Michael Landon created this warm family drama about an 1870s frontiersman who poses as a priest to care for a group of orphans whose parents were killed when their mining town was destroyed. To keep the children from ending up in a workhouse, `Father' Murphy ran an orphanage called Gold Hill School with the help of local teacher Mae. The two eventually married and adopted all the orphans.
