CSI: Miami Episode Recap: "Don't Get Fueled Again" Season 7, Episode 2

In this episode of CSI: Miami we meet Miami Dade's new Medical Examiner, see Horatio fully back in action and learn ALL the lengths people apparently go to for a free gas. This episode opens at a party on the beach and a man comes running in on fire. He runs to the water ablaze but falls in the sand and burns up into a skeleton. The CSIs are on the scene and we get an introduction to the new Medical Examiner, Dr Tara Price. "She's a little spark plug" states Tripp. Dr. Price believes someone lit the deceased on fire. "A fight to the death" says Horatio. And the one liners are back! Someone will have new material for a YouTube compilation this year. The man holding the beach party was Paul Sanders. He seems offended that the guy interrupted his party more than he felt sorry for him. By tracing prints in sand back to the parking lot with residue from the melted shoe rubber, they find he had been running through the lot not in a straight line as to dodge the parked cars. Calleigh and Eric locate a piece of melted clothing in the lot and Eric calls Ryan for the victim's ID. The discovery is made in the meanwhile that the party had a valet service. They go to the beach party site looking for someone named Sam, the owner of the vest which was found on the victim. Sam says his vest was stolen.Sorry Eric and Calleigh fans - this next scene does not bode well for their immediate future at least. Eric and Tara meet in the morgue of all places and with a smirk on his face tells her about the ME turnover problem since the departure of Alex Woods. That's quite possibly the worst flirting I've ever seen. She informs him he swallowed gasoline and begins digging at the corpse, pulling out a tooth to send for DNA. Ask for the "Nicolas the Second" treatment she says. Natalia explains to Eric that this is called cryogenic grinding. "She's trying to impress you," Natalia says. "And she's cute too," adds Eric. "I'll bet Romeo" Did she just say "Romeo"?It turns out the fire victim is Dan Granger who has a theft record. They speak to his college roommate, Jonny Young who explains they've been siphoning gas together. When they were in the lot by the party, Jonny saw Dan catch on fire. He also saw a black tricked out Escalade take off at the same time Dan ran for the beach. We find out that that gas they siphoned from one of the cars in the lot was the gas that was on Dan. It's "half the murder weapon." The trace it to Arago Fuel in West Miami. The proprietor of the gas station discovers he's down 1500 gallons that have apparently been stolen via a door in the ground. The thief pulled fuel straight out into his own tank and into his Escalade. They explain that maybe if Dan Granger stumbled upon it, it could have got him killed. The proprietor explains he was distracted by a girl who would do "anything anything" for a free tank. But thankfully if not conveniently, they used protection which is the perfect vehicle for DNA! A reluctant Callie says, "I'll go get it...." They bring the gas station girl in for questioning and she claims she doesn't understand what they are talking about. They put out a bulletin for the Escalade and almost immediately we see Calleigh in a pursuit with the Escalade. She loses it at the light only to pull up after and see the car abandoned on a strangely empty highway up in flames. Oh wait, now there's conveniently a traffic jam but we find out the driver ditched it and torched it. There was no accelerant in the car, just a used flare. What the flames didn't destroy the driver did - the car was wiped down. Just kidding - Wolfe finds a fingernail in the glove compartment.Cut to Jonny sitting there in questioning with no fingernail - he lost it from the gas siphoning. There was a plastic bag in the car with passports that Jonny says he stole in order to sell them. They are student visas and they all live at the same address. The police and hummer race down the highway to the warehouse address on the passports. The one person left behind is none other than Miss Ronnell, the "gas station girl." She said that if they told anyone, he'd kill their families. It turns out it the girls like Miss Ronnell were an unfortunate part of a full fledged human trafficking organization where the owners sell the ladies to the highest bidder. Dan Granger must have stumbled upon it. The group was stealing gas to keep the operation running.Back in the lab Eric explains that the murder weapon is none other than a stun gun made out of a cell phone!? Eric fingerprints it. Why are the prints ALWAYS conveniently in the system? They belong to Sam Loughlin, the valet. He was stealing fuel from stations. "I caught the kid [Dan] stealing gas from me. I just wanted to teach him a lesson. I had no idea he'd ignite" Um, ok... "The Escalade and the Trailer weren't even mine." He won't rat out who does own them and he is taken away. Wolfe finds license plates in the airstream trailer and they are registered to - wait for it - Paul Sanders. Isn't it always the unassuming one from the beginning? I saw this one coming a mile away.I had to pause my TV at this point and shake my head in disbelief for this next scene. Paul Sanders is talking to all the girls in white and one of them acts out. "Who said that!?" A deep voice from the back reveals "I said it." Girls part ways to reveal Horatio, white light shining down on him. "They come here willingly, for their own piece of the American Dream," crys Paul. "And you provided them a nightmare," counters Horatio. It's Horatio the White Night to the rescue - yet again. On the other hand, I watch this show for the same reason many of you out there do, for pure escapism. So I shouldn't expect any differently. Don't we all wish we worked on the beach everyday, as the new ME pointed out at the beginning of the episode?!As many of you expressed your dislike of the season opener, do you think this episode was any better than the last? show less
