Question: I had not seen a letter about this, so I thought I'd send an R.I.P. to three recently canceled sci-fi shows, only one of which surprised me. I know you didn't like Journeyman and are tired of people talking about it, but people seemed to miss the fact that that show should not been compared to Quantum Leap or Life on Mars, but rather The Time Traveller's Wife. That's why the relationships took center stage, and I don't think enough has been said about the chemistry between the cast and the great Kevin McKidd. The show really hit its stride in the last few episodes, but if a show doesn't make money, it doesn't. That said, I hope TV gives McKidd a chance for another starring vehicle. The same week that Journeyman was canceled, USA Network's The Dead Zone and The 4400 also got the ax. Somebody should have put a fork in Dead Zone a long time ago. The scripts became worse and worse over the years, and the producers totally lost control of the ongoing mythology. In contrast, The ...

Anthony Michael Hall by Philippe Bosse/USA Network; Billy Campbell by Billy Zenuk/USA Network
UPDATE: I just got my hands on an exclusive statement from Jeff Wachtel, USA Exec VP Original Programming, regarding the demise of Dead Zone and The 4400: "We wish we could keep all our great shows alive forever. But we feel we need to give some of our new shows a platform to grow, and it's with great sadness that we say goodbye to two shows that had a great run and helped create the resurgence of original programming on our network and on all of cable."My original story appears below.Next time USA Network gives you a lump of coal for Christmas, be thankful very thankful because this year, my moles tell me, what you're getting is the cancellation of both Dead Zone and The 4400.Yep, per multiple sources, the much-discussed Armageddon came early to Dead Zone so early, in fact, that the show's last episode aired... gee, back in September. What turned out to be the 4400's series finale aired the same night. In a statement posted on the official 4400 message boards, s...

Dylan and Chris Bruno, Numbers
They may not get along on screen but for brothers Chris and Dylan Bruno, every opportunity to work together is a good one. This Friday, Chris, best known as Sheriff Bannerman on The Dead Zone, guest-stars on Numbers (9 pm/ET, CBS) as SWAT captain Tim King, who rushes in to save the day when David (Alimi Ballard) is taken hostage inside the FBI building. TVGuide.com talked to Dylan about sibling rivalry and the college romance that connects his older brother to CBS' math procedural.
TVGuide.com: How did you rope your brother into doing this?Dylan Bruno: That's funny. The producers and I had all been joking around, "Oh, we've got to get your brother down here at some point," and there were a couple of times where they tho

Burn Notice's Jeffrey Donovan and The 4400's Billy Campbell
TV's sizzling summer season has saved its best for last. Here is Part 2 of our guide to the season enders you will not want to miss.
Monk, USA NetworkFinale airs Friday, Sept. 14, at 9 pm/ETDonal Logue guest-stars as a grifter, but the big news is Monk's other chance encounter. Says star Tony Shalhoub, "He literally bumps into a woman on the street. She's a total stranger, but he can't get her out of his head. I don't want to give too much away, because it's a poignant ending." Maybe a setup for romance when the show returns in January? "It may be time to open that door," Shalhoub says. "And not a moment too soon."
Psych, USA NetworkFinale airs Friday, Sept. 14, at 10 pmKevin Sorbo (Hercules) guest-stars as a hotshot bounty hunter once idolized

Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron and Ashley Tisdale in High School Musical 2 by Adam Larkey/Disney Channel
The ridiculous (in a good way) ratings for Disney Channel's multiple record-breaking weekend launch of High School Musical 2 was just the most spectacular reminder of what a great TV summer this has been — if you have cable. Not even a big hit like TNT's The Closer can match HSM2's numbers, and some of the best series, like AMC's mesmerizing Mad Men, are only doing so-so. But that's only to be expected given the glut of programming on many nights — including Thursdays, when Mad Men goes head-to-head with USA Network's latest clever breakout caper, Burn Notice. I thought my DVRs would get a break this summer. Didn't happen.Just look at the options weve had over the last few nights, including terrific new episodes of Burn Notice and Mad Men on Thursday. Im really enjoying Burn now that ex-spy Michael Weston is getting closer to the truth about how he was set up to be fired. And what can I say about Mad Men besides the word I used to start my initial review of th...

Anthony Michael Hall, The Dead Zone
Armageddon is so last week. USA Network’s The Dead Zone (Sundays at 10 pm/ET) ended its first season in 2002 with a hook as fresh as it was horrifying: Psychic Johnny Smith (Anthony Michael Hall) had a vision of Washington, D.C., in nuclear ruin. The man responsible? Ambitious politico Greg Stillson (Sean Patrick Flanery).
Five years later that plot’s still playing out, but now many shows spin on the fear of an apocalypse (Heroes, Sleeper Cell) or have nukes that actually do detonate (Jericho, 24). What was once unfathomable is now almost ho-hum. So how will The Dead Zone — back for its sixth season — keep us hooked on its doomsday scenario? By twisting it, turning it and sending it in

Although there's no official confirmation from USA Network, my spies tell me that both The Dead Zone and Psych have been renewed. The Psych pick-up was a no-brainer, but Dead Zone? By all accounts, the just-concluded fifth season was supposed to be its last ΒΆ although Anthony Michael Hall didn't rule out the show coming back when he visited our podcast in June. It's as if he was psychic or something!
