Ever since Dexter killed his brother, he's been "all Jekyll and no Hyde." But the opening scene with Dexter lying in bed and the fan slicing through his image sing a different tune. It's a great image that shows a distorted image of him - both the Jekyll and the Hyde. Just the way we like him.
The 50' recap: Dexter was drifting and unable to find his "sea legs" since killing his brother. His sister was also having a difficult time getting back into her work. Bombarded with images and talk of the ITK, Deb lost her composure and scared the bejesus out of a young boy but ended up landing a lead on the drug trafficking of Chino's gang. Dexter's previous handiwork, his "beautiful bodies of work," were found in the harbor. The FBI sent "Special Agent Rock Star" Frank Lundy to help solve the puzzle of the Bay Harbor Butcher, a moniker both he and Dexter abhor. Rita decided to bury her dead husband. Dexter lied to Rita about his nonexistent drug addiction and managed to bring a steady hand to his visit with Chino. Dexter told Deb she could stay with him and finally let go of his brother.
Whoever came up with the idea that has Dexter working on his own case is pretty brilliant. We are in for a real treat this season. More great writing in these fantastic lines:
"I will not kill my sister. I will not kill my sister. I will not kill my sister."
"You totally douched me."
Regarding gators, "They ate my puppy."
"This guy is officially the highest point in Florida."
"F--k, he's big." (Little Chino is 6' 9".)
"Tough family, and those were just my sisters."
Maria found a way to get Esme off her back and into her pocket, right where she wants her to be. Angel was off in his spiritual new "hoo-hah" world and Doakes was more pissed than ever. And Rita, well, as far as I am concerned, she's off her rocker. But we'll get to that.
Poor Dexter was a little nervous when the captain brought in the FBI serial-killer specialist: Frank Lundy, played by
Keith Carradine!!! Nice. Lundy is sharp, but will he be able to outsmart our hero?
Even though we know what happened to Dexter, the two flashbacks to the shipping container were upsetting. Why were Dexter and Rudy/Brian separated? Does anyone remember?
At the funeral Dexter dwelled on Jesus' wound and turned to find Rudy/Brian there. He had to let his brother go in order to move on and the only way that was going to happen is if he could get his killing game back on.
I was a little worried when Chino was going to kill little Joey with a pipe iron. The kid was a total schmuck, but not so much so as to be killed for it. Fortunately for him, Dexter speared Chino in the neck with the tranquilizer dart before he ever got out of the lift. "I'm not so much doing this to you as I'm doing it for me." Steady as a surgeon Dexter goes right in with the knife and breathed in that sense of life he'd been struggling to find. Now he could exhale. He's back on his game! He even found a better way to "dispose of his trash," the Gulf Stream. But why not destroy the evidence totally? Is getting caught part of the game? Why doesn't he use any of Masuka's ideas? "Alligators, Everglades, pig farms, wood chippers, sulfuric acid, hell, even meat pies."
Rita felt responsible for Paul's death. So she confronted Dexter about attacking Paul. He came clean, "I totally acted on impulse." Now she thinks he's a drug addict. Yes, he has an addiction, but it is to killing bad people. This woman needs to stay away from addicts of all persuasions.
"I have to say goodbye to reconnect with what's really important - with who I have to be." Dexter did this by dropping the Barbie head into the harbor. I screamed when Rudy came up from the depths to grab Dexter's arm. "Rest in peace. I am." But I'm not - my heart's still pounding.
