"Models, models and more models." That was pretty much the theme of tonight's episode. For Vincent Chase, even unemployment is interesting and filled with possibility. Shauna capitalized on Vince's best assets and landed him a tidy modeling pay day that required him to pose with gorgeous, underwear-clad models and do little else. It sounded like the perfect gig for our favorite, under-employed, work ethic-challenged actor. Unfortunately, Vince's chemistry with his co-star Natasha did not sit well with her boss, marketing guru Freddy (Jason Isaacs), who promptly fired her and brought in a replacement. (I laughed at Shauna's comparison of models to cockroaches: "Stamp one out and fifty lookalikes show up in their place.") A smitten Vince got an attack of scruples and went directly to Freddy to plead her case, but it turned out to be Vince, and not his co-star, that had actually caught Freddy's eye.
Things definitely took an interesting turn for Ari tonight as Alan's funeral turned into a major career opportunity (Ari's final words to Alan were classic: "I hate myself for the fact that even today, I still don't like you.") The timing of the job offer could not have been better as Ari was overwhelmed by reality-television writers, a suspicious Lloyd and a visit from an over-zealous Jeffrey Tambor trying to make the leap into features. ("I don't wanna do anymore TV. That's Satan's work.") By the way, were there any other Larry Sanders fans out there who enjoyed this little mini-reunion? Hey now!
Eric's petite stature provided several punch lines as he fought off the heavy-handed advances of a statuesque model; Drama and Turtle just hung around hoping that some of the good fortune would rub off on them - literally. My favorite scene came just at the end with Ari opening up to Vince about his offer to take over Alan's job. I was surprised by Vince's tentative reaction ("I'd like to finish what we started,") and noted to myself that Jeremy Piven and Adrian Grenier did some of the best acting that we've seen on this show. (Of course, I think Jeremy Piven could add wit and depth to a recitation of the phone book, but it was really Adrian Grenier that surprised me.) That one short exchange spoke volumes about Vince and Ari's relationship and definitely set the stage for some interesting twists to come.
