Defiant Requiem

2003, TV Show

Murry Sidlin leads the Oregon Symphony and the Portland Opera Chorus in Giuseppe Verdi's "Requiem" to honor Jews who performed it at the Czech concentration camp Terezin in 1943 and '44. The Nazis held up Terezin as a model camp, but the reality was different. "It's very difficult to sing when you're hungry" is how survivor Marianka Zadikow-May puts it before this performance. But she and the other prisoners sang this Catholic liturgical work because of its themes of judgment and deliverance.
