A frustrated wannabe actor continually lands bit parts on major film projects with real stars (who play themselves). Fortysomething Englishman Andy Millman was bitten by the acting bug late in life, but can't seem to make a name for himself, despite his best efforts to steal a line, milk a scene or schmooze with the crew. His best friend, Maggie, suffers a similar fate, though she would much rather catch a man than a break. Created by the duo that crafted the BBC's `The Office.'

  • Cheers: Dexter's Killer Finale | Cheers & Jeers | 12/17/2007
Cheers to Dexter for finishing its second season with a flourish. Michael C. Hall's "Bay Harbor Butcher" lived to slay another day after his crazy ex-lover Lila murdered his pursuer Sgt. Doakes — making it morally justifiable for Dex to off her. (I love a happy ending.) The skillfully executed episode capped a stellar year for Showtime, which just saw the Golden Globes recognize several of its series (although, sadly, not its best, Brotherhood). Want proof Showtime is the new HBO? Dexter's... read more be the first to leave a comment

  • When Emmy Winners Attack! | Today's News: Our Take | 9/26/2007
OK, first off, how freakin’ hilarious was The Bachelor Monday night? Holy human desperation, I loved it! And Hillary from my hometown made the first cut. Represent, Philly ‘ho!Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk last week’s Emmys. Yes, the in-the-round stage was a hot circular mess and why so many statues went to TV-movies, I’ll never know. It’s not like any of the good Sci Fi Originals get nominated. Hello, Mansquito? So robbed. But Seacrest... read more be the first to leave a comment

July 10th is a day many of you have been waiting for, not because there's a set you're dying to buy, but because it's a slow release day. That's right, July 10th is the slowest day you'll find for a very, very long time.Beauty and the Beast, one of the top shows on TVShowsOnDVD.com, has its second season released, and this time there are extras! • Friday Night Lights on Emmy Short List? | Matt Roush | 7/2/2007
Well, this is good news to come home to. (Thanks, by the way, to all the well-wishers who e-mailed gracious greetings during my time off. Can't recommend Paris highly enough, even during an unseasonably chilly rainy spell.)If the reporting on TheEnvelope.com site is accurate, the top-10 drama finalists at this intermediate stage of the Emmy nominations includes eternal NBC underdog Friday Night Lights—which could use some good news, seeing as how NBC yanked its summer repeats for now.... read more be the first to leave a comment

  • It's a Wrap: Ricky Gervais Ends HBO's Extras | Today's News: Our Take | 3/20/2007
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have elected not to do a third season of Extras, and instead will wrap up the HBO series with a "one-off" special, as they did before with the U.K. edition of The Office, says the Hollywood Reporter. Explaining that the idea to end the run was in its very early stages, a rep for the duo says no timetable is in place for the series ender, but that Gervais and Merchant "will, at some point, sit down... and write it." Oooh, I love how mysterious and exotic the... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Ah, Walnuts! Sopranos Delayed Again | Today's News: Our Take | 12/14/2006
Don't fret, James Gandolfini's knees are fine. (This time.) Evoking that Saturday Night Live bit where Sopranos cast members couldn't recall where they left off/who hated who, HBO now is promoting an April 2007 return for the crime drama — a month later than last expected. Per the New York Daily News, HBO will ramp up to the final season by encoring the last round, starting Jan. 15 — a day after new seasons of Rome and Extras debut. read more be the first to leave a comment
  • I saw a promo on HBO last ... | Matt Roush | 8/11/2006
Question: I saw a promo on HBO last night, and it looks like they're planning to move their movie night to Sunday. Any idea why? What about those great original shows? What will happen to them? Answer: There are couple of reasons for this temporary shift — which HBO says will only continue through the end of the year, when movie premieres will return to Saturdays, and multiple series, including Rome, will begin on Sundays starting Jan. 7. First off, though HBO would never admit it, the pay... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • Maybe I missed it, but I ... | Matt Roush | 10/28/2005
Question: Maybe I missed it, but I don't see anyone talking about the absolute best comedy on TV at the moment. The show Extras consistently makes me laugh out loud and is thoroughly enjoyable overall. Matt, have you had a chance to take in this hidden gem on HBO, which has received hardly any promotion? If so, what are your thoughts? Answer: I reviewed it quite positively when it premiered in late September, and now having watched the last few episodes — as with The Office, Ricky Gervais... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • I've really been enjoying ... | Matt Roush | 10/10/2005
Question: I've really been enjoying Extras, but it seems like I never hear anything about the show. Why has HBO put so little effort into promoting it? Do you think it's because it's not their own production? Or because there aren't that many episodes? I saw ads for Unscripted and The Comeback all over the place and neither of those shows was nearly as good as this one. Whenever a network attempts to remake a British show, there are always scores of people complaining because they don't just... read more be the first to leave a comment
