that what the crazy guy says is coming true.

In the present, Janis meets with her doctor, who tells her she's anemic and not gaining enough weight for the baby. Flashback to an unknown time, we see her wandering around very confused in a fish store. Her liaison with this new company she's working with behind the FBI's back is the owner of the fish store and the woman instructs Janis to simply be the best special FBI agent she can be and to win the trust of her co-workers while she keeps this woman apprised of what's going on.

Back to present day in the bureau, Frost's body is found with soil from Afghanistan. "What would he be doing in Afghanistan," Mark asks. Cut to Afghanistan, where Aaron is not blending in very well as he tries to get in touch with the right people to find his daughter.

Janis takes Dyson Frost's blueprints to an antiquities professor, and then to her handler at the fish store. The woman, Carline, instructs her to bring back the originals and destroy every copy. Janis goes that night to the university and steals the professor's copy back and wipes out the entire building's hard drive on her way out. The trickier part is Janis must break into Mark's office and steal his copy off the Mosaic board. Mark catches her, but Janis is able to talk her way out of it by explaining the professor lost his copy after she forgot to check the original copy into evidence.

Back at home, Olivia begins going through old pictures and finds Gabriel in the background of her photographs from both the concert and the wedding. Now that she knows Gabriel speaks the truth, Olivia goes to Agent Vreede to figure out what Raven River is. Turns out Raven River Psychiatric Hospital in Arizona, now closed for 20 years, once housed schizophrenic and autistic patients (possibly savants?).

In Afghanistan, Aaron is looking for Kahmir, the doctor who helped find Tracy and who Aaron believes will lead him back to his kidnapped daughter. Aaron and Malik go looking for the non-profit medical group Kahmir may work for.

Janis gets her first ultrasound and her doctor says she has a very real chance of losing the baby if she doesn't learn how to handle her stress. Mark calls her in the middle of her appointment and says Professor Cory is in his office with "interesting" information and he sounds very suspicious.

Lucky for her, when Janis gets back to the bureau nobody is suspicious and it turns out Professor Cory had taken digital images of the blueprints. He says it looks like they are meant to build some kind of mechanical astronomical clock engineered to read a series of dates, the first one being Oct. 6, 2009.

On the day of the blackout, we see Janis at the agency just like another day. When te blackout hits, she falls down the stairs and see herself pregnant and being asked if she wants to know the sex of her baby. When she wakes up, Janis throws up in the bathroom and cries knowing that whoever she is working for has something big to do with the blackout (especially since they talked about "the event" before). She tries to quit, but it's too late for that.

After Professor Cory's visit, Mark asks Janis why she's been distracted and Janis reveals she's pregnant. The two try to figure out what Dyson Frost meant by the lady and Mark remembers his love for chess. He breaks open the white queen piece he and Demetri had found earlier and finds a ring within the piece. Not just any ring, of course, but the ring Simon was wearing during the blackout that helped him stay conscious.

Malik is trying to take Aaron to find Kahmir, but they come across the only faction Malik doesn't know and he is shot, leaving Aaron on his own. Shooting and bombs break out, and just when it seems Aaron isn't going to make it, Kahmir runs to his side, telling him he has not been blending in as well as he thought he had.

As they look around the Raven River hospital, Olivia and Vreede find Gabriel. Gabriel explains that he saw Olivia and Lloyd kissing and was with the man who texted Olivia about Mark's flash-forward. Gabriel explains that Dyson Frost was his doctor when he was a patient at the hospital. All the patients used to sleep for long periods of time and when they woke up, they were forced to write down everything they saw. They were obviously writing down flash-forwards and after the experiment was done, Frost tried to have all the savants killed so they couldn't tell anyone but Gabriel got away.

Gabriel says he is now after Olivia because "it's an emergency." He says Olivia is going the wrong way and that in all the futures, she is with Lloyd but incorrectly recalls memories of Olivia at Harvard (when she would have lived right by Lloyd), but in real-life, she went to UCLA instead. She's a piece of the puzzle, Gabriel says. "They can't solve it without you."

Simon and Lloyd join the FBI team to examine what exactly the ring is.  After close examination, the ring turns out to be a QED (the same term Lloyd and Mark were talking about in their flash-forwards) which helps whoever is wearing the ring to stay in their current consciousness while everyone's consciousness is pushed forward to another day during the blackout. Mark realizes that on April 29, the people may raid his office not to kill him but to find the ring.

Flashback again to two years ago, Janis meets Vogel for the first time. He tells her he is a CIA agent and explains to her that she has been determined as one of the FBI's newest recruits most likely to be the target of hostile recruiting because of many factors including, money, sexuality, childhood, etc. Janis says she's would never betray her country, but Vogel says it would help to have a person on the inside close to such hostile groups because the CIA knows something is coming "that will make 9/11 look like a fender bender." She agrees to be a mole for the CIA.

Carline tells her Janis she must get the ring back, especially after failing to follow Mark to Frost and failing to get the blueprints. As she leaves, Janis gets one more order: to kill Benford.

So Janis isn't a mole after all! But she still was betraying the FBI by working with the CIA, no? And why has she been ordered to kill Mark? Plus, what else does Gabriel know? And how does Olivia fit into a puzzle? Why is she such an important piece pertaining to the blackout? Share your theories and thoughts below!
