As the penultimate episode of <i>Desperate Housewives</i>, this episode was more than a little disappointing. It seemed to largely serve as filler for whatever is going to happen in the two-hour finale without many substantial moments. Lynette saved Tom from being transferred to Mumbai and promptly broke up with his boss, but didn't tell Tom how she felt. Tom punched his boss when he went on and on about how difficult Lynette was and even split from Jane — a move in itself that felt a tiny bit anticlimactic — but didn't tell Lynette how he felt either. These are all minor complaints since at least it now seems like a sure thing that they will get back together, unlike earlier this season when it seemed it could go either way, but still.
Gaby just realized that, yes, Bree is on trial for a murder her husband committed and started to feel guilty about it. Yet the biggest thing she did to help Bree was pick out a scarf for her. You would think as a personal shopper, Gaby also would have been able to come up with better wardrobe options for her court appearances than stripes and a red dress. Gaby at least had a nice scene defending Bree to some local gossipers in the grocery store check-out lane, but pretty much nothing was mentioned about Carlos' adjustment to his new job and their new financial state.
Bree's murder case at least saw some major progress — it just wasn't in her favor whatsoever. During the episode, the prosecution brought up her suicide note that talked about how she couldn't live with the guilt and totally blindsided Trip. Now there's a very real chance Bree will go away for murder, which explains Gaby's growing guilt. Yet despite all this movement in the case, there was about zero movement with her and Trip. He held her hand, brought her donuts and Casablanca, but no kiss, no long hugs, no mixed signals at all. How boring. The chemistry between them is obviously there, but of all the seemingly predictable finale plot points, it would have been nice to see some actual step towards a relationship happen before the finale. And don't get me started on Fairview's version of Kalinda, a private investigator with horrible fashion sense who seems prone to bright colors (a turquoise sweater, a red convertible) when her work is supposed to be all about discretion. Also, where was her baseball bat? Doesn't every private investigator need one? OK, I digress.
The only storyline that really made progress was — surprisingly — Susan's. It only took her eight years (12 or 13 if you could the flash-forward) and she is finally learning to be a mom to Julie and not vice-versa. In this episode, Susan confronted Porter about working too much and not being around for Julie's many baby-related appointments. (Dear Lynette, time to stop worrying about Tom and start teaching your son to act like a man). Porter's nerves about being a father prompted Susan to decide to sell her house on the Lane and move her and M.J. up with Julie so that she can finish school and be a mom. Of all the women, Susan needed movement in this episode the most so she doesn't close out the series with the most depressing ending ever, but it would have been nice for the writers to spread the wealth a little more.
Oh, and then Renee continued to be a bridezilla — shocker! — by making her maid of honor Lynette wear a purple tule nightmare. Does anyone actually care about this wedding? That's what I thought.
Now that the finale is coming up, time to start making your guesses about how the show will end. Will Susan really move off the Lane or is Porter suddenly going to get over his baby daddy nerves? Will Lynette and Tom really reunite or will fans just be left with the possibility of a reconciliation? Will Bree get convicted or will Gaby take the blame and save her friend from going down? Carlos has already been to prison once, he can do it again, right? And, finally, is there any real hope of Bree and Trip getting together or is she destined to close the series alone?
