CSI: MIami Episode Recap: "Collateral Damage" Season 7, Episode 23

A family is hit with a grenade, a waitress has her children taken away, Dr. Price still has a pill problem and the Russians return to the scene, all on this episode of CSI: Miami.

A hand grenade goes off in a crowded restaurant and the CSIs race to the scene. Horatio is first on the scene, rescuing one of the waitresses. The father celebrating his birthday with his family is dead, as is a female companion of the family. Jason Molina, the restaurant owner, says the victims are Warren Emerson, a lobbyist and Raquel Dominguez, who worked for Warren.

The CSIs question Tanya Rush (Sprague Grayden) — the waitress who says her children Maggie and Aiden were taken away from her by Child Services a week ago — but she is hesitant to answer their questions. She said she left the kids with a nanny, Maria Lopez, but the children were found abandoned and no one could find Maria. Horatio goes to speak to the children, and Maggie says Maria had hair just like hers with braids.

Ryan and Kyle are looking at Warren's body in the lab, and another grenade falls out of the body bag. Ryan dives with Kyle and they narrowly escape getting hurt. They find Dr. Price on the other side of the lab scrambling to pick up her Oxycodone pills. Ryan confronts her and tells her to kick the habit or he'll tell. She tells him she's fine.

Horatio questions Steve Emerson and his mom. She said her ears were ringing after the blast and she looked up and saw a flash of yellow outside after the blast that could have been a car.

Tanya and Horatio speak about how she met Maria. She tells him that she was at school trying to get a law degree and met her on campus one day when she had the kids. Maria offered to help her with the kids, and Tanya paid under the table.

Ryan and Eric find an impression of a car license plate on the valet stand at the restaurant. In a MacGyver-esque move, they use a fellow officer's Taser to get the plate impression when they lost their imprint device.

Tripp goes to the plate owner's home and shots are fired. He chases the boy down and cuffs him before backup arrives. Horatio and Calleigh find a roll of foil paper at the scene. Eric determines it was being used to make counterfeit credit cards. They question the kid — Ken Jarvitts — and he denies doing anything but the credit card counterfeiting. He apologizes for shooting at a cop and tells them where they can find the counterfeit warehouse. They go there and find Steve Emerson loading boxes. They find out the boys were lifting credit card numbers from Jason Molina's restaurant patrons. Steve was the target of the grenade, not his father.

They question Tanya as to whether she knew about what Jason was up to at the restaurant. She says she didn't know, but gives Horatio the canceled checks he asked for to track down the fraudulent babysitter. Horatio goes to the store where they were cashed and gets a name. He calls Yvette and asks her about her babysitting services.

Meanwhile, Calleigh traces the photo sent to Steve of himself, Jason and Ken at the restaurant to Cameron West, the paparazzi guy with the Russian ties. It turns out one of the Russians was a target of the credit card theft at the restaurant and wanted revenge. A piece of an old camera flashbulb was used to make the homemade grenade and they are able to pin it on Cameron. They tell him the Russians will be after him because his targets were still alive. We see shots of him getting dumped in the water later on.

Horatio confronts Yvette about her lies regarding the kids. She says she used to be a waitress at another of Jason Molina's restaurant where she didn't declare all of her tips, and after she left, Jason Molina called her and forced her to watch Tanya's kids, leave and then report her. It was payback because Tanya wouldn't help him in his credit card scheme. He thought taking her kids away would make her want to keep her job more. Horatio says the insurance money from the restaurant is going to go to her.
