Tonight, Dancing with the Stars cuts its final couple. Who won't get a chance to dance for Mirrorball glory? Plus: How's Katherine doing?

So if you haven't heard yet, the All-Stars season is officially happening next fall. Thoughts? Maks has some. This has been a long time coming, and if done right, I think it could be good. It all depends on who they can get to return. Tom promises "former champs, fan favorites and controversial characters." Ugh. Please, no Kate and Bristol. Just no.

Anyhow, we still have to get through this season. Almost there, people! Who do we think is going home tonight? The scores are irrelevant since everyone's three points apart. This will be a true test of Katherine's fan base, which is an unknown quantity stateside. But she most likely got some sympathy votes for her injury.

After William and Cheryl's samba encore, we get down to business with Katherine and Mark. She felt a twinge in her back last night, but is cleared to continue if they make it through. Of course, she was convinced last night that they were dunzo. "I feel like the end of our salsa was the end [of our run]," she said. Which obviously means she'll be safe.

First safe couple
Katherine and Mark — stop jumping up and down, woman! You don't want people saying you faked that, do you?!

Package time! The pros give their take on the competition. There's the usual athlete spiel about Donald and great technique praise for Katherine, but the best (read: most ridiculous) comments come from Derek and Cheryl. He says Maria's been a dark horse, which is a lie. Dude, no one's ever a dark horse when she's paired with the Golden Boy. Luckily, Cheryl takes the heat off him with this gem: "With William, it doesn't matter if he misses a step because of [his emotion]." Last time I checked, "emotion" is not a synonym for "hotness" and this is not Looking Hot with the Stars. She does speak the truth with this: "I don't think that Derek cares that Maria is injured."

After a Design-a-Dance samba featuring Tristan (yay!) and Chelsie, and a performance by Alanis Morissette (we have the same birthday, which is also the day Dancing premiered — see, it all comes full circle), Maria and Derek learn their fate. And they are in jeopardy.

Julianne Hough, Mary J. Blige, Diego Boneta (and lots of mascara) perform to plug Rock of Ages. I love how Jules only comes back when she has a flick to promote. At least bring Ryan over so you can mortify him too. Speaking of Ryan, "How's that boyfriend treating you?" Tom asks. "He's treating me pretty well," she purrs. Vom.

And yet, that is still not enough filler. Carrie Underwood schools everyone in how to sing live before the last two hit the Red Light of Doom.

Next safe couple
William and Cheryl

Donald and Peta are also in jeopardy.

And the couple going home is... Maria and Derek, which means Donald and Peta are going to the finals.

"I learned how strong I was, I learned to persevere," Maria says amid the boos.

"It's been an amazing season," Derek says. "She's not just a champion of dancing, but a champion of life."

Is this a shocker? I don't really think so. If it wasn't gonna be Katherine, it was gonna be Maria. William's got the Latin vote and has surely picked up his share of fans this season. Donald's got the Cheeseheads and enough people who are pissed that the judges (aka Len) keep low-balling him. Yeah, Maria and Derek got a perfect score and had the highest score of the night, but they can almost do no wrong in the judges' eyes. The point spread was too close and many probably threw their support elsewhere knowing they were on top. I guess the most surprising thing is that Derek's fan base couldn't pull them through. Or maybe hers is just that small.

I have to say I am super happy for Peta. For a newbie who was eliminated first last season (with Metta "Elbow" World Peace), she was probably not even on the producers' short list to return this season, but Donald requested her because she was out first last season. How awesome would it be if they win now?

What do you think? Did Maria deserve to go home? What do you think of the final three? Will Katherine's back hold her back? Will Donald finally get his 30 next week? Does it not matter that William misses steps? Who's your pick to win?
