Desperate Housewives Episode Recap: "Assassins" Season 7, Episode 11

On Sunday's episode of Desperate Housewives, two Wisteria Lane residents' lives hang in the balance: Susan was trampled during the riot and Paul Young was shot by an unknown assailant. After finally moving in together, Bree and Keith get an unexpected visit from Orson. Gaby tries to make things right with Juanita, but struggles to truly let go of her biological daughter Grace. Renee ponders whether or not to tell Lynette about her history with Tom.

Big shocker: Paul Young survives the shooting. However, the real battle has just begun now that detectives must figure out who shot him.

One of the best parts of the episode is Mike's long-awaited return. On the surface, it looks like he's back to check on Susan, but we quickly learn that he actually returned to Fairview to shoot Paul Young. After Felicia gets a visit from her daughter, Beth, about Paul's shooting, Felicia calls Mike to tell him he should have waited to pull the trigger.

While there's no shortage of suspects on Wisteria Lane, Mike makes a lot of sense. Paul got Susan fired from her job earlier this season, then helped orchestrate the halfway house and riot that put Susan in the hospital. Even going back to Season 1, Paul tried to frame Mike for the murder of Martha. Plus, there's a good possibility there's some money in the deal for Mike's shooting Paul, and we all know he and Susan could use it. And he used to be a hitman! Yes, it all makes perfect sense and it's a great way to bring Mike back into the mix without making him simply Susan's second-fiddle.

Er wrong! As much as I loved that theory, Mike visits Felicia at the end of the episode and says that although she asked him to do it, he didn't go through with it. So now the mystery remains of who shot Paul. As the detectives continue searching for suspects, they discover Beth's connection to Felicia and are shocked that Paul didn't bring it up himself. They go to his hospital room (when Beth isn't there) to inquire about Felicia. Paul does his best to internalize his complete shock and tells the officer it's all water under the bridge with his mother-in-law and thanks them for not bringing it up in front of his wife. Uh oh.

When Mike visits Susan, he learns that she is refusing important dialysis treatment. The doctors had to remove one kidney and the other is only operating at subpar levels. Mike asks that she do what the doctor asks, and Susan asks that he support her decision to do things her way.

As soon as MJ goes to visit her at the hospital, Susan comes face-to-face with the severity of her diagnosis. She tries to show MJ she's ok by walking him to the cafeteria, but collapses and starts having seizures on their way to getting ice cream. It's times like this when Susan's semi-ditzy ways really annoy me. What did she think the doctors were trying to tell her?

She soon succumbs to dialysis treatments, but is visibly worried about the estimated 3-5 year process of finding a kidney donor. In a teary moment, she asks Lynette, Bree and Gaby to look after MJ should anything happen to her. Bree and Gaby simply tell her she'll get through it, but Lynette, having lost her own child not so long ago, agrees to Susan's request.

Lynette and Renee

In the midst of her own personal health crisis, Susan tells Renee she no longer plans to tell Lynette about Renee's affair with Tom. Instead, she lays the guilt on thick, telling Renee that if she never tells Lynette the truth, their friendship won't be real. Unfortunately, Renee has absolutely horrible timing and breaks down in tears during at a business lunch with Lynette and a client. After the client runs home, Renee confesses to sleeping with Tom during their brief break-up. Lynette is pretty peeved and cries over the revelation. She also asks Renee one thing: not to tell Tom that she knows.

Lynette being Lynette, she chooses to torture Tom with boiling water and other pranks rather than just to talk to him about his tryst with Renee. She's going to have way too much fun with this.

In the wake of the riot, Bree and Keith have moved past their differences (and his annoying dad) and are moving in together again. Things get crowded fast in the Van de Kamp house when Orson returns, saying that his nurse-turned-girlfriend, Judy, kicked him out and he needs a place to stay. He's more than a little startled to see Keith has moved in (aren't we all), and insists he will only stay a few days.

On top of Keith's scruffy demeanor, Orson begins to take notice of Keith and Bree's many differences and asks why she's making her rebound relationship into so much more. She denies it's a rebound and says their bond is the real deal, but Orson digs deeper. At dinner, Orson begins to make small digs at Keith's taste and intelligence, which pushes Keith to throw mashed potatoes at Orson. Orson responds back by throwing peas and so on and so forth in a hilarious scene that plays to both actors' strengths.

The next day, Bree visits Judy to ask what went wrong with Orson and — surprise! — she reveals that Orson left her to get back with Bree. For some illogical reason, Bree decides to share this info with Keith but then also tells him Orson needs to stay with them for a few more days. Keith thinks it's because she still loves Orson and storms out. But Bree runs outside and tackles Keith, sending them both straight into the manure on her front yard and professing how much she loves him and the profound effect he's had on her. It's taken me awhile to warm up to this coupling, especially since they have moved pretty fast in their relationship, but seeing Bree Van de Kamp in her dress pants and sweater with dirt all over her face is a really winning, genuine moment.

After Juanita discovered the truth about Grace and tried to run away, the young girl is due for some major couch time. At first, Gaby tries to buy her a doll but it's a no-go once Juanita finds a picture of Grace on Gaby's phone. Once Gaby and Carlos send her to therapy, the therapist determines the only way to resolve Juanita's hurt feelings is to remove every trace of Grace from their lives. This is no easy task for Gaby, who insists on keeping photos and angers Carlos in the process.

Carlos does his best to make his daughter feel at home again by deleting all the pictures of Grace around the house. But rather than really try and move on, Gaby internalizes her mixed emotions and pain even more. In a pretty creepy move, she goes back to the doll shop and buys a doll that bears a striking resemblance to Grace. As Gaby said herself earlier in the episode, "this got creepy fast."

So what did you think of "Assassins?" When will Gaby's downward spiral end? What will Orson try next to win back Bree? How long is Lynette going to torture Tom, and will she ever forgive Renee? And most importantly, who shot Paul Young?

Premise: Following her suicide, Mary Alice Young keeps tabs on friends and family she left behind on bucolic suburban Wisteria Lane. But this being a prime-time soap (if a tongue-in-cheek one), they all harbor a sordid secret or two. Created by writer-producer Marc Cherry (a 'Golden Girls' alum), 'Housewives' was an instant hit and a frequent contender on Emmy night .
