Las Vegas criminologists use scientific methods to solve grisly murders in this unusually graphic (and hugely popular) drama, which inspired a host of other cop-show 'procedurals.' Methodical Gil Grissom heads the team, assisted by Catherine Willows. An immediate ratings smash for CBS, the series adroitly mixes painstaking deduction, gritty subject matter and intriguing characters. The network quickly capitalized on its megahit with spin-offs 'CSI: Miami' and 'CSI: NY.'

Q: I read your recent Dispatch in which you mentioned screening the premiere episode of CSI's ninth season. I know you are not at liberty to speak of the details, but I would really like to hear more of your opinion on the episode. Was it as good as it should be, following the death (?) of Warrick's character? And I would really like to know how William Petersen was in this episode. Did Grissom finally show strong emotions after such a incident? Considering these will be his last 10 episodes, I... read more
  • Mega Buzz on Bones, Ghost Whisperer, CSI & More! | Today's News: Our Take | 7/23/2008 New
Senior editors Matt Webb Mitovich and Mickey O'Connor answer your questions! Can you confirm the Bones gossip that there will be a kiss between our favorite non-couple in the Season 4 episode "Crank in the Shaft"? — MagaliMickey: I can neither confirm nor deny the buzz — else risk penalty of death — but I will cryptically say this: It's best not to focus on this one episode in particular. There are lots of surprises planned for this season.Do you have any scoop on Ghost... read more

Q: I read the news that William Petersen will cut back his time at CSI and won't be on air as much through the end of the series. Yet as I read the online reactions, I was surprised the news was taken as Petersen is gone when he isn't. He is just cutting back, which, given how long he has been with the show, does not spell disaster. What is your take to the fan reaction to the Petersen news? A: I haven't been tracking the fan reaction, but I wouldn't be surprised that they're alarmed and ... read more
  • CBS at Press Tour: Life After Grissom | Roush Dispatch | 7/18/2008
If the season opener of CSI is any indication—CBS gave critics screeners of the episode this week—William Petersen is going to get quite the emotional workout in his final 10 episodes as a series regular. He gives one of his strongest performances to date as he grapples with the aftermath of the climactic shooting of Warrick (Gary Dourdan) in last season’s cliffhanger shocker. The episode also brings Jorja Fox’s Sara (looking softer and prettier) back into the picture, at... read more
  • CSI: Who Should Replace Grissom? | Today's News: Our Take | 7/18/2008
At Friday's executive session, Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, announced a new character on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.Tassler's description of the character, who will replace the departing William Petersen, was interesting, to say the least. He's a doctor and scientist who comes into the CSI as an outsider; he won't start off as the boss. Here's the catch: He's a bit of a DNA expert, and has identified a common profile among serial killers — in his own genes! Sounds a... read more
  • William Petersen Plans to Exit CSI | Today's News: Our Take | 7/15/2008
I think I hear CSI fans everywhere screaming. We teased casting changes for the CBS drama in a recent Mega Minute, and alas, those changes include William Petersen, whose recently signed contract only guarantees his appearance until the upcoming season's 10th episode, a rep for CBS confirms, following a report from EW's Ausiello. Petersen isn't gone for good, though. He will be staying on as an executive producer, and has agreed to make special appearances throughout the remaining run of the... read more

  • Ask Matt | 5/30/2008
Q: Looking back over the season, I can't help but notice the oddity that three hit procedural shows (Law & Order, CSI and SVU) over the last month chose to write out characters through use of the exact same premise: "Cop is under investigation for a suspicious shooting." I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, it's a rather glaring example of the overwhelming sameness among so many procedurals. On the other hand, Law & Order and CSI managed to craft very powerful episodes around the... read more

Q: I just had to write to you about the CSI season finale. I found the episode devastating and feel the need to commiserate with another TV fan about this very, very shocking end to Gary Dourdan's wonderful run as Warrick. I, and many other fans, are terribly upset about this horrific turn of events and can't believe how the producers have slammed shut the door on this character. I know Dourdan probably has some serious real-life problems but, wow, what a way to go. Just had to talk about it to... read more

Q: Watching last week's CSI finale, I couldn't help comparing it to the best show on TV today, The Shield. CSI wanted desperately to provide its audience with a "shocking" ending. They were able to succeed moderately on that level. (Though I don't think too many of us were surprised that they were going to kill Warrick after having spared the life of the incredibly annoying Sara from last season's "shocking" finale.) At any rate, I thought of the truly shocking finale from Season 5 of The ... read more
  • Exclusive: Jorja Fox Returning to CSI! | Ausiello Report | 5/22/2008
CSI boss Carol Mendelsohn wasn't pulling my leg when she told me last October that we haven't seen the last of Sara Sidle. Sources confirm that Jorja Fox has inked a deal to return for the show's ninth-season premiere next fall.Specifics of her comeback are being kept under lock and key, but my CSI mole assures me that she "won't be appearing in a flashback." The likely scenario has Sara returning to Vegas to shag Grissom mourn ex-colleague Warrick, who was shot (and presumably) killed in last... read more

Q: I live for Thursdays when I can get my Office and 30 Rock fixes, but last Thursday, I found myself much more interested in the CSI episode written by the Two and a Half Men scribes. My two favorites had to take a back seat because that was the most fun I've had watching TV in a long time. With the puns, in-jokes and fast pace, it out-rocked 30 Rock. I hadn't watched CSI in four or five years, but this is what I want TV to be every week. In my opinion, it's time for the glut of procedurals to... read more
  • Breaking: Jorja Fox's CSI Replacement Found! | Ausiello Report | 5/15/2008
The L Word's Lauren Lee Smith has been tapped to join CSI as Jorja Fox's pseudo-replacement, a CBS spokesperson confirms.Smith is expected to play the character of Bryce Adams, a "flirtatious, witty and strong-willed non-conformist" that is recruited to join the graveyard shift — also known as the role that Katee Sackhoff inexplicably got passed over for. In addition to L Word, Smith was a regular on the syndicated series Mutant X and had a role in the CBS comedy pilot, Can Openers, which... read more
  • Just How "Shocking" Will Warrick's CSI Exit Be? | TV Show Previews | 5/14/2008
Get ready for "the most shocking episode of CSI ever," according to exec producer Carol Mendelsohn. Given that past finales have featured Nick (George Eads) buried alive and a shocking revelation that Grissom (William Petersen) and Sara (Jorja Fox) had been sleeping together, they've got a lot to live up to. But Mendelsohn promises they'll deliver. "It's a very personal episode," she says. Warrick (Gary Dourdan) finds himself in more trouble following past episodes in which he was suspected of... read more

  • CSI Kills 'Em With Comedy | TV Show Previews | 5/7/2008
The May 8 CSI (9 pm/ET, CBS) is all about rubber chicken — and not the kind they serve at Vegas conventions. In an unusual crossover, Two and a Half Men creators Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn and their writing staff penned the script for the episode. "It's called 'Two and a Half Deaths,'" reveals CSI executive producer Naren Shankar (who returned the favor by cowriting the murder-themed May 5 episode of Men). "And a rubber chicken figures prominently."The story revolves around the death of... read more

Q: I'm glad Katee Sackhoff didn't get the role on CSI. She's too good for that show. Where will Starbuck go next? Joss Whedon's Dollhouse? A: All the major Dollhouse roles have been cast, so I doubt there's a place for her there. At the Sexiest Stars party, Katee would only let on that she's been reading pilot scripts in search of a post-BSG project, although she acknowledged that Starbuck will be a tough act to follow. She also relayed a very funny story about what she plans to do immediately... read more
