Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria
When Eva Longoria arrived at ABC's winter press-tour party at the Wind Tunnel in Pasadena, Calif., TVGuide.com cozied up to the Desperate Housewives star, who was more than happy to speak on a variety of topics, including the casting of her TV mom, her romance with San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker and, yes, that much-publicized Vanity Fair cover shoot.
First up: "I'm thrilled," the brunette beauty enthuses of Chasing Papi's Maria Conchita Alonso being hired as her Housewives mami, first appearing in the Feb. 19 episode. "We're going to learn [through Lucia] why Gaby is the way that she is."

Bryan Cranston and Frankie Muniz, Malcolm in the Middle
Friday, Jan. 13, turned out to be a truly bad-luck day for Malcolm in the Middle. That's when the cast members learned that the Fox sitcom, now in its seventh season, had gotten the ax.
"There was some sadness," Bryan Cranston, aka Malcolm's bumbling dad, Hal, tells TVGuide.com, adding that he and his TV wife, Jane Kaczmarek, shared an embrace and a few tears upon learning their fate. "We realized it's about how much fun you have along the way," philosophizes the actor, who felt that Malcolm could have easily gone on creatively for another year. "But I can't complain. We'll have done 151 episodes. It's been fantastic. It's going to be good

24"Relax, he's really good at this." You said it, Chloe. Jack's back, and all is wrong with the world once again — which means my prime time's finally got the jaw-dropping, plot-twisting, rock-'em-sock-'em roller-coaster ride it's been missing since May. (Sorry, Idol. I've missed you, too, but deep down you've always known you're just my midweek diversion until that next hour starts ticking away.) Let's sum up, shall we? Former president Palmer? Dead. (I know!) Michelle Dessler? Dead. Tony Almeida? Critical condition. Chloe O'Brian? Still the coolest cranky-pants techie around. Palmer's brother Wayne? Grieving, willing to help Jack, and hot-hot-hot as ever. (Helloooo, D.B. Woodside!) First Lady Martha Logan? Nuttier than a fruitcake. President Logan? Complet

Question: I need dirt on Veronica Mars! This hiatus is killing me!
Answer: Well, given the speed with which news travels in this town, you may have already heard that late last week I got confirmation that my much-hyped-by-me Mars guest appearance is a definite go. I'm due on the show's San Diego set at 8:30 am this Friday. (Stalker Alert: I'll be heading south on the 405 freeway from 6:30 to 8:30 am Friday. Wave if you see me.) And the best part? I have an actual role, not some measly extra thing. Here's the sitch: From what I understand, Veronica will be throwing a bachelorette party for a friend and I will be one of the few men in attendance. And something happens at the party between Veronica and myself that is so snot-shootingly funny I have to hold off on telling you for fear that I'll jinx it. After all, we don't want a repeat of that disastrous Felicity incident of yore.

Desperate HousewivesBest plot tonight was the Tom and Lynette story where she wanted him to get a vasectomy after he told her he'd want to possibly have a new family if she died unexpectedly. I was so glad he decided against it. The whole episode was just another opportunity for Doug Savant to shine. That part at the end when he admitted to being unhappy — wow. Chills. Worst plot was the whole Gabrielle-having-posed-for-nude-photos-when-she-was-younger story. Like any husband would remain calm and not care whether the photos were destroyed. Like any wife would disrobe in front of the gardeners. Like any photographer would give back the photos and negatives without asking for money. But worst of all, Carlos pushing the photographer through the glass door after he said Gabi wasn't "Internet pretty"? Yeah, right. At least the other story lines kicked butt. I loved that i

Question: Please, no 7th Heaven spin-off with Lucy and Kevin. That sounds like 7th Heaven: The Next Generation. The most interesting concept for a spin-off would be one that follows Martin as he tries to break in to the big leagues. They could spin it in the direction of Felicity and make the show about Martin trying to make it on his own and discover who he is while avoiding the temptation of steroids and being a dutiful father to his child. Eventually his baseball career would go bust and he could study sports journalism at Simon's school.
Answer: You know, this is the first good idea I've heard regarding life after 7th Heaven. It goes the Frasier route in taking a character who was important to the parent show (in that case, Cheers) but not from the core original cast and telling a completely different story, though with the same basic values. Only problem here is that series with sports themes have had a terrible time of it, the horrific One Tree Hill notwithstanding. But Martin

Question: In your Jan. 9 posting, Christine asked why roughly five million people who watch Desperate Housewives do not watch Grey's Anatomy. You presented one logical explanation, that some people do not watch past 10 pm/ET due to work the next day. Then you seem perplexed by the rest of us who like to stay with Housewives but not with Grey's Anatomy. To start out with, I would consider myself a connoisseur of television. I say this so that you won't consider me a simple dolt who just watches action and procedural shows. I love good writing, chemistry between the actors, intelligent interactions, interesting background. But to me, it's simple. I do not like shows with a straight-out "soap opera" formula (their main focus is how many people they can get their characters involved with in varying situations) like ER, Grey's Anatomy, Beverly Hills, 90210 and Gilmore Girls, etc. I admit that I watched the first few shows of Anatomy, ER and L.A. Law but soon grew bored by the soap-opera ...

Question: In light of the recent news of Alias' impending cancellation, I was wondering how you feel the show will be written about in future television-history books. For me, Alias was love at first sight and I have been a loyal follower since the days of double agency and SD-6. While the show has had a glitch creatively in recent years (and I think you would agree), it is still safe to say that Alias is one of my all-time great TV love affairs, if for nothing else than the first two seasons alone. I will be a devoted viewer until the very end.
Answer: I'm with it from start to finish as well, out of loyalty if nothing else, but here's an idea: Let's start referring to Alias' departure as a "retirement," not a "cancellation," OK? Five years is more than most cult shows get, especially on a major network. The fact that the producers are getting the opportunity to plot out an actual series finale is something to celebrate, not mourn. But to address the larger issue: When we look back on
