Investigation Links Reality Shows, Suicide

Najai Turpin

Is there a link between reality shows and suicide?

An investigation by TheWrap, an entertainment website, found that 11 people have killed themselves "in tragedies that appear to be linked to their experience on television shows." read more

Ratings: Hell's Kitchen Still Cooking with Gas

Monday's few ratings highlights:• A Hell's Kitchen leftover (3.95 million total viewers) bested an Age of Love repeat (3.6 mil) to oh-so-proudly lay claim to third place in the reruns-filled 8 o'clock hour.• At 9, a fresh Hell's Kitchen drew 7.88 mil, enjoying a week-to-week surge of 660,000. A new Age (4.75 mil), meanwhile, broke up with 700K more viewers. Holy crap, the "kittens" are boring.• Extreme Makeover returned to a hair (plug) over six million viewers, a 2.5 mil improvement over time-slot predecessor Ex-Wives Club. read more

Extreme Makeover's Garth Fisher Marries

Extreme Makover’s first plastic surgeon Garth Fisher and former Playboy model Jessica Canseco wed on June 23 in their Bel-Air home. The flower girls were Fisher’s two daughters from his previous marriage — Neriah, 7, and Sierra, 5 — and Canseco’s daughter Josie, 10. Fisher popped the question at a 2006 holiday party thrown by Dr. 90210 plastic surgeon Paul Nassif, who introduced the couple. During the summer run of Makeover, Fisher will be featured on the July 9 episode. — Reporting by Dani Dornfeld read more

ABC Nips Makeover, Plans Lost's Return

A flurry of scheduling announcements from the Alphabet network:• After one ridiculously low-rated week back on the air, Extreme Makeover "people edition" has been pulled, to be replaced on Fridays at 8 by Grey's Anatomy repeats. (Speaking of extreme makeovers, check out my Nip/Tuck contribution to the Ausiello Report appearing in the Nov. 5 TV Guide.)• February 7 has been confirmed as the return date for Lost, which goes on hiatus after the Nov. 8 episode to free up the time slot for Taye Diggs' Day Break (which I started watching last night and it is, like, wowee-zowee good).• Boston Legal returns to its original Sunday-at-10 time slot on Nov. 26 for a special airing of the first of a two-part episode, to conclude on Nov. 28. read more

I have watched all the ...

Question: I have watched all the episodes of Ugly Betty so far, and I really enjoy the show on many levels. I love (and hate) that "poor Betty" moment that seems to occur at least once per episode (you know, when some wafer-thin coworker attempts to humiliate her at a staff meeting or some such). The only problem I have with the show, honestly, is that as believable as Betty is in terms of her disposition and courage, she is utterly unbelievable to me in terms of her looks. A woman (whether she's raised in Queens, the rural Midwest or Seattle) who wants to work at the most successful fashion magazine in America would presumably have some minor interest in fashion and/or personal beauty. I just have a hard time buying the idea that Betty, who is by no means ugly, would have no interest in or ability to present herself with a certain amount of style and grace. If she has no interest in fashion, why is she working at such a prestigious publication? And if she does have an interest in ... read more

I know it's still summer, but ...

Question: I know it's still summer, but have the networks announced tentative dates for their season premieres? Answer: As of now, the only network not to announce premiere dates is CBS, which will likely launch most of its new and returning shows the weeks of Sept. 17 and 24. Here's how the others shape up: The season kicks off early on Fox, with Prison Break and Vanished on Aug. 21; then the limited reality series Duets on Aug. 29; Justice and Bones on Aug. 30; House and Standoff on Sept. 5; the comedies 'Til Death and Happy Hour on Sept 7; Nanny 911 on Sept. 8; Cops and America's Most Wanted on Sept. 9; Fox's animated comedy lineup plus The War at Home on Sept. 10; and MADtv Sept. 16. (The O.C. won't return until after postseason baseball on Nov. 2.) On ABC, 20/20 officially kicks off Sept. 8; Dancing with the Stars returns Sept. 12 and 13; Wife Swap premieres Sept. 18; Grey's Anatomy and Six Degrees on Sept. 21; Ugly Betty and Men in Trees on Sept. 22; Extreme Makeover: Home read more

What do you think of the ...

Anthony LaPaglia and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Without a Trace

Question: What do you think of the networks' new Sunday lineups? First, I think NBC will undoubtedly improve thanks to Sunday Night Football, but not so dramatically that it will beat ABC or CBS. I seem to remember that Monday Night Football on ABC constantly took a backseat to CBS and declined in the ratings for several seasons. I've heard many analysts claim CBS will give ABC a run for its money on Sundays, but I don't see that happening, either. CBS will now have Without a Trace to fall back on, but Trace is lacking a CSI lead-in, and it was down 10 percent in the 18-to-49 demo this past season. That, coupled with a weaker lead-in from Cold Case, will result in big declines for Without a Trace. I also think CBS made a grave error in placing The Amazing Race at 8 pm/ET. This past season Race was down by double-digit proportions, and I highly doubt it will now find an audience against Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Sunday Night Football. The Amazing Race isn't the hit that CBS ... read more

How Idol's Elliott Won... Our Hearts

American Idol's Elliott Yamin

There was a time when no one wanted to hear Elliott Yamin sing. "I was always loud, interrupting my mom on the phone or my brother doing his homework," the 27-year-old Virginian recalls with a laugh. "I would annoy everybody." Today, it's a different story. Yamin may have come in third on American Idol, but he endeared himself to millions during its record-breaking fifth run. (As of May 30, an AOL poll placed him fifth on its "Best Idol of All Time" list. Winner Taylor Hicks tied for third; runner-up read more

Extreme Makeover: One Home's Update

The Teas family and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition's Ty Pennington (Inset)

More than 16 million people watched Cyndy Teas and her family on TV last fall, and she still gets phone calls, e-mails and donations from inspired viewers. But it was a simple meal of chicken enchiladas in her new kitchen last winter that made Cyndy realize that ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is, in her words, "more than a show. It changed our outlook on life."

As you may recall, the Teas family was the focus of a two-hour Makeover special last October (reairing this Sunday at 7 pm/ET), which showcased a total face-lift of Camp Barnabas, the Purdy, Mississippi, retreat the family runs for scores of young people with severe disabilities. The remodel, including a three-bedroom home, a bunkhouse and a TV Guide-themed media center, was chronicled i read more
