You Want Claire Huxtable Cooking on Thanksgiving

A fun little survey released by Lifetime Products, Inc. — no, not the creator of weepy movies but the world's leading manufacturer of folding tables — says that 31 percent of adults want TV mom Claire Huxtable cooking their Thanksgiving dinner. Carol Brady came in second (with 27 percent), though you know Alice is the one really working the magic behind that island.Other findings from the survey:• Peg Bundy is the TV mom you most want far, far away from the stove.• Speaking of the Bradys, Marcia is the brood member you'd most like at your kiddie table. (Jan came in second; cry me a river.)• Adults and children alike voted Miley Cyrus the child star they most want seated at the kiddie table. (Perhaps only so they can sell the folding chairs next to her for $2,000 a pop.)• Today's kids prefer High School Musical's Gabriella (51 percent) to Sharpay (19 percent), while Drake beats Josh (45 to 37 percent). read more

Class of '87, This One's For You!

OK, first off, how fun was last week’s interview with Joss Whedon? You guys went to town on that one. Honestly, I haven’t taken that many hits since high school, if y’all know what I mean.Which brings me to this week’s bidness. Being November, the month of Thanksgiving, I’ve decided to devote each of the next four columns to shows I am grateful to have on DVD. And since high school is on my mind these days—just had my 20th class reunion last weekend (and let me tell ya, we still look good!)—the first batch are all shows from back when the Bonner boys were wearing our Capezio jazz shoes, thin leather ties and trying to understand why all the Prendie girls thought their massive Aquanetted walls of hair and liquid eyeliner looked good. So for Jerry Leyden, Chuck Wurzbach, Art Hoath and the rest of the crew, I offer you the best of the Class of 1987!The Cosby Show By its third season, Denise was just about to show off her Angel Heart (and more), Rudy ... read more

Back in the early '80s, Hill ...

Question: Back in the early '80s, Hill Street Blues was moved from one night to another and sometimes went missing before it found an audience. Someone had faith in Blues. After Blues found success, it ushered in a period of quality drama and, with Bill Cosby's help, took NBC to the No. 1 position in the ratings. With quality programs on NBC like Studio 60 and Friday Night Lights getting critical acclaim but not finding an audience or a working time slot, what will it take for quality programs to find a champion to keep them on the air for more than a few episodes? NBC's ratings haven't been this low since its inception, and they're still dropping. They have nothing to lose by keeping these quality programs on the air, yet they put on reality programs like The Real Wedding Crashers, which drop the rating points even further. Quality programs are like fine wines: It takes time for them to mature, while garbage will always remain garbage. What will it take for NBC to take a stand on ... read more

As an African-American TV ...

Question: As an African-American TV viewer, I am happy to watch a TV show that has a diverse cast. My current favorites are Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy and Scrubs. But sometimes I miss the days of watching family shows like The Cosby Show and A Different World, where the central cast are African-American. I know that UPN at one time had a number of shows geared toward an African-American audience, but since the merger with the WB, that is no longer the case. Don't get me wrong, I still like to watch Girlfriends, but the other "urban" comedies on the CW I can do without. Do you think that, with the success of Ugly Betty (diverse cast, but built around a Hispanic heroine and a Hispanic family), good shows centered around a minority family are coming soon? Along those same lines, I also remember hearing about a new sitcom created by Tyler "Madea" Perry called House of Payne. Has the show been picked up by any networks, and if so, when will it be on? If not, why do you think that it hasn't ... read more

Premise: Cosby played a doctor and dad in this all-time classic, which was TV's biggest hit in the 1980s and almost single-handedly revived the sitcom genre and NBC's ratings fortunes after ABC passed on the series. Mostly set in a Brooklyn brownstone, the series focused on obstetrician Cliff Huxtable and his wife, Claire, a lawyer, as they raised their kids with loving firmness. The series debuted in September 1984, ran for eight seasons and produced one spin-off, `A Different World.'
