Las Vegas criminologists use scientific methods to solve grisly murders in this unusually graphic (and hugely popular) drama, which inspired a host of other cop-show 'procedurals.' Methodical Gil Grissom heads the team, assisted by Catherine Willows. An immediate ratings smash for CBS, the series adroitly mixes painstaking deduction, gritty subject matter and intriguing characters. The network quickly capitalized on its megahit with spin-offs 'CSI: Miami' and 'CSI: NY.'
  • Ask Matt | 7/25/2008 New
Q: I read your recent Dispatch in which you mentioned screening the premiere episode of CSI's ninth season. I know you are not at liberty to speak of the details, but I would really like to hear more of your opinion on the episode. Was it as good as it should be, following the death (?) of Warrick's character? And I would really like to know how William Petersen was in this episode. Did Grissom finally show strong emotions after such a incident? Considering these will be his last 10 episodes, I read more
  • Mega Buzz on Bones, Ghost Whisperer, CSI & More! | Today's News: Our Take | 7/23/2008 New
Senior editors Matt Webb Mitovich and Mickey O'Connor answer your questions! Can you confirm the Bones gossip that there will be a kiss between our favorite non-couple in the Season 4 episode "Crank in the Shaft"? — MagaliMickey: I can neither confirm nor deny the buzz — else risk penalty of death — but I will cryptically say this: It's best not to focus on this one episode in particular. There are lots of surprises planned for this season.Do you have any scoop on Ghost Whisperer? I heard that David Conrad (Jim) is leaving the show. Is it true? — ZachMatt: Everywhere I turned, your buzz on David/Melinda's hubby was met with people-in-the-know exclaiming, "Hogwash!" (I mean, didn't Close to Home already make that mistake?) As for other scoop.... Did you know that the gorgeous brunette from She's All That is buds with the gorgeous brunette from Can't Hardly Wait? 'Tis true — on Ghost Whisperer, at least. Rachael Leigh Cook will be guesting as a former(and... read more
  • Ask Matt | 7/21/2008
Q: I read the news that William Petersen will cut back his time at CSI and won't be on air as much through the end of the series. Yet as I read the online reactions, I was surprised the news was taken as Petersen is gone when he isn't. He is just cutting back, which, given how long he has been with the show, does not spell disaster. What is your take to the fan reaction to the Petersen news? A: I haven't been tracking the fan reaction, but I wouldn't be surprised that they're alarmed and ... read more
  • CBS at Press Tour: Life After Grissom | Roush Dispatch | 7/18/2008
If the season opener of CSI is any indication—CBS gave critics screeners of the episode this week—William Petersen is going to get quite the emotional workout in his final 10 episodes as a series regular. He gives one of his strongest performances to date as he grapples with the aftermath of the climactic shooting of Warrick (Gary Dourdan) in last season’s cliffhanger shocker. The episode also brings Jorja Fox’s Sara (looking softer and prettier) back into the picture, at least temporarily.CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler, kicking off CBS’s portion of the fall-season TCA press tour on Friday morning, spent much of her session explaining the new character who will be introduced to eventually take over the team. Described by Tassler as “an outsider coming into the CSI unit … not immediately as the boss,” he’s a doctor and scientist with “an interesting genetic profile that, in certain sort of medical contexts, they’ve... read more
  • CSI: Who Should Replace Grissom? | Today's News: Our Take | 7/18/2008
At Friday's executive session, Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, announced a new character on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.Tassler's description of the character, who will replace the departing William Petersen, was interesting, to say the least. He's a doctor and scientist who comes into the CSI as an outsider; he won't start off as the boss. Here's the catch: He's a bit of a DNA expert, and has identified a common profile among serial killers — in his own genes! Sounds a little Dexter-y, no?So, who do you think should play Dr. McSerialKiller? Tassler suggested they'd be looking for an actor of some stature to fill the role. My first thoughts: Oscar nominees Laurence Fishburne and David Strathairn (Good Night, and Good Luck), both of whom can convey steely resolve and menace with equal skill. — Mickey O'Connor read more
