The third season opens at the end of the red-king-crab season. Captains and crews are on the Bering Sea fishing for opilio crab in subzero arctic weather, 60-mph winds and turbulent seas, forcing deckhands to spend hours clearing ice with sledgehammers.
The crews are working 40 hours without sleep, and equipment failures and weather make things even more perilous. The Maverick and Far West Leader stop for repairs, and the Time Bandit picks up a crewman who fell overboard from another ship.
As king-crab season wanes, Capt. Hillstrand on the Time Bandit starts dropping gear; Capt. Hansen of the Northwestern hauls in pots full of keepers; the crew of the Wizard struggle to make their final offload.
The 2006 red king-crab fishing season ends, and Sig Hansen and the Northwestern crew finish a 30-hour shift and head for home; Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie returns to Dutch Harbor with no injuries.
