John Schneider on Dukes, Smallville and His New Friend

John Schneider, You've Got a Friend

John Schneider has gone from playing a good ol' boy on the enduring 1979-85 hit Dukes of Hazzard, to more fatherly roles like Clark Kent's dad on Smallville, to serving as the role model to a 12-year-old orphan in Hallmark Channel's You've Got a Friend (premiering Saturday at 9 pm/ET). He spoke to us about his journey. TV Guide: Tell us about You've Got a Friend.Schneider: It's a fantastic movie to sit and watch with your whole family, which is very important to me these days — there seems to be less and less of that out there. It's a great story about the importance of big-brother relationships and fathers. I [think] it's really importan read more

Cincinnati Won't Put Up with Dukes

The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra has scrapped a Dukes of Hazzard-themed July show featuring drop-bys from John Schneider and Tom Wopat, because some community members find the classic TV series — which costars a Confederate-flag-emblazoned car — racist and offensive. "It's a huge shock to me that in this day and age, people could be so narrow-minded," Schneider tells the Associated Press, adding that those in charge should examine "their knee-jerk reactions to someone else's prejudice and bigotry." The Pops, which consulted with a head-shaking NAACP, says in a statement, "We decided that some of the messages conveyed in the program are not consistent with [our] efforts to reach out to all [people]." Besides, they thought they'd be getting Jessica in a bikini. read more

Hills' Angel, Lauren Conrad, Tells All!

Lauren "LC" Conrad, The Hills

When Lauren Conrad, star of MTV's Laguna Beach spin-off The Hills (Wednesdays at 10 pm/ET), dropped by the TV Guide offices on Monday, the questions came fast and plenty, as staffers sought out the scoop on her reality series. What's the deal with Heidi? What's happening with Jason? And what's the 411 on the LC-Kristin rivalry? Although Lauren seemed to have heard this particular reporter's comment on her resemblance to big-screen funny girl read more

Ausiello keeps talking about ...

Kiefer Sutherland, 24

Question: Ausiello keeps talking about a film version of 24. Am I the only person who thinks making a 24 movie is, well, a total oxymoron on a level with "military intelligence" and "sugar-free caramel?" The real-time format is the show's trademark, even if some stretching has to happen to make everything fit without people getting stuck in L.A. traffic. In general, I don't think many shows, especially those still on the air, would make a good translation to the big screen. (I'm ignoring remakes like the recent Dukes of Hazzard.) To me, the best TV shows are about the development of characters and their relationships over time. 24 is more action-oriented than that, but wouldn't making a movie just be a grab at more money and exposure, as opposed to a real organic evolution of the show? (The X-Files movie was especially superfluous, since it wasn't even a stand-alone story. Maybe I'm just a medium purist, but it should just have been a two- or three-episode story arc. Not to say I ... read more

It seems like every other ...

Question: It seems like every other movie I see advertised is based on a TV show, like The Dukes of Hazzard. But what about the other way around? I know there was a series based on My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but what other TV series have been based on a movie, and were any of them good?

Answer: There have been a handful of top-notch TV shows based on movies. The flop Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) was revived as Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003); Robert Altman's acerbic M*A*S*H* (1970) became the long-running M*A*S*H (1972-1983); Neil Simon read more

WHO WANTS CHIPS?

Warner Bros. Pictures, having already delivered Starsky & Hutch and The Dukes of Hazzard to the big screen, will next bring moviegoers a feature version of that '70s show CHiPs — appropriately tapping That '70s Show's Wilmer Valderrama to fill Erik Estrada's distinctively snug motorcycle cop pants. Somewhere, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Mario Lopez are sobbing. read more

I just saw Lynda Carter from ...

She's a beauty: Lynda Carter

Question: I just saw Lynda Carter from the old TV show Wonder Woman in both Sky High and The Dukes of Hazzard (don't ask why I saw both those movies!) and my friend and I got to arguing about whether or not she was really Miss USA in the '70s? He says no, but I'm sure I've read that she was. Or maybe she just made it up to make herself stand out — can you clear it up?

Answer: I don't know where the blame lies for the confusion about Lynda Carter's pageant career, but I think a combination of careless reporting and lack of information about the finer points of pageantry are more likely culprits than out-and-out deception on Carter's part. First, the facts: Carter did win the Miss World USA pageant in 1972, having previously won t read more

Did John Schneider and Tom ...

We are family: Dukes stars Schneider, Bach and Wopat

Question: Did John Schneider and Tom Wopat play Bo and Luke Duke the whole time The Dukes of Hazzard was on? I seem to remember other actors playing the roles, too. Thank you.

Answer: Not quite, Beth, though your memory of substitute stars is halfway there.

Schneider (Smallville) and Wopat played the Charger-drivin' Duke boys from the time CBS launched the show in January 1979 until the spring of 1982, when they bailed out after battling with the suits over merchandising money the actors said they were owed. Now before you go thinking they were just a couple of demanding, whiney stars, be aware there was serious money involved.

"[W]e picked up the newspaper and read that [Dukes producer] Warner Communications' annual financial report stated that the company had earned $190 million in 1981 from its read more

Premise: The Robin Hood-style escapades of two cousins at odds with a greedy, bombastic politician and his blundering lackey, the local sheriff. `Just good ol' boys, never meanin' no harm,' Bo and Luke Duke kept one step ahead of trouble in a souped-up car called the General Lee while their comely cousin and sage uncle provided support. The series' success revived interest in rural-themed shows and helped propel Waylon Jennings' title song to the top of the country charts in 1980.
