In this episode of CSI: Miami, Diddy's back (oh joy), Eric's in trouble, and Calleigh and Eric's budding relationship is almost foiled (again).
Everyone's gathered on the boat of "Miami's most famous defense attorney" (guest star Sean "Diddy" Combs) when a man comes aboard and opens fire into the sky above the guests. It's a robbery, and Derek's fiancée Nadine is shot and killed in the moment of escape. The CSIs arrive on the scene and begin by fingerprinting everyone on the boat to see where the gunshot came from. They think the robbers, who escaped on another boat, may have had help. Natalia and Ryan track down the abandoned getaway boat and find someone else fixing it up. The jewelry from the robbery is still on board and all that's missing is Derek's laptop, which was also stolen.
Horatio informs Eric that the city has revoked his protection detail due to his real identity as the son of a Russian mob member and a non-American citizen. Meanwhile, Calleigh is helping Derek track down his laptop via a device embedded in it. When they manage to tap into his home computer from the lab, which leads them to the laptop. (Their fancy machinery lost me somewhere along the way.)
Yolena is back this week and offers to take a case from some unidentified man that works for Alexander Sharova, who assigns her to take out Eric. Sharova found out Eric was looking into him and orders the hit. Being a PI doesn't pay, she says. However, Yolena then takes this information back to Horatio and tells him Eric has a target on his back.
Horatio appears in the back seat of the car of Alexander Sharova. Horatio takes him to meet Eric, who informs him his birth certificate has his name on it, but he says he can't remove the hit on him. Alexander's "I owe you nothing" attitude angers Eric, who punches him, leaving behind a tooth. Horatio keeps it for evidence.
Back in the lab, Dr. Price pulls a dragged stabilized projectile from Nadine's body which Calleigh says had to have come from an underwater assault rifle. She informs Horatio he'll want to talk to Derek about this. He confronts him about a public argument over their pre-nup, but Powell denies having anything to do with the shooting.
Eric and Natalia find a tank tangled up under the water in a net from which they believe they can gather DNA from the shooter. Then, Immigration and Customs Enforcement bursts into the lab, issuing a non-citizen action against Eric and suspending him until further notice. They haul him away while Natalia keeps looking for evidence. She finds a match on the DNA with Ken Vogel, the man who was cleaning the getaway boat. Unfortunately, it may be inadmissible in court due to Eric's new status as an illegal immigrant.
Calleigh visits Eric in jail where he says the state is fast-tracking his hearing. She wants to know why he didn't tell her about the birth certificate, but tells him, "We'll get through it."
Back in the lab, on Powell's laptop they find his birth certificate, which he said he had because Eric was going hard on his man Kevin Sheridan. They think Derek turned Eric in to get back at him, but he swears he didn't do it. Derek says he'll fix it, though.
After showing signs of decompression sickness during questioning, Ken Vogel admits to shooting Nadine, but says it wasn't his idea and that he couldn't say who paid him. The guy said to him, "Derek Powell is paid to free murderers." Horatio talks to Derek who thinks it may have been Paul Garland, the father of Lindsay (who was murdered at the country club in the last episode). Natalia confronts Paul who says he's been diving lately to forget his daughter's murder. After further questioning, they discover he was the one who not only murdered Nadine, but turned Eric in for an immigration violation so the evidence would be inadmissible.
Yolena tells Horatio she can't trace Alexander's existence back before 1960. Eric is looking pretty dejected in jail while Horatio and Calleigh look at the tooth from Eric's punch-out of Alexander and trace Alexander's birthplace through the oxygen ratio in his tooth (what?!) to New Mexico. Alexander says the CIA sent him to Cuba in 1960 and then eventually denied any knowledge of him so he considered himself a Russian citizen for the next 20 years. Back in court, Derek Powell is trying to get the DNA evidence admitted that Eric collected and is waxing poetic about Eric's character. The judge votes to not suppress the DNA evidence after accepting the immigration ruling that Eric is an American citizen. (Alexander of all people gets the immigration people to expedite his release.)
What's sure to follow is a cheesy romantic reunion between Eric and Calleigh outside the jail.
"I was going to marry you but your dad stepped in."
"What makes you think I'd say yes? Maybe I met somebody special on the inside."
"I'll bet his cooking isn't as good as mine. Come on. I'll cook you a special American dinner since you're new to this country."
As Eric and Calleigh walk off into the sunset, we see the inevitable passing of the wronged and wrongdoer outside the station. Derek then swears to Horatio that he's going to stop representing criminals.
