CSI: Miami Episode Recap: "Smoke Gets in Your CSIs" Season 7, Episode 14

In this episode of CSI: Miami, Calleigh takes one for the team and almost loses her life, Eric professes his love and the CSIs track down a heroin addict's killer.

Wolfe and Calleigh are called to a house when a neighbor smells something rotting for days. There's a body in the attic and apparently someone's not done with it yet as they come back and start shooting at Calleigh and Wolfe through the ceiling. The shooter then sets the house on fire with them locked in the attic They hear what appears to be a bomb explode (it later turns out to be the microwave ignition of an aerosol can) and Calleigh breaks through the floor to get out. She makes Wolfe take the body with them as it's the only evidence they've got at this point.

Horatio and Eric find a business card at the scene with the name Jeff Peralta on it. Jeff says he was at the house because he was thinking about buying it, as it was a foreclosure he could get for a good price. He said he wasn't supposed to go inside but felt it was worth breaking the law to see if the house was worth the price. Both he and his wife give DNA samples just in case.

Dr. Price determines the time of death as the day prior and a gunshot wound as the cause of death. She also finds track marks hidden between the corpse's toes so they think perhaps it could have been a drug deal gone bad. A DNA test on some fingernail scrapings on the victim reveals the name Colin Astor. Colin says he met the dead guy at a pickup game last week. In the midst of questioning, Calleigh starts coughing and then stops breathing. Eric has them call for an ambulance and when she and Delko arrive at the hospital, former CSI Alexx Woods (Khandi Alexander) is the doctor on call who handles her severe case of smoke inhalation. Horatio waits in the hall and Alexx takes the dramatic long walk down the hall to tell him of Calleigh's fate. Eric, meanwhile, looks on in horror as they try and save her. Alexx tells Horatio to "get him now," as Calleigh is only breathing with the help of machines and nitric oxide, which can't last for long.

"I can't imagine going to work without you. I can't imagine living my life without you," Eric tells Calleigh.

So far this episode is more about the characters' personal lives than the case at hand.  The drama of Calleigh's smoke inhalation trauma has taken up a good portion of the first half.

An unknown CSI ran a trace on the bullets fired at the body when Caliegh and Wolfe were up in the attic. They are linked to a Ricky Gannon, who was in the system because he was tied to a past crime for which he was never charged because the witness died under mysterious circumstances. Horatio and Wolfe track him down and get him in a chase. They find heroin in his possession. Ricky says the dead guy's name was Doc and he was his best customer, so there's no way he would have killed him. He paid him in prescriptions — always with the new stuff — which gave him an edge on the street. They call Eric to check out his story at the hospital. Eric leaves his watch on Calleigh's arm so she'll know he was there when she wakes.

Alexx recognizes the photo of the dead doctor and says he used to work there part-time. She and Eric go to the pharmacy to interrogate the pharmacist, who admits to giving him the access to the drugs. Eric asks the pharmacist for the address of the dead and Wolfe goes to the house to see what's what. He uses the garage-door opener in the car to make his way inside. He and H smell bleach immediately and find a table full of surgical instruments. Natalia sprays them all looking for blood residue and pretty much the whole plastic walled room is covered in it. They surmise he's doing amputations or something similar, but then Natalia finds anesthesia so they can't determine if he was torturing victims or providing black market surgeries. They talk to a woman whose DNA they find on the underside of the metal table in the room and she reveals that the doctor also had an assistant for what were indeed black market surgeries.

Eric prints the kidney machine right in the hospital with some MacGyver-like moves — a breathing tube, iodine crystals and some gauze turned into a printing kit. He finds Colin Astor's prints on the machine and he says they traded organs for a little money. Then one day, someone died accidentally on the table and he didn't want to take the fall for it. But he still claims he didn't kill the doctor. The kidney being donated to this recent dead guy ends up being that of Mr. Peralta. He says he gave it because he's gotten into a lot of debt due to the housing market crash over the last year. He followed the doctor to his house, confronted him about the bad surgery and forced him into the attic and killed him.

Back at the hospital, Calleigh wakes up and sees Eric and says she knew he was there. He asks her if she heard what he said and she smiled and said "it was like a dream."

Meanwhile, Alexx invites H over for a family night dinner. And then they all live happily ever after? What happened to all the secret photos being taken by Sarnoff, and are they all still being watched? The answer will come in due time I am sure.
