Joss Whedon Builds a New Dollhouse Premiere | Today's News: Our Take | 7/22/2008
Joss Whedon is going back to the drawing board with the season premiere of his new series, Dollhouse. Whedon says he's making a second first episode of the series a redux that has more "pop" and pulls viewers in and that bumps the original premiere to become the second eppy. "I think I can hit this nail on the head a little more solidly," he told TV Barn, to invite viewers into what he told Matt Mitovich is a "complicated" show. He explained on Whedonesque.com, "There were a few...

Fall TV Press Tour: 24, Fringe, Truth Talk & More | Today's News: Our Take | 7/14/2008
Matt and Mickey here at the TCA press tour. Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly has taken the stage to field questions. First discussing Fringe, Reilly says that Fox was hot to work with J.J. Abrams, and thus offered him a series "on Day 1." Pegging Fringe as "X-Files meets Indiana Jones," Reilly says, "Sometimes with these big show runners, it's all hype and no delivery.... This one is going to bring the goods." Reilly reiterates that which has been said before and by others:...

Joss Whedon's Scary Trip to the Woods | Movie News | 7/9/2008
MGM has green-lit a new thriller written by Buffy, Angel and Dollhouse creator Joss Whedon titled The Cabin in the Woods. It was co-written and will be directed by Cloverfield scribe Drew Goddard. Whedon and Goddard worked together on Buffy and Angel. Of course, the plot is under wraps, but judging from their collective sci-fi/horror pedigrees, I'm guessing this won't be a relaxing trip to the titular cabin. Are you excited to see a thriller from the minds behind Cloverfield and Dollhouse?...

Exclusive: First Look at Joss Whedon's "Dr. Horrible" | Roush Dispatch | 6/30/2008
Two of my favorite things in all of show business— musical comedy and Joss Whedon — combine in the funniest, freshest TV special of the summer, which happens to be available only on your computer starting in mid-July.I had the great good fortune late last week to get a sneak peek at all 42 minutes of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Whedon's stylishly scrappy, lovably cheesy and insanely tuneful return to the form for which he showed such incredible aptitude in the classic "Once...

Fringe Benefits: Fox Reaps Bigger Bucks for Reduced-commercial Shows | Today's News: Our Take | 6/5/2008
Fox is collecting 30 to 40 percent higher ad rates for commercials airing during Fringe (premiering Sept. 9) and Dollhouse (coming in January), the two series it has earmarked as "Remote-Free TV" and as such will feature only half the typical hourly volume of commercials and promos. All told, Fox this past season's No. 1 network in total viewers has sold 70 percent of its upfront prime-time inventory and could be sold out by week's end, says Media Week.Though many media execs have...

Upfront Day 4: A Spot-On Move By Fox | The Biz | 5/16/2008
We've been hearing a lot of industry whining lately about how technology is ravaging the traditional TV business model. Starting next season, Fox will actually try to do something about it. One reason viewers love watching their favorite shows on digital video recorders is because they can skip through commercials. And who can blame them? Network ad and promo time has been creeping up for years. So next season, Fox will designate two of its new drama series as "Remote-Free TV" which will carry...

Fox's Fringe, Dollhouse to Run with Half the Ads | Today's News: Our Take | 5/15/2008
Fox entertainment chairman Peter Liguori at Thursday's upfronts presentation unveiled a "Remote-Free TV" initiative, under which Fox will launch its two new dramas J.J. Abrams' Fringe (premiering in late August) and Joss Whedon's Dollhouse (debuting midseason) with half the commercial and promo time of a typical series. That adds up to no more than about five minutes of national ad loads per hour, and this applies to every episode. In the wake of increased competition from cable,...

Fall TV: Fox Gives J.J. Abrams Appointment After House | Today's News: Our Take | 5/15/2008
For those who've been keeping an ear to the tracks, Fox's fall plan didn't shake out exactly as expected. Perhaps waylaid by CBS' decision to program Wednesday's 8 o'clock hour with comedies, Fox has opted to counterprogram with Bones. Leading out of House on Tuesdays at 9 is Lost creator J.J. Abrams' much-anticipated Fringe. On Monday, Terminator and Prison Break have swapped places, with Sarah Connor now opening the night. Wednesday's 9 o'clock hour features 'Til Death and the new comedy Do...

Ask Ausiello | 5/7/2008
Q: I'm glad Katee Sackhoff didn't get the role on CSI. She's too good for that show. Where will Starbuck go next? Joss Whedon's Dollhouse? A: All the major Dollhouse roles have been cast, so I doubt there's a place for her there. At the Sexiest Stars party, Katee would only let on that she's been reading pilot scripts in search of a post-BSG project, although she acknowledged that Starbuck will be a tough act to follow. She also relayed a very funny story about what she plans to do immediately...

Ask Matt | 4/18/2008
Q: I am rather excited for J.J. Abrams' Fringe and Joss Whedon's Dollhouse this fall on Fox, but now I read that Battlestar Galactica's Ronald D. Moore is developing Virtuality, a back-door pilot for Fox based on an idea from Lloyd Braun, one of the instigators of Lost. I'm amazed at the pedigree of talent Fox is attracting right now from the sci-fi genre. Abrams, Whedon and Moore must be among the most prestigious names in modern science-fiction television. I remember you writing a while back...

The mystery as to which Buffyverse grad Joss Whedon was considering for Dollhouse has been solved! Early this morning, Whedon announced on his blog that Angel vet Amy Acker is joining the show's cast in the recurring role of Dr. Claire Saunders, the smart yet sad looker-after of the dolls who may or may not have a crush on nerdy programmer Topher (Fran Kranz). Love. It.Whedon also confirmed that Miracle Laurie has been tapped to play plus-sized doll November, whose comforting and radiant...

According to the Reporter, Lennix will play Boyd, an ex-cop who acts as bodyguard to Eliza Dushku's Echo.Lennix's recent TV turns include Commander in Chief (where he hooked up with Natasha Henstridge) and 24 (where he was mired in a nearly irrelevant sub-subplot). Breaking: Dollhouse Finds Its Boss Lady | Ausiello Report | 4/3/2008
Look what I've got fresh Dollhouse casting prattle! Even better, this performer's name doesn't resemble a word jumble! English actress Olivia Williams has landed the role of Adelle, the Dollhouse's cold and sophisticated leader. She runs things with an efficiency that is both ruthless and protective. In other words, she would die before she showed anyone how lonely she is. Never heard of her, but she sure is perty. She's also got a Wikipedia page, which is always helpful. This just in:...

Eliza Dushku may be bunking with some old friends when she moves into Joss Whedon's Dollhouse next season. According to multiple sources, several Buffyverse grads are being considered for the eight supporting roles now being cast.Whedon confirmed this unbelievably fraktacular turn of events moments before taking the stage at Paley Fest's Buffy tribute last Thursday. With Buffyverse ringmaster Joss Whedon at its helm and Eliza Dushku as its star, Fox's sci-fried Bourne series, Dollhouse, is pretty much required to have a cast that redefines the term "top-notch."
