Jumpin' Jehosephat, that was a good
Dexter! We had intrique and murder and sex and scandal. Delicious.
Rita's mother, downplayed wonderfully by
JoBeth Williams, visited, and though she was apparently supportive of the Bay Harbor Butcher, she also inferred that Dexter has a secret, and wouldn't she be surprised. Rita didn't quite nod, but I felt she was thinking, "Why yes, he does. He's a drug addict." Which, of course, we all know isn't true, but whatever helps you sleep at night, Rita.
Dexter's "alien" analysis of Rita's mom, Gail, was hilarious. The funny voice he did when saying things like, "You have made me your sworn enemy, evil woman" and "Perhaps I have misjudged you, oh wise one," made me laugh out loud.
I was, however, mortified that they were discussing the BHB at the dinner table with those two small children. How did Cody know about him? Was he watching gruesome news stories? I guess he could have heard about it at school, but not really appropriate conversation for them. Not to mention the "Butcher Man" costume grandma made for Cody.
Doakes had a little work to do with an old special-ops friend, and we heard more about his ex-wife and why he ultimately left her. Debra proved she knows serial killers like the back of her hand when she said "You don't kill this many people 'cause it's a chore. You do it 'cause you like it." Lundy looked duly impressed.
Rita had just about talked Dexter into finding another sponsor; he even broke up with Lila - for about two minutes. I mean, seriously, she's gorgeous, and even if she found out every dark secret of Dexter's, he'd be crazy to toss her aside.
Jaime Murray is excellent as the offbeat eccentric ex-addict hell-bent on saving Dexter. Again, she had one of the best monologues of the episode when she threw him against the car to try to talk some sense into him. When she said he calls himself a monster so he doesn't have to take any responsibility, you could feel the tension. Dexter is always saying he's so happy he doesn't feel emotion, but I think Lila's going to get under his skin. He even got to show her his bodies - granted, he didn't tell her they were his - but she definitely understands him better than Rita. I imagine if he did tell her straight up that he was the serial killer, she would find a way to convince him he was right to be that way. "We're all good and we're all evil." What's Lila's evil?
When Oscar Sota's wife led Angel in the house, I figured she probably wanted to show him more than just her husband's guns. Good for Angel - he needs a girlfriend. I hope that story goes in that direction.
The biggest plot twist for me was seeing Maria with Esmee's fiancé! I did not see that coming. I loved that Maria was using him to get her job back
and had a conscious about it. Too funny. I had been rooting for her when the captain gave her the old job back, but that was before we found out about her deviant ways.
The break in the case that Masuka found kept the show going. But perhaps the best moment came after Dex had melted his "body of work" only to find that the evidence in question - the mysterious algae - was on the rocks, not the bodies, and kept in an entirely different location. Dex's expression was perfect. It is curious that he is making mistakes. He has been so careful for so many years; not only have his bodies been exposed, but he has left traces of evidence behind. Oh, what will become of our serial hero?
"I don't have a badge, I have a laminate."
Special ops: "They're generally known for settling their arguments so peacefully."
"The only part about that I find surprising was that you had a buddy."
"I'm really the blood guy."
"You have fibers and threads unknown to us."
"The last guy I had sex with tried to kill me."
So your husband is an engineer and a secret crime fighter?"
There were no sneak peeks for next week's show. Bummer. But if you check out
Dexter on our
Online Video Guide, it should hold you over until then.
