This sets off a series of harsh family crises, between Edna and Dr. Abbott, Rose and Edna and--perhaps most damaging, Dr. Abbott and Rose, who asserts herself for the first time in her turbulent marriage. Amy opts to remain at her grandparents' house, but she soon discovers that she cannot evade adult responsibility. Meanwhile, with Delia furious at him for dating Linda (recurring guest star Marcia Cross), Dr. Brown tries desperately to reconcile with his daughter and find out what's bothering her--but a father/daughter camping trip may not be the best idea. And Dr. Brown copes with a woman who wants to get pregnant using the frozen sperm of her dead husband, despite the objections of her current husband.

Amy finally becomes so exasperated that she runs away from home.

Another, Daniel Sullivan (Beau Bridges - "The Second Civil War"), lives next door to Dr. Abbott, who has attempted to thwart Sullivan's outrageous building plans. And the third victim is Ellie Beels (Kirsten Nelson - "The West Wing"), who has been trying to conceive a baby. Dr. Brown, Dr. Abbott and Linda utilize their special skills under terrible conditions, but it is Dr. Brown who must confront his biggest fears in order to save lives.

Linda encounters major resistance from Dr. Abbott when she announces her decision to join his practice. Meanwhile, Dr. Brown learns that some local adolescents may be practicing unsafe sex, and he is shocked at their parents' reaction to the situation. Also, Bright asks Ephram to watch over Amy, whose odd behavior has everyone worried.

Plainspoken Edna Harper (series star Debra Mooney) serves as Dr. Brown's nurse and office manager, despite being the mother of the only other doctor in town, irascible Dr. Harold Abbott, whose children, 16-year-old Amy (series star Emily VanCamp) and 18-year-old Bright (series star Chris Pratt), have become friends with Dr. Brown's at school. Dr. Brown has also found his neighbor, Nina Feeney (series star Stephanie Niznik), to be a reliable confidante. And the school bus driver, Mr. Irv Harper (series star John Beasley), keeps watch over it all.
