CSI: Miami Episode Recap: "Presumed Innocent" Season 7, Episode 15

In this week's episode of CSI: Miami, blood bugs abound, a camera phone comes to the rescue and Diddy's on defense.

Calleigh, Natalia and Eric are called as witnesses at a trial for Alphonso Reyes and Diddy makes his appearance as the defense lawyer, Derek Powell. They all testify to finding the victim's body in the locker room of the country club where she was strangled, and they found Reyes' DNA on the victim's body. Horatio is outside the courtroom talking to the victim's father while the defendant is found guilty of the murder. Even six weeks after the killing, Lindsay Garland's body is still in the morgue and Dr. Price unzips her body bag to find tons of bugs in it. As Horatio says, "this changes everything." But why, we do not yet know.

It was determined they were blood flies and the eggs hatched inside the bag, which means she was killed outdoors and not in the locker room because these bugs only live in tropical places. Eric and Ryan go to the country club locker room where the victim was found to look for more evidence. Horatio informs the defense lawyer that Reyes may be innocent because the victim was not in fact killed in the locker room. Powell says he was just building his case before he appealed and that he has a witness named Tammy Witten. Tammy is in the hospital after having overdosed on antidepressants, but she tells Natalia she saw a car on the day of the killing sideswipe the wall near the country club and that Lindsey was a passenger in the car. She says she told the lawyer about it and that he didn't believe her story.

Natalia and Wolfe go to the car scrape scene to look for evidence and they find blood flies in the garbage bags of the alley, which proves that Lindsay was killed in that alleyway. Back in the garage, Eric and Calleigh are trying to find prints on Lindsay's car and Calleigh finds a weird blood print right before they were about to give up. Meanwhile, Horatio is questioning Alphonso about how he met Lindsay at the club and how they were friends until he realizes she was using him to get to the rich guys in the club. She had been dating a guy, and when he dumped her she begged to come back into the club to meet someone else. A fight ensued and that was the last time Alphonso saw her alive. He found her body in a locker a couple of hours later. Alphonso says that Andy Durbin was the name of the real estate guy that she had been dating.

By some stretch of the imagination, Calleigh traces the print on the car to a golf glove.  Horatio questions Andy and his friends about Lindsay and their golf gloves. Kevin Sheridan's glove appears to match.  And guess who shows up as his defense lawyer? Powell.

Horatio tries to get a warrant from the judge to search his place, but he says he doesn't have probable cause for it. Reyes, meanwhile, thinks Powell wouldn't let him testify so he'd go down quick in trial in order to protect the real guilty party. Ryan stops Kevin on the street and says that it's a routine traffic stop. He sees Anatole, the antidepressant that Tammy OD'd on and gets upset, kicks in the taillight and starts yelling. Powell comes out of nowhere and accuses him of assault. Horatio has to temporarily take Ryan's gun and badge until it's all sorted out. Poor Ryan — always getting himself into trouble. He was smart enough, though, to take pictures of the car with his phone, and Calleigh and Eric zoomed in on a photo to see that there was an eye peaking through the hole in the taillight. They determine that perhaps Tammy Witten was being held in the trunk of the car. It turns out she was the one that punched out the taillight, not Ryan.

Calleigh convinces the judge to give her a warrant now. Kevin and Powell are approached by Horatio at Powell's house and Eric hands them the warrant to go in the trunk. No one's in the trunk, however, and Powell advises Kevin to let them in his home where they find nothing. But luckily for Wolfe, he took another useful picture. How convenient. There were mylar heat blankets inside Kevin's car and they figured he might be using them to hide Tammy. Horatio gets Powell to give them a location and it turns out he's not that bad of a guy after all. They find Tammy and naturally it's in the nick of time. Kevin confesses, but there's a twist. It turns out Kevin had help — from the judge! The judge says he helped him because he felt his record was tarnished after putting away an innocent man. Same old story.
