Damages Episode Recap: "Burn It, Shred It, I Don't Care" Season 2, Episode 2

This week on FX's Damages, Ellen's plan to sting Patty hit a snag, Tom dodged a bullet, and new light was shed on Daniel Purcell. On with the recap!

The episode opens with the same "present day" tease — Ellen punishing her prey for not telling the truth by squeezing off a couple of shots.

Six months earlier.... Patty interrupts Ellen's latest (and increasingly sloppy) FBI meet to say there's been an emergency, that being the suspicious death of Purcell's wife. Daniel tells the cops that a blonde guy rushed past him as he arrived home, but the fact remains that he is Suspect No. 1 (being the hubby and all). Asked if he has any enemies, Daniel lies and says no, something which Patty (signing on as his flack) later berates him for. Daniel claims the cops needn't know about his company's threat. Meanwhile, his boss looks on as a security detail escorts Daniel into his hotel hideaway.

Taking on Purcell's case, Patty hands the FBI's infant mortality off to Tom. Ellen offers to help out on the criminal defense case, but Patty turns cold and says no thanks. Ellen takes a meeting with the FBI agents (in broad daylight!), who have decided to rebound from this latest wrinkle by nailing Tom and then flipping him against Patty. Is Ellen OK with destroying Tom's career? "He's a big boy," she says, and thus can pay the price.

After Uncle Pete leaves Ellen a clipping about Frobisher leaving the hospital, she tracks down Wes. "I had a chance to kill him," she shares. "It would have been so easy." Revenge, though, isn't what David would want her to pursue, she figured. Ellen fears it is now too late, but Wes says au contraire, mon cher. "There's always a way."

Ellen apparently likes what Wes is selling, because we flash-forward six months and these kids are going at it in bed. The sexytime gets sidelined, though, by a phone call. Ellen ahs to go, but she can't say why. "Don't be here when I get back," she growls. Use him and lose him, eh?

Purcell and Patty discuss his "mistake" in sending her his files, which proved the high toxicity of a compound — only his data was ignored and then fudged to make the unknown client happy. "Do you think your firm killed Christine?" Patty asks. Nah, they're not big enough, Daniel reckons. He suspects some Big Energy client is to blame. Still, he's keeping mum and will go to prison if he has to. "I was stupid once," he says, seemingly referring to something in his and Hewes' past. Speaking of said mysterious past... patty is visibly bothered when she and Daniel bump into her son, Michael. Anvil alert!

Later, Patty begs to look into Daniel's damning report, but he refuses. She makes reference to his temper — "You know you have one." Patty sneaks off to consult with an EPA biggie, correctly predicting that he is rotten and will leak her info to whoever commissioned Purcell's report. Sure enough, he does, prompting Mr. Sentry (?), Purcell's boss, to summon the firm's attack dog: attorney Claire Maddox (aka Marcia Gay Harden). The mere mention of Patty Hewes gets Claire licking her chops, as it does with the judge Maddox convinces to sign off on an order to seize Purcell's files from Hewes & Associates.

Ellen and Tom meet with Monique, the "face" of the class-action infant mortality case. She baits Tom into fronting her $60,000 against the eventual payout, which is a big no-no. Lest he lose the business, Tom says OK. Patty's security chief tips her off to Tom's conversation, and she stops him in his tracks before he can make the payoff.

Misleading promo alert! Patty calls Ellen into her office and hands her a photo, saying, "Someone we know has been keeping a secret." And it's ... Tom's wife's sonogram. Yawn! Later, Tom tells Ellen that the infant mortality case is a goner.

Wes tells Ellen he has figured it out — she is after Arthur Frobisher. "You do not mess with a guy like that," he warns. "You have to forget about him." Um, so why then Wes do you have a big-ass shrine to the guy in your armoire?! And how does your small arsenal fit in??

Flashing forward.... Ellen comes home, calls out for Wes, but he isn't around. After she shuts off the alarm and sows her gun ... we see that he's patiently lurking outside her door.

Patty tells Purcell that she purposely leaked info to the EPA guy, and as a result they now know who commissioned the report on the compound — and it's the nation's (globe's?) third-largest energy provider. "They killed Christine," she suspects.

Back at the office, Ellen and Patty discuss Tom's near-payoff to Monique. "Everyone's looking to play an angle," Patty warns. Sure enough, we then see Claire Maddox get into a car with Purcell and ask him, "Did you tell anyone about us?" We then flash-forward to Purcell digging outside somewhere, and then setting something on fire.
