Father Knows Best Season 1 — Review

Father's Day may still be a couple months away, but you don't have to wait to show your appreciation for one of the greatest TV dads of all time. Jim Anderson (Robert Young) and the rest of the premier sitcom family have made their way to DVD with the release of the four-disc set of Father Knows Best's complete first season from Shout Factory. In addition to the season's 24 episodes, the set includes "24 Hours in Tyrantland," a previously unaired episode created for the U.S. government as well as the pilot to Robert Young's next project, Window on Main Street. The set also includes new cast interviews, behind-the-scenes color footage and a collection of Young's home movies. However, to many die-hard fans chagrin, many episodes in the set are the 22-minute versions created for syndication rather than the original 26-minute cuts. Shout Factory might not know best in that regard, but it's still great to finally have this TV classic on DVD. — Adam Bryant read more

Premise: Perhaps the quintessentially comforting '50s sitcom, about the Anderson family---rock-steady Jim, sensible wife Margaret, and their kids Betty, Bud and Kathy---in the Midwestern town of Springfield. The series was adapted from a radio program, also starring Robert Young, that began in 1949. When CBS canceled the show in 1955, fan protests led to NBC picking it up and nurturing it into a hit. In fact, repeats aired in prime time for three years after the production of its last original episode.
