Dexter Episode Recap: "Hop a Freighter" Season 5, Episode 11

Dexter discovers someone has bugged his apartment, and things don't go as smoothly as planned when he tries deal with the situation. Meanwhile, Deb and the team find a connection between Jordan Chase and each of his missing friends and Lumen gets lured into a trap.

Dexter and Lumen are planning their strategy on how to get to Chase, but just as the two are about to share a tender moment (over their murder plot, mind you), Dex finally notices that his apartment is bugged. At first he thinks it's the cops, but realizes it's registered to the police department and signed out under Quinn's name.

At the station, the team is now certain Chase is involved in the barrel girls' murders after finding a connection between him and all his missing buddies. Masuka discovers that there was a man's footprint alongside the female's outside Alex's home, and Deb tells Laguerta her theory that a barrel girl victim escaped and is now responsible for killing everyone with help of a man who loves her very much. Dexter listens and looks like he's about to cry.

Dex and Lumen head to Quinn's apartment, where they find the pictures Liddy took of them dumping Cole's body. They don't find any videos on his computer, unless you count the one of the cat that hiccups and passes gas at the same time (hey, it made me chuckle).

Later, Deb confides in Dexter that things between her and Quinn have become "complicated" and reveals that it's because she found out Quinn thought he was involved in Rita's murder. Deb also tells him that what she wants the kind of love the two vigilantes have, because, as twisted as it is, it's also beautiful. Speaking of twisted, in the next scene, a vendor is trying to push some jewelry on Lumen. She says: "It's not quite me." So Dexter suggest a shiny new pocket knife which he buys for her. Lumen lights up as if he just gave her the most thoughtful present a man could give a women. The two share some more touching scenes, and I have to say, it's quite a change of pace to see Dexter truly in love with someone — not the kind of love he had for Rita.

Dexter goes solo to take care of Quinn by staking out the surveillance van, and as he tries to sneak up on the man he thinks is Quinn, out pops Liddy with a taser. Dexter comes to, tied up and realizes Liddy is his captor. Liddy parks and calls Quinn to come down for the bust, and as hard as it is to persuade him, Quinn reluctantly agrees. Liddy then pulls out a camera to force a confession out of Dexter, but Dex gets a good kick in, and after some struggling, manages to stab and kill Liddy. Seconds later, Quinn arrives but can't get into the locked van. He calls Liddy's cell, and just as he does, blood drips out of the van's side door and onto Quinn's shoe — all unbeknownst to him. Great scene.

As soon as he leaves, Dex listens to a frantic voicemail from Lumen saying Emily called her, freaking out because Jordan Chase found out she talked to them. Of course, it's all a trap orchestrated by Jordan, but Lumen bites. Dexter tosses Liddy's video evidence into the ocean and speeds to Emily's house before it's too late.

Lumen, now being held captive by Jordan and Emily, is unable to tell them Dexter's whereabouts. She tries to make a break for it while the two are arguing, but Jordan nails her with a swift kidney punch before grabbing the fireplace poker. "I never had to do anything before," Jordan screams. (After all, he always had his minions do everything while he oversaw it all.) "Now I have no choice, I can't leave any witnesses." Emily tries to stop him, but she winds up as the one he kills.

Dexter arrives to find blood everywhere, and is somewhat relieved to discover Emily's body instead of Lumen's. He follows another trail of blood, and finds the knife he gave Lumen. A look of rage on Dexter's face is absolutely bone-chilling.
