"I Hate These People" Season 1, Episode 11

Again, I lead off this recap with: Wow. I mean, wow. Yes, you had to see it coming. The usurping of his power at the firm, the blackmail, the guilt.... Any other outcome than Ray swallowing the barrel of a gun seemed impossible, a cheat. Then when they showed him in bed with his wife, I thought, "OK, maybe we're not going there." But suicide is a selfish act. It appears that our two stories, present day and the flashbacks, have now met, since Ray's spatter of cranium has soiled Patty's loafer. That's a question answered, a red herring dismissed. So, assuming that Patty flakes and flees because of Ray's suicide, she never sees Ellen again. Meaning that she already cleared Ellen to stay at her place.... But Ellen and David haven't had the big fight yet, have they? Don't they have to have the fight over "a man being dead now," before Patty lets Ellen stay over? So Patty must see her again. And what of the "Did we go too far?" chat? Perhaps that came before Patty met with Ray in her office? OK, so I'm a bit lost - but excited! Things are mad percolating now! Know what's kind of crazy in all of this? Ellen figured it all out. Plucky little weak-link Ellen made sense of this maze of lies and misdirection and figured it out. So George Moore's kin and Mrs. Fiske can "thank" her, I guess. This was Ray's episode, all right. (Round of applause for the fine Zeljko Ivanek.) What a roller-coaster of torment and... worse torment. His flashbacks explained to us how he and his Gregory met, how they bonded, how bad a haircut Greg had back then, how Ray tipped him off to sell the stock - was the original plan to "stiff" him with worthless shares, but when Ray "fell" for the lunk, he had a change of heart? - and, in the beginning of the end, how Ray made a clumsy, unrequited pass. One other new piece to the puzzle is that present-day Patty seems genuinely surprised by the voicemail about Ellen being in jail for killing David. That fuels the theory that she made tracks as soon as Ray slumped to the floor. One could then extrapolate that David's death is at the hand of either A) Lila the loon or B) Frobisher's people (not that many of them are still alive) looking for the videotape Katie was fingering when she surprisingly surfaced at the end of that one street scene. And what's with the Lurch-like guy fiddling with the bulb in David's apartment? Did we meet him and I forgot? Is he Ellen's eventual attacker? Or is he too tall and too balding? OK, it's late, so on to the bullets! " Greg did not just say to Ray, "I'll try anything once." Tease! " When Ellen recounted her candid quitting to Hollis Nye, anyone else imagine him thinking, "You crazy, dumb girl." " Patty placating Tom with her, "Yes, I should treat you like [a partner]." " Patty to Ray: "You're a Baptist, right, Ray? Repent." Lastly, the back page of Gregory's letter to Ray (for those with bad TV reception): "In case anything happens to me, I made a videotape explaining everything. I wanted you to know there's still time to do the right thing. - Gregory" PS. Which character said tonight's episode title, "I Hate These People"? show less
