Here at TV Guide, we’re all about our shows returning from that g-d strike. The nightmare is over and things may finally get back to normal for the next few months. Plus, with the goodies like House and Gossip Girl coming back, we’re spared the flood of midseason nightmares that usually crop up every year about now. Sure, there’s Lipstick Jungle, but so far, we’ve seen nothing as hateful as Quintuplets. Or god forbid that craptastic Kingdom Hospital.That said, not all TV late-comers are created equal. Hell, some of the best ones available on DVD right now don’t even have equals! So let’s give it up for….Dallas — Like it’s Denver doppelganger Dynasty, which bowed in January 1981, the original trash classic kicked off at midseason, too. The Ewings started Southforking one another in April of ’78, and they were so far from glam, it’s amazing anyone stuck around. Attached to the big-screen adaptation of Dallas for more than two years, John Travolta has been released from the role of J.R Ewing and "given a nice seven-figure 'gift' to go away quietly," a source tells Page Six. A pal of the former Vinnie Barbarino confirms the news, saying the film's producers "have gone in a different direction than was originally intended."What sort of different direction? Originally envisioned as a dramedy, the talk is that Dallas will now be a "comedic, behind-the-scenes" "show-within-a-show" a la Bewitched, and that Ben Stiller has been offered J.R.'s 10-gallon hat. OK, first off, how fun was last week’s interview with Joss Whedon? You guys went to town on that one. Honestly, I haven’t taken that many hits since high school, if y’all know what I mean.Which brings me to this week’s bidness. Being November, the month of Thanksgiving, I’ve decided to devote each of the next four columns to shows I am grateful to have on DVD. I lived in Houston for six years, having moved from the Midwest (where I've now returned), and was recently visited by some good friends from Texas. We were talking about TV, and, of course, I mentioned Friday Night Lights and how great it is. They informed me that they have been avoiding it like the plague. I couldn't believe it!
