FlashForward Episode Recap: "Believe" Season 1, Episode 9

This week's episode, entitled "Believe," appropriately gives viewers a better look into the back story of Bryce. Last week, we only saw him briefly but we do know he's on a serious quest to find the girl in his flashforward who he looks so happy to see on April 29, 2010. Nicole was able to decipher the tattoo on this mystery girl's wrist as "believe."

At the beginning of the episode, we see Bryce four weeks before the day of the blackout playing the patient rather than the doctor. The doc is talking to him about how treatments have failed and the prognosis is not good for his type of cancer, which is now in stage four. We later learn that Bryce is suffering from a terminal form of Renal Cell Carcinoma. Bryce is obviously frustrated that the treatment isn't working and once he leaves the hospital, he accidentally backs up into another car as he's leaving the parking garage. Rather than exchange insurance information or even open his mouth at all, Bryce simply continues to run into the vintage Thunderbird over and over and over, showing just how hopeless he feels at that moment. Two weeks after that day, we see Bryce in the middle of a surgery with Olivia. She asks him one important question about the patient's platelet count and he doesn't have the answer. She asks another question and he misses his cue again. After the surgery, Bryce apologies for his missteps but Olivia suggests he think long and hard about whether he's committed to his profession.

Finally, the day of the blackout, we see Bryce in therapy. He hasn't told any of his coworkers or his family members about his sickness and while his shrink is urging him to find support and enjoy life, we next see Bryce on the pier about to put a bullet in his head right before the blackout.

Besides getting a better look into Bryce's world, we also get a peak into the life of his mystery girl. We learn the girl, Keiko, earned a prestigious position at the top robotics firm in Japan. However, she also plays guitar as a hobby and loves old Bob Dylan songs, which explains the guitar on her shoulder in the flashforward.

In the present, Bryce is now learning Japanese but we also see him battling some illness. He comes into work pale and faint, which pushes him to finally confess his illness to Olivia. Bryce tells her he's known for a year and lost a kidney right before he started at the hospital.

Aaron is still dealing with the unexpected return of Tracy. He turned to Mark to help look into the Jerichoes Tracy thinks are out to get here. Mark isn't able to dig up much but does learn the group is headquartered at a think tank in local Santa Monica. After the phone call with Aaron, Mark also uncovers the text message someone sent Olivia saying he was drinking in his flash forward. He demands to know who sent the message but Olivia still has no idea.

Later at dinner, Aaron and Tracy grow more distant after Tracy knowingly drinks a glass of wine in front of Aaron. Aaron also takes out his frustration at Mark the next day when Mark confronts him by asking if he was the one to message Olivia, since Mark only told two people about his flashforward. Aaron storms out, but not before telling Mark to find a new sponsor.

Mark then goes to his other potential leak — Stanford — who is equally offended that Mark thinks he was the source of the text. Things get even more crazed at the bureau when a rep from the National Security Agency informs the Mosaic group that one agent has been red flagged. The agent elaborates that it is Demetri who has been red flagged and because of the mysterious phone call he received saying he would be murdered in March. Demetri gets the recorded phone call intel from the NSA.

Before we can learn what intel Mark can get from the call, we reach back to Bryce's flashforward. After a frustrating day at work, Keiko goes in to get her believe tattoo while Olivia gets Bryce into an experimental treatment program for his cancer in Dallas. Bryce is worried about the side effects affecting his chance of living his flashforward but Olivia is persistent and Bryce takes a break — to Japan. In Japan, Bryce seeks out the sushi restaurant whose logo Keiko wears in his flashforward and learns his dream girl's name. However, Keiko has since been kicked out of her house after quitting her job at the robotics firm and when Bryce comes to the door looking for her; Keiko's mother slams the door in his face. Bryce vents to Nicole, who it seems may be developing a little bit of a crush, and urges him to come home to Los Angeles.

Back in Los Angeles, Demetri and Mark put together travel plans of their own once they learn the woman on the other end of Demetri's ominous phone call was calling from Hong Kong. Stanford turns down their travel proposal but Mark insists that they go anyway, you know, since he and Stanford are already on such great terms at this point.

Mark later apologizes to Aaron. Aaron accepts but laments about Tracy, who he says has changed forever to a scared, alcoholic, all because of him.

In the final moments of the episode, Bryce flies back to Los Angeles but not far behind is — yes! — Keiko with her hair finally let down and her guitar on her shoulder. According to Keiko's flashforward, it turns out the restaurant where they meet in their flashforward is in Los Angeles and not Japan. And commence more Bob Dylan music...

So what did you think of Bryce's back story? What about Keiko? Who will Mark piss off next? When will him and Demetri head to Hong Kong? Oh yeah, and what the heck happened to Simon and Lloyd?! Sound off in the comments!

Premise: The world's population sees into the future when everyone blacks out for two minutes and 17 seconds at the same time. The clairvoyant episode staggers the minds of all, as in many instances their futures are not what they expected---and some, it seems, have no future at all. While many recount their experiences on a worldwide Web site, others seek to circumvent their fates; and some, like FBI agent Mark Benford, seek to learn what caused the mass blackout.
