As Season 3 begins, a court has appointed Patty to recover assets lost in a Ponzi scheme orchestrated by Louis Tobin (Len Cariou) while Ellen is working for the DA's office, which will prosecute him. Tobin has admitted guilt, but insists that his wife and son (Lily Tomlin, Campbell Scott) knew nothing of his fraud. Meanwhile, a friendly but persistent architect (Keith Carradine) seeks out Patty in a bar; and in flash-forward, Patty's car is rammed by another car. Winstone: Martin Short.
While Joe Tobin (Campbell Scott) decides between "family" and "integrity," Patty and Tom dig deeper into Louis Tobin's secrets. Tom gets a boost from Ellen in the effort but also receives some bad news relating to Louis Tobin. Meanwhile, Patty and Phil, locked in their bitter divorce battle, find one piece of common ground: their dog. Louis Tobin: Len Cariou. Winstone: Martin Short.
Patty battles with the DA over access to Danielle Marchetti as Hewes & Shayes prepares to auction off items in Tobin's apartment. Meanwhile, a Hewes & Shayes job candidate (Tara Summers) has questions for Ellen about Patty; and West Virginia reporter Josh Reston (Matthew Davis), who worked with Ellen on the UNR case, looks her up in New York.
Under pressure to make progress in the Tobin case, Patty strikes a surprising bargain. She also has another encounter with architect Julian Decker (Keith Carradine). Meanwhile, Ellen uncovers new evidence about Louis Tobin's death; Joe Tobin meets Stuart Zedeck (Dominic Chianese); and Tom's financial problems begin to get to him. Sterling Biddle: Wallace Shawn.
Tom and Ellen search for the missing Carol Tobin, as does Alex Benjamin, who was hired to do so by Leonard Winstone at Marilyn Tobin's behest. Meanwhile, Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson) returns to launch a foundation to promote wind energy; Patty meets Tessa Marchetti's Antigua money man, Horatio Emanuel (Michael Potts); and Ellen runs into Michael Hughes and the noticeably pregnant Jill Burnham (Wendy Moniz). Terry Brooke: Craig Bierko.
Patty's clients want her thrown off the Tobin case, while Joe Tobin and Tom both confront Tessa Marchetti. Meanwhile, Patty gives Ellen the name of someone who could help with her sister's drug case. Ellen also dreams about a woman from her childhood she can't place. And Leonard Winstone has two more unpleasant encounters with his father.
Tessa Marchetti's arrest forces Patty to deal with the DA's office. Patty also hears that Ellen had told Gates about Tessa, and Gates learns that Ellen is working with Patty. Meanwhile, Ellen learns something about her childhood; and Terry Brooke (Craig Bierko) is dissatisfied with the Frobisher character as written in the biopic's script. "I need access to your dark side," he tells Frobisher.
