Season Finale Season 1, Episode 13

Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. I thought I was proven wrong three times tonight, but it turns out I was off-base just once. I thought that Tom was going to leave the tape in the bookend - but he didn't. One "X" for Matt. I thought that this episode would end with a big twist, then grew to think that we'd only get complete closure. But the twist came. And speaking of that twist, I thought that when Ellen was solicited by Nye's FBI agents, she would comply with their request and go undercover at Hewes & Associates, and that would frame our Season 2. Though at first they made us think Ellen declined, she didn't. And thus we have the setup for next season (still officially pending, so cross your fingers). We got a lot of closure otherwise. Patty got the charges against Ellen dropped... by brokering Greg's tape, which at the end of the day emerged as moot. The Frobisher case was settled - and then some, thanks to Larry the snitch. Ellen and Patty arrived at some sort of truce. David was buried. We got a look at the gravesite Ellen ran off to visit during her AWOL excursion. A daughter whom she lost during pregnancy 35 years ago. How does that fit into the larger picture? Maybe that is for Season 2 to divulge. We learned exactly what transpired between whom and by whose hand when Ellen was attacked at Patty's place. It was not one of Frobisher's goons but a killer hired by Patty. Hence Uncle Pete's involvement in the cleanups here there and everywhere. Patty wasn't cowering at the beach because of poor Ray Fiske. She was aghast to digest that she tried to have Ellen killed - and failed. We had several blog readers' theory confirmed that Rick (aka bearded goon) is actually a cop, and as such effectively robbed the murder scene of the penlight that would support Ellen's story. We got a sense, there in the car with Nye and the feds, of just how much Ellen knew or came to know, and when she knew or came to know it. Ellen is angry, hurt and not at all snowed by Patty's forgiveness. I saw a certain symbolism in their last scene taking place on the dock, a setting like where Patty chucked the dog collar. Collateral damage and all. Am I chomping at the bit to see a season of Ellen trying to get the goods on Patty? It wasn't my first choice, no - I was rather resigned to starting over with a fresh cast and a new twisted tale - but I could warm up to it. We'd still have Tom in play, Nye, maybe Katie.... The fact is that TV needs shows like Damages, quality scripted shows that require brainpower, so I'll just be glad to have it back in any form. I now leave you and this show blog with some sound bites from that final scene: "I do... I deeply regret it. I am ashamed of what I did. I hope that you can forgive me... someday." "I don't believe in the law anymore.... But I believe in justice, so I'll come work for you again." Let the sparring begin. Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding.
