Will American Horror Story Be a Hit for FX? A Look at the Recent History of Horror on TV

Historically, horror hasn't scared up a great track record on TV. Supernatural series? Yes. Terrifying ones? No. The good news for FX, which on Wednesday launches American Horror Story, is that audiences seem to be growing braver. Millions have dared to peek out from behind their fingers, making hits out of The Walking Dead and True Blood. Even when Nip/Tuck dipped its scalpels into overt horror -- terrorizing us with sadistic serial killer The Carver -- it drew record numbers to FX.

But do viewers have the stomach for a haunted house dreamed up by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, who gave us both Glee and Nip/Tuck?  read full article

With the heavily panned and ...

Question: With the heavily panned and commercial disaster of the new X-Files theatrical movie, it makes me truly wonder if Johnny Depp can pull a miracle and make the new theatrical version of Dark Shadows into a very good movie and one that is a commercial success. In addition, the original Dark Shadows television series has been off the air since 1971 and the revival series ended in 1991. Based on the fact that The X-Files has been off the air for only six years and had a poor box office, do you think Depp can actually bring in millions of new and old(er) fans to the big screen after all these years since Dark Shadows has seen the light of day on television? Answer: An interesting question, and one that taps into the very core of my cult upbringing, having been a big fan of the daytime Dark Shadows as a kid. But these are such different franchises and such different challenges in translating them to the big screen. The X-Files movie needed to stay true to the series and core ... read more

Buffy the Vampire Slayer still slays!

So it’s week two of my favoritest month of the year and the scary shows on DVD are keeping my player—and Pepito the Wonder Chihuahua—working overtime. And I know this column was supposed to be all about boorific B&W fare, but the vampires struck back over the weekend and there’s no denying these pains in the neck!Obviously, if we’re talking about bloodsuckers, there’s none better than Angel. BUT…that one we’re saving for the end of the month and a big old chat with a certain Whedonverse whiz kid we all know and love. (Hmmm, wonder who that could be?)Anyhoo, with David Boreanaz’s Angelus on hold, I say we give the love to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, since the show that gave us Angel continues to rock well beyond its own cancellation grave. Why, the uninitiated may ask? Three words, people. Best. Writing. Ever.If I’m lying, I’m undyin’. Honestly, there’s something spooky about how well the dialogue stands up, even four... read more

Premise: Ghosts, witches and werewolves populated this creepy daytime serial about Maine's Collins family, which included Barnabas, a nearly 200-year-old vampire who longed to be cured. The supernatural soap shifted between the present and the 18th century to tell its gothic tale. A prime-time revival mounted in 1991 possessed more special effects, sex and gore than its bare-bones original, but it never caught on and was buried by NBC in less than two months.
